Luck be a Lady

2010
09.05

Being a Lady is finally en Vogue again with the Fall/Winter 2010 Collections.  Fashion is revisiting  the demure classic sophistication of earlier decades. Nostalgia fills the air as skirts are longer, gloves are being worn, cardigans are back, and its all about the Hourglass Silhouette.

(Above: From Louis Vuitton 2010 FW Collection)

Is the same true in intimate apparel? Afterall, our undies are what helps to give us that Hourglass Silhouette!

With the influx of shape-wear on the market is it possible to have a bra and panties with a great fit and comfort while remaining ladylike and sexy?

I took these questions to my favorite intimate-wear designer Elle MacPherson Intimates and here is what they had to say:

Absolutely!  There’s no need to sacrifice femininity and fit when it comes to your undergarments.

Supermodel turned businesswoman Elle Macpherson created her signature lingerie line to encompass fit, fashion, function and affordability!

Elle Macpherson Intimates provides women with everything they want – impeccably designed lingerie made from sensual, luxurious fabrics in the most fashion forward colors that do not compromise fit and comfort.

Our Artistry set is a perfect example.  It features tiny threaded ribbon in the bra and briefs creating a look that is really a piece of art.  Five dainty bows adorn the set to complete the feminine ladylike look.  The stretch lace and careful design offer comfort and support while giving us the ability to take the Artistry up to an E cup in the contour bra!

So ladies IT IS possible to be pretty AND have the proper support!   Goodbye Bridget Jones style undies its time to wear something underneath that makes you feel as sexy as the clothing on top!

How Lucky are you ladies!  Elle MacPherson Intimates wants to help you with your Hourglass Silhoutte!

3 Lucky winners will receive a set of Artistry Bra and Panties in either Blue or Jet. (I will email winners  for their color choice and specific size).

Walk in my Shoes: heels, heels, heels

2010
08.22

I have always had a passion for shoes.  Unlike clothing, you can purchase shoes no matter what your mood or how you are feeling about your weight.  They are a little friend that is always happy to see you, sitting on a pretty display in the store calling out to you as you pass by.  Winking, promising, enticing you into taking them home.

Lets face it.  Women love shoes but few know the proper terminology to use when discussing them. They will refer to their shoes as “heels”, “sneakers” , “flats” or “flip-flips”.

“Heels” is just a general term for any shoe with height.  It’s like calling a woman “Mame” or “Miss” rather than “Christie” or “Beth”.  Come on ladies, lets be a little more intimate with our shoes.   Get to know them and their proper names.

You may be wondering with so many types of shoes where to start!

Let’s start with the basics.

One of the basic parts of a shoe is the heel.

What is a Heel?

Definition: “The heel is the outer part of the shoe that is placed under the heel of the foot. Shoe heels come in a wide variety of styles, shapes and heights. In fact, even shoes that are referred to as “flats,” will often have a heel, although it’s very low.  Some casual shoes, such as sneakers, do not have a separate “heel,” but instead have an out-sole that runs the length of the shoe.”

Although there are many types and several of them can be combined into one “Über Heel”, lets focus on the most common types of womens heels.

1. Stiletto: Named after the Stiletto Dagger, it is an ultra-thin, ultra-high heel which became popular in the 1950’s.   Usually 4″-6″ in height and tapered sharply, like the spring-loaded knife for which it is named. Generally considered the ’sexiest’ of heels.

(above: Stiletto Heel with platform front Christian Louboutin Relika Patent Mary Jane Pump Neiman Marcus)

2. Pencil Heel: similar to a stiletto,   but whereas a stiletto tapers smoothly from top to bottom a pencil heel is straight all the way down and even thinner that a stiletto. (these are very difficult to walk in)

(above: Pencil heel Christian Louboutin “Big Lips Pump” Neiman Marcus)

3. Wedge.  A wedge is based on the same shape as a triangular door-stop. The heel extends from the back of the shoe to right under the foot, running in a wedge shape from back to front. Wedges come in different heights.  Traditional wedges are flat at the ball of the foot, but there are also platform wedges.

