Tightening the belt

2010
03.18

This BLOG Post will be more of a discussion.  I really want to hear from you on this.

Verb 1. tighten one’s belt – live frugally and use less resources; “In the new economy, we all have to learn to tighten our belts”

economise, economize, save – spend sparingly, avoid the waste of; “This move will save money”; “The less fortunate will have to economize now”

Lets face it right now the economy sucks!

People who never used coupons before are suddenly coupon cutters.  Generic brands are flying off the shelfs.  Women are waiting a few extra weeks to get their roots touched up and attempting home manicures and pedicures.

They are trading in thier SUV’s for economy cars.

Discount stores like H & M, Marshalls, and Nordstrom Rack have huge lines while the mall seems virtually empty. Households have cut back on almost everything.

With the struggling economy many of us have had to tighten our belts,  cut back on  luxuries and get back to basics BUT…..there are some things that each  of us refuse to skimp on!  We each hold on to one dirty little luxury to keep us sane, to help make us forget how bad it is.

One man’s obscenely extravagant frivolity is another man’s hardcore life staple.

Whether the belt you tighten is Louis Vuitton or Old Navy..its still being tightened!

What  luxury do you rationalize out as being necessary?  Is it having a housekeeper?  A Massage? A highend handbag?   Dining out?  What is your MUST-HAVE?

Fashion Safari

2010
03.14

Yesterday, I did a shoot with photographer Robert Kley http://www.rjkphoto.com/ , hair/makeup artist Mary Rockwood Crabtree http://www.makeuplasvegas.com/, and an AMAZING model from Los Angeles Kahshanna http://www.kahshannaevans.com/

We wanted to flex our creative muscles!

Clean lines, neutrals, beige and cream, exposed brassieres, and  military influences are all big Spring /Summer Trends so we decided to go on :

Fashion Safari!  The Hunt for a Good Deal.

I’m going to tell you all a big secret!

Come closer..shhhh…I styled this entire shoot from TJ Maxx.

I know!  Fastionistas all over the country are shreaking  and telling me to shut my mouth!

But you CAN dress current, trendy, and fashionable shopping at outlets and discount stores.  You just need to be armed with knowledge of the current trends and an eye for quality pieces.

The biggest factor when shopping outlets is to TAKE YOUR TIME!  DO NOT GET FRUSTRATED!  Peruse the store calmly and examine each piece carefully!  Ask yourself  “Is this piece either current or classic?” , “Is this piece constructed well?” ,”What can I pair this with?”.  One big mistake many shoppers make is grabbing pieces that they have a passing desire for without knowing what they are going to do with that piece, how they are going to wear it.  Then you just end up with a closet full of clothing with the tags still on that you never wear.  Visualize the look head to toe!

No single piece in this series of photos cost over $24.00.

Hard Rock San Diego- “hot girls..and Jamie”

2010
03.13

Recently I traveled with one of my favorite clients Ideawork Studios http://www.ideawork.com/ to San Diego to shoot the new ad campaign for the Hard Rock -Intervention.

Intervention is the Hard Rock’s pool/nightclub. The Concept was sexy nurses (to tie in with the intervention theme) bikinis and summer fun…..and….duh duh duh!  It rained.

We got most of our shots in-between downpours.  It was a great group of models (from Vegas and San Diego) and crew who toughed it out, worked really well together, and made it happen!

So if you’re driving around San Diego and are distracted by a bus wrapped in hot nurses and girls in bikinis you know where it came from!

We had about 15 female models and 1 guy model so in the behind the scenes video I said “we are shooting hot girls …and Jamie” (Jamie being the 1 guy) so that has become the standing joke from the job! LOL

Sun Cautious!

2010
03.12

Let the Sun Shine in!

The weather is beautiful and every one’s thoughts are drifting to beaches, tanning , outdoor photo shoots and fun in the sun.

Models will be rushing to tanning beds and outdoor pools to get swimsuit ready( and I know your tricks of going to multiple tanning salons on the same day to try to get more time in the beds!  You naughty girls!!)

Crews will be spending long hot days in the sun (and no matter how much the Vanity Squad offers sunscreen you will put it on once and forget or become to busy to reapply and end up with a terrible burn!)

Here is a reminder on why being Sun Cautious is so important!

Below are statistics from The Skin Cancer Foundation

http://www.skincancer.org/Skin-Cancer-Facts/

  • Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than one million skin cancers are diagnosed annually.
  • Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon.
  • One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime.
  • Between 40 and 50 percent of Americans who live to age 65 will have either skin cancer at least once.
  • About 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.
  • Up to 90 percent of the visible changes commonly attributed to aging are caused by the sun.
  • Contrary to popular belief, 80 percent of a person’s lifetime sun exposure is not acquired before age 18; only about 23 percent of lifetime exposure occurs by age 18.
  • People who use tanning beds are 2.5 times more likely to develop squamous cell carcinoma and 1.5 times more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma.
  • I know!  You’re saying ” I like the sun! I don’t want to avoid it!” and “I don’t want to look like Dracula all summer”

You can still enjoy the sun and have a nice tan.  You just need to be a little more creative with it!

     Here are several ways:

    Sunscreen

With so many brands of sunscreen available, selecting the right sunscreen can be difficult. These tips from the American Melanoma Foundation may help you in making your selection:

    • Dermatologists strongly recommend using a sunscreen with an SPF 15 or greater year-round for all skin types. If you are fair-skinned and sunburn easily, you may want to select a sunscreen with a higher SPF to provide additional protection. Using a cream, oil or lotion is a matter of personal choice, but keep in mind that most oils do not contain sufficient amounts of sunscreen and usually have an SPF of less than 2. All sunscreens need to be reapplied, so follow the guidelines written on the sunscreen bottle. Gel sunscreens tend to sweat off and, therefore, need to be reapplied more frequently. Remember, expensive sunscreens are not necessarily of better quality.
    • Choose a “broad-spectrum” sunscreen that protects against UVB and UVA radiation. PABA, or para-aminobenzoic acid, was one of the original ultraviolet B (UVB) protecting ingredients in sunscreens. However, some people’s skin is sensitive to PABA, and it also can cause staining of clothing. Today, PABA has been refined and newer ingredients called PABA esters (such as glycerol PABA, padimate A and padimate O) can be found in sunscreens. PABA and PABA esters only protect against UVB radiation, the sun’s burning rays that are the primary cause of sunburn and skin cancer. Also look for other UVB absorbers listed in the ingredients such as salicylates and cinnamates.

    