(above: Wedge Heel Jimmy Choo Patent Leather wedge Nordstrom)

4. Kitten:  low heel from about 1.5 to 2 inches high, set in from the back of the shoe.  These are more of a cute heel than a sexy one and they are super comfy.

(above: Kitten Heel Romantic Soles“Keira” kitten heel Zappos.com)

5. Platform.  These heels are preferred not only for the stylish look but also for the fact that they are immensely comfortable. A platform heel helps you keep a proper balance on the shoe, so there is absolutely no stress on either front or back body part.  Platform shoes are thick soles that sit under the front part of the foot and are combined with wedges, chunky heels or stilettos. They are known as platform wedges, when they are combined with a wedge heel.  The most current designer trend pairs a stiletto and a platform with the platform hidden on the front of the shoe between the out-sole and the fabric of the shoe.

(above: Hidden Platform Stiletto Dolce & GabbanaLeopard print peep toe 4 1/2″ stiletto with 1″ hidden platform Neiman Marcus)

6. Cuban Heel.  Also known as Latin Heel.  A broad heel of moderate height with a slightly tapered back and straight front.  Often used in dance shoes and mens boots)

(above: Stacked Cuban Heel Delman Jocelyn heel Zappos.com)

7. Stacked heel.  A substantial heel, made from thin slices of wood sandwiched together. Can be squared off or tapered, as on cowboy boots.  Usually brown or beige, stacked heels are designed to give the illusion of thin layers of wood that have been stacked up to create a flat, wedge or high heel.

(above: Stacked Heel Marc by Marc Jacobs Zappos.com)

8. Louis heel. Also known as a French Heel.  A heel with graceful curves on the sides and back. (can be of any height) Originally designed for King Louis XIV, of France.

Not all shoes are created comfortable!  Loving the look of your shoes is one thing, being comfortable in them is another!  There are several products out there that can help your feet feel as great as they look in those hot heels!

Here are few of my favorites I use as a Stylist to help Models with comfort in the sometimes crazy shoes they have to wear!

No more slipping!

“Get a grip! HeartStoppers red, heart-shaped no-slip shoe pads stick to the outer sole of shoes for a sturdy step- every time. Avoid the nightmare plunge on slick floors in front of crowds of gasping onlookers. HeartStoppers shoe pads are made of PVC to provide traction on slippery surfaces. They work brilliantly on all slick floors – even wet surfaces and black ice!”  I LOVE LOVE LOVE These!  A Definite Must-have!   http://www.summersoles.com/

White Collar: Steal the Style

2010
08.15

This season Fashion has taken a trip in the DeLorean to visit the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s.  Collections abound with Classic Ladylike Silhouettes and Modern Versions of the Classic Gentleman.  One of the best examples of this “Modern Gentleman” is Matt Bomers character Neal Caffery on USAs hit show White Collar.

For those not familiar with the show you need to catch up!  (The complete season 1 is available on DVD).

Here’s a crash course:

“White Collar is about the unlikely partnership of a con artist and an FBI agent who have been playing cat and mouse for years. Neal Caffrey (Matt Bomer) a charming criminal mastermind, is finally caught by his nemesis, FBI Agent Peter Burke (Tim DeKay).

When Neal escapes from a maximum-security prison to find his long-lost love, Peter nabs him once again. Rather than returning to jail, Neal suggests an alternate plan: He’ll provide his criminal expertise to assist the Feds in catching other elusive criminals in exchange for his eventual freedom. Initially wary, Peter quickly finds that Neal provides insight and intuition that can’t be found on the right side of the law.”

Neal is smart, sexy, charming and a little dangerous!  All the things women love!

The Perfect Modern Gentleman.

I spoke with Stephanie Maslansky the Costume Designer for White Collar about Neal’s style:

Q: How would you describe Neal Caffrey’s Style?

SM: Neal’s look is rooted in the Rat Pack Era of the mid 1950’s to ’60’s.  Icons of charismatic cool–Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra , and Sammy Davis Jr, adopted the look.  Their appeal was a particular brand of charm and wit–an overall attitude reflected by a new approach to style presenting a fresh, slimmer silhouette.  Today the attitude and silhouette have been refined for modern times.  Neal Caffrey exudes confidence and sophistication and has embraced the style as his creative influence, favoring fedoras, slim ties, suits and shirts tailored to appear custom- made.

Q: Neal’s wardrobe is always smart but manly.  It has a great balance.  How do you keep the fashion forward edge but not make him look like too much of a dandy?

SM: It’s important that Neal is sharp and sexy, not metro.  Neal is comfortable knowing that his look sends the right message.  Details, graphics and colors complement one other; no element overwhelms the costume.  T-shirt and sweater necklines are not too scooped and shirt collars are neither too small or too large.  It has a lot with proportion.  Ties, lapels and pant legs are the correct width.  Too wide or too slim can be foppish and distracting.  Pocket squares are controlled.  The fit of everything is the key.

Q: How can viewers incorporate Neal’s style into their wardrobe repertoire?

SM: The Rat Pack look embraced by Neal Caffreyhas been popularized- first at the couture level and then by ready-to-wear.  Neal currently wears Paul Smith, Gucci, Dolce & Gabanna, John Varvatos, Thomas Pink, and Calvin Klein.  He wears flat-front trousers and 2-button jackets.  He favors vintage cuff-links and tie bars.  He has a great collection of felt and straw fedoras.  Viewers can also find these looks for less money, if they shop wisely.  Discount stores, consignment and thrift shops, sample sales and flea markets are good places to start.  department stores have great sales at the end of a season.  Its worth the money and effort to have a jacket sleeve and trouser correctly tailored.

Q: If a viewer was to purchase 1 key piece to get Neal’s style what would it be?

SM: Neal’s Fedora  is his signature accessory.

Burn Notice: Steal the Style

2010
08.01

Sadly, my Summer Blog Posts will soon be at an end..it will shortly be time to move onto Fall/Winter topics but I cannot leave summer without a Post on Style inspired by one of my favorite television shows USA’s “Burn Notice”.

To me Burn Notice is Summer!  So grab a Mojito and lets get dressed!

For those of you not familiar with this sizzling hot Miami based series here is a short run-down: Jeffrey Donovan stars as agent Michael Westen a “burned” spy who returns to Miami where he uses his special ops training to help those in need, and track down the men who wrongly burned him with the help of his trigger happy ex-girlfriend Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar) and hilarious sidekick  Sam (Bruce Campbell).

With an affinity for yogurt, Michael Westen’s style is classic easy Miami sophistication.  Who wouldn’t want to dress like this guy! He’s as cool as it gets! Linen and light weight suits, great shades and crisp dress shirts.

Here’s what you need to Steal the Style:

Fiona “may look like she just stepped out of a fashion magazine but she’s a force to be reckoned with”. She is Michael’s on again, off again, and then on again girlfriend.  “Fiona is definitely a shoot first and asks questions later kind of gal. Her fearless nature is both enticing and dangerous, as she is capable of making things go “boom” very quickly.”

Her style includes  slinky one shoulder dresses, fitted jeans, easy tanks and of course the famous hip bag!

I have been searching for this bag FOREVER and finally found the PERFECT one at Happy Cow! Happy Cow’s line is  AMAZING!  “Completely Environment-Friendly: The entire range of bags & accessories are handcrafted from recycled leather. We purchase off-cuts of leather from high-end furniture manufacturers, anything that is too small to make furniture out of is sold to us. Effectively meaning we are using brand new, high-quality leather that would otherwise be thrown away. This means less pressure on the environment and no unnecessary suffering. “ Happy Cow is my new obsession!  The waist and hip bags look super-cool and are one of my favorite things to wear on set!  Hands free!  I LOVE HAPPY COW!  http://www.happycow.com.au/

Here’s what you need to Steal the Style:

Sam is Michael’s hilarious and dependable sidekick.  An ex Navy Seal who loves Mojitos and rich divorcees.  His style is Classic Tropical Resort.  One stop at Tommy Bahama and you’ve got it!

Here’s what you need to Steal the Style:

The Modern Southern Belle: Ah Sookie Sookie

2010
07.06

Ah Sookie, Sookie!

The supernatural birth of  HBO’s “True Blood” has remade our idea of Southern Style. Sookie Stackhouse is the Modern Southern Bell (MSB).

(above: HBO’s “True Blood” Sookie and Bill)

MSB’s are sweet (bless their hearts) but also tough cookies! Often described as “Bulldozers disguised as powder- puffs”, they are women that are kicking-ass and taking names — while looking perfect-as-punch doing it!

MSB’s make us all long to aquire that sweet southern drawl, grace, ease and quick wit.

While I can’t help you with the accent, I can help you with some key components to achieveing  the MSB style.

Here is my Recipe for the Modern Southern Bell

  • Always offer Firefly “Sweet Tea Vodka”, to everyone who visits your home and smile!  Didn’t your momma teach you that smiling uses less muscles than frowning?  Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka was created on a small still in South Carolina and is distilled 4 times, infused with tea grown on a plantation 5 miles from the distillery and then blended with real Louisiana sugar cane.  Visit their website for some down-home drink recipes  http://www.fireflyvodka.com/

  • MSB’s peddle their way from Farmers Markets to Roadside Stands picking up fresh fruits, carrying them home in the baskets of their classic bikes to make pies and jams for their friends and neighbors.  You’ll turn heads on Electra Gypsy 3i cruiser bike.

(above: Electra Gypsy 3i cruiser bike in  forest green  http://www.electrabike.com/   )

  • Southern girls appreciate their natural assets! For Dewy fresh southern skin try Benefit’s“Bathina:Take a Picture it Lasts Longer” Glistening Body Balm

  • MSBs have a distinct way with fond expressions:

1. Y’all come back!  Keep some “Pink Lemonade” cupcakes from Retro Bakery on hand to keep your guests coming back! (Lemon cake topped with pink lemonade buttercream and hot pink glitter sugar) mmm mmm good!

2. Well Bless your heart this expression can have two connotations- be careful–So if you choose to excuse yourself from speaking ill of someone else or address any particular male, who showers upon you flattering but unwanted compliments simply place your hand over this sweet Heart Charm Necklace from Topshop.com and say those 3 enchanting words.

3. How’s your momma? That’s right ladies, all Momma’s are right! My momma always said  “Never leave the house without clean undies!”  Try the Bluebell Frill set from Topshop.com

4. Love your hair! Except in the summer heat, lawd that humidity is sho’ nuf’ a pain in the patoot — try the Frizz line by Living Proof to help tame the southern mane!  Available at Sephora.

  •  MSBs know that having some sweet southern tunes on a “Roberts Revival Radio” from Anthropologie will help bring on the best mood from her elegant gentleman suitor.

  •  Honey, MSBs know how important summer dresses are!  Pair them with some darlin’ wedges and Ah do declahr, you’ll sure to have some mouths waterin’.
(above: Anthropologie “Sweet Shop” dress)

  • Darlin’ don’t forget your gloves, I mean some protective hand cream!  Try Sea Island Cotton anti-bacterial hand lotion from Bath and Body Works. Sea Island Cotton fragrance is a clean scent, inspired by pure white cotton flowing in fresh ocean air of Sea Island Georgia!
Key fragrance notes: Cotton Blossom, Drenched Air, Fresh Linen, Soft Powder

  •   Grab your wide brimmed hat sugah, the larger the better! And even in the shade keep your sunglasses handy ‘cause you know that sun is gonna shift any minute.

Garnish your look: Sparkle and Shine all Summer

2010
06.27

Polishing your look is like mixing the perfect cocktail!  Of course we would all like to start with something top shelf , add a little mixer, then top with a pretty garnish. The problem is that summer looks tend to be casual, comfortable and well, slightly boring.

Garnishing your look by adding  a little sparkle and shine is a great way to take it from forgettable to fabulous!

I spoke with the folks at Tarina Tarantino, The QUEEN of Sparkle, and here’s Tarina’s  advice on shining this summer,

“Summertime means longer days so I always keep a few extra accessories in my purse to change an outfit from day to night.   Especially important are hair accessories! When the temperature goes up an updo is in order.  Having some pretty jeweled hair clips will make your chignon perfectly chic.  I also love to layer a long statement necklace over a maxi dress which is a great look to take you from the beach to a dinner party.”

Remember not to over-do it!  You want it to catch the eye, not blind someone!  Try adding just a few key pieces to really shine!

I Wear My Sunglasses at Night: Summer Sunglass Trends

2010
06.17

(at the end of this article don’t forget to enter to win! Last week’s winner is: Kat Munoz!  Congrats!)

Sunglasses are THE must-have accessory for summer, no matter what trend you follow.   Not only do they look cool, they hide wrinkles, protect you from the sun and shield you on non-makeup days!

It’s not about having the most expensive pair this season.  The goal is to add some fun, whimsy, color and personality to your eye-wear!   This summer you can’t go wrong with anything that feels retro or vintage.  Carrera, the sunglasses made famous on Miami Vice,  were all over the Fashion Week runways. Funky Ray-bans are being coveted by Celebrities and everywhere you look its ALL ABOUT COLOR!

(above: Lady Gaga in Carrera Navigators)

Selecting the right style/shape sunglasses can be a little overwhelming.  There are so many types out there!  To give you a little knowledge BEFORE you hit the stores I’ve narrowed the Summer Sunglass trends down to six styles/shapes: Wayfarer, Aviator, Navigator, Square, Over-sized Round and Modified Cat’s Eye.

Wayfarer.   Wayfarer’s were first designed by Ray-Ban in 1952. They were among the first plastic sunglasses ever made. Wayfarer’s were extremely popular up until the 1970’s, They didn’t regain popularity until the early 80’s when movie stars, like Tom Cruise in Risky Business, began wearing them.  Fashionable for both men and women Wayfarers are hot again but this time in bright colors like neon, red, white, bubble-gum pink, etc. Check out Ray-Bans “Rare Prints” collection for something really unique and Zooey Deschanel’s line “Zooey” with Oliver Peoples.

(above: Ray-Ban “Original Wayfarer” with Orange on white Subway Text from Rare Prints Collection)

(above: Zooey  line by Zooey Deschanel for Oliver Peoples)

Aviator.  Aviators, also know as “Cop Shades”,  have an over sized teardrop-shaped lens (which looks similar to a pilots goggles) and a thin metal frame. The design was introduced in 1936 by  Ray-Ban  for issue to U.S. military pilots. Popular on both men and women.  This season make sure you have a pair with white frames!

(above: Ray-Ban  “Aviator” with white metal frame)

(above: David Beckham in Ray-Ban Aviators)

Navigator.  Another Unisex style, navigator shades are similar to aviators but sporty with a more squared off lens shape (not as droopy of a teardrop as the Aviator). You’ll see them in both metal and plastic frames in a variety of colors. This is the style sported on Miami Vice that made Carrera so popular in the 80’s.

(above: Carrera “Speedway” sunglasses)

Square.  Definitely THE HOTTEST TREND this season.  They look AMAZING on everyone!  Fashionable and they give you tons of coverage!  Every Celebrity and Socialite has a pair of these.  Great for staying Incognito.

(above: Derek Lam “Gemma” sunglasses)

(above: Eva Mendes in Square shades)

Over-sized Round.  Think Jackie O.  Choosing over sized  eye-wear can be tricky. Make sure to select a frame that doesn’t swallow your whole face. These styles are great for adding glamour to an ordinary outfit. I prefer the round wrap styles.

(above: D&G “MGD” sunglasses designed by Madonna)

Modified Cat’s Eye.  These aren’t your typical “Pink Ladies” cat’s eye glasses.  They are Bigger and Funkier!  Spotted on everyone from Lady Gaga to Scarlett Johansson lately these shades are HOT!

(above: Model Dree Hemingway in modified cat’s eye glasses)

(Budget tip:  Are the brand names and thoughts of prices scaring you?  Most of these shapes and styles can be found at Fred Flare www.fredflare.com  and H&M for under $20)

No matter what shape you choose remember to have fun with it! Sunglasses shouldn’t be just an accessory!  They should complete and compliment your look and personality.

I have an  exciting Giveaway for you this week from one of my favorite lines Deborah Lippman.  To ENTER leave a comment (scroll back up to top of page and click on the comment icon at top right) (between Friday June 18 and Monday June 21) telling me what sunglass style you’ll be rockin’ this summer.  1 Lucky reader will win a Bottle of “Supermodel”the shade created with model Dree Hemingway!

The biggest statement accessory this season is right at your fingertips!

Bold nail looks add a punch to any ensemble and can spice up even the most boring casual look.

Here are the Top 6 nail trends for Summer/Fall.

1. Toss the Gloss ladies!  Matte is Back!  Get rid of those glossy polishes.  Fashion is moving forward with an ultra modern Matte look.  My favorite Matte line is Manglaze  http://www.manglaze.com/   , the “Originators” of  matte polish.   I spoke with Marc from Manglaze and here is what he had to say about the Matte Trend, ” I think its great that the industry has discovered that besides just color, there is a whole world of textures people would like to consider on their nails.  You still get the mall masses who can only appreciate glossy but some really cool chicks and a bunch of guys really appreciate some more hard core finishes”.  Manglaze is worn by about 50/50 men/women. Packaged in super cool bottles with punk rock/indie label style graphics, the colors have great names like ”Fuggen Ugly Matte Grey” and “Matte is Murder Matte Black”, that make you proud to tell someone the name of the shade you have on!

2. Say  au revoir to boring French manicures and welcome in the “New Moon”.  Moon manicures (also known as the “Gatsby”) were originally popular on silver screen stars in the 1920s and 1930s.  This classic sophisticated look is BACK!  Polish is applied to the nail but not to the moon, creating a chic retro inspired look.  Can also be done in a two tone style with the moon one color and the rest of the nail another. (to get a “perfect” moon manicure make an appointment with Tricia Mesa at 702.395.6665 ext. 119)

3. Step back Black!  Grey is the new “it” color for nails.  Softer than black but just as edgy. Grey nails made a huge showing at New Yorks Fashion Week and all the Celebs are rocking this trend.  From graphite to dove and the new color “griege”, grey nails definitely make a statement.

4. Sparkle.  Sparkle.  Sparkle.  Glitter  polishes will shine you through summer and into fall! Who doesn’t feel great in something sparkly and bonus, they last a VERY long time!  My favorite is Deborah Lippman “Happy Birthday”, its a party in a bottle.  http://lippmanncollection.com/07/LC007_index.html

5. Feeling Blue?  In general all blue hues are hip.  Celebrities are going crazy for it!  For summer I am loving the turquoise and teals.   They create a fresh, sophisticated and trendy look!  According to Neiman Marcus NARS “Blue Lagoon” from the Vintage Polish Collection is the NOW color that they can barely keep stocked!

6. Vibrant Red. Red nails are another must-have this season. Red is the classic color that will never lose its charm.   Whether you choose a powerful and elegant classic red or a more youthful one like coral red, red nail polish  is one of the hottest trends when it comes to nail polish.   Selecting the perfect shade of red can be difficult so I spoke with the folks at Deborah Lippman and here is what Deborah has to say about red nails, “ Here is my rule of thumb: Think about if you’re going to wear a lip shade, try to use what would look good on your face when looking for your nail color.  In the summer a lot of us like to tan, which you shouldn’t do. But if you have an olive tone to your skin during the summer months than an orange red will look better on that skin tone.  A blue or more blood red is better if you have a pale/pink skin tone. A person with darker skin can wear almost any shade, colors on dark skin don’t make as much of a statement as they do on light skin tones.  Remember when wearing red polish in these modern times it is never necessary to wear your nails long. It is however necessary for the length to be the same.  A rounder tip is more modern on a short nail. A slightly almond shape on a slightly longer nail is very chic.”  I am in love Deborah Lippmans “Supermodel”.  A shade that was created with model Dree Hemingway.  http://lippmanncollection.com/07/LC007_index.html

Underneath it All: the art of wearing a bra

2010
06.08

I have sat quietly for years watching models, friends, even family members commit a serious crime against themselves!  I see it everywhere: at home, in a dressing room, at a restaurant and on photoshoots.  Bad bra application and technique followed by  ill fitting bras worn past their expiration date resulting in  bumpy boobs, uniboob, false back fat, underboobs, falling straps, red marks and cups runnething over!

It begins with the simple act of getting dressed.  First with the closure in front they take the bra and hook it underneath their breasts, then they spin it around and stick their arms into the straps and off they go.

Alright, enough already ladies!  I can stay silent no longer!  THAT IS NOT THE CORRECT WAY TO PUT A BRA ON! No More Clip and Spin!!!

Putting your bra on in this way does nothing to help “the ladies”.  Its the difference between having your “head down at your desk” and “standing at attention”.  You are in there all smooshed and willy-nilly.  You don’t look your best and its uncomfortable!

My friends at Freya http://www.freyalingerie.com/  perfectly explain how to properly put on a bra.  (good news for larger breasted women, Freya goes up to a J-cup and offers “active wear” bras)

Swoop and Scoop.

“First, lean forward and allow your breasts to fall into your bra so they sit in place naturally and comfortably(what we call the swoop). Then fasten the bra on the loosest hook and stand up. Next, scoop each breast gently into place in the bra (remember that breast tissue goes all the way to the underarm) to ensure they are comfortably positioned and not caught in the underwire or spilling out of the sides and use your index finger to smooth across the top cup edge to ensure there is no overspill.  And there you have it; it really is as simple as that.”

Knowing how to put the bra on properly is just the first step.  Now you need to make sure you buy the right kind of bra!

I spoke with my friends at Elle Macpherson lingerie (one of my personal favorite lines) http://www.ellemacphersonintimates.com/

and here are some tips from Elle herself on purchasing a bra:

Q: What are the keys to getting a bra that fits comfortably?

E:  “A professional bra-fitting is the first and most important step in finding a bra that fits comfortably”

Q: What should women look for when shopping for a bra?

E: “Fit, function. fashion and affordability”.

Q: What is the expiration date on a bra?

E: “bras should be replaced every six months.  When a bra starts to ride up in the back, wrinkle in the cup or slips off your shoulders it’s a sign of fabric weakening and your need for a new bra.  Hand washing your lingerie makes it last a bit longer”.

(above: Elle Macpherson “Artistry” bra)

The fit.

The experts at Neiman Marcus  (who carry amazing lines like La Perla, Marlies Dekkers, and Costabella)  provided me with  some great advice on  “getting the perfect fit”:

  • Lean forward to make sure your breasts fit comfortably in the cups: they should not bulge out.
  • You should be able to slip two fingers underneath the center of the band easily with some resistance.
  • Support is achieved through the cups and band, not through the straps.
  • Center front of bra should lay flat against the body.

According to Neimans “80% of women are wearing the wrong bra. Not only can a poor-fitting bra be extremely unflattering, it can also be harmful to your breasts.”

HEALTH risks caused by ill-fitting bras that don’t offer the correct support can range from constricted breathing, back pain and restricted circulation to muscle strain, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and tissue damage to the breasts!

Neimans specialists will measure you for free and help you select the proper fit!

Another thing to consider when buying a bra is what type of clothing and activities you will be doing.  Bras come in a variety of shapes and types for different uses!  Neiman Marcus gave me this great chart to show the styles and uses for a variety of bra types:

Remember when selecting a bra keep in mind: technique, fit, expiration, and activity.  Your new mantra: If  your “white” bra has turned gray throw it away!  The proper fit and type of bra will ensure both comfort and a smooth look throughout the day.  Your bra lays the foundation for how the rest of your clothing looks!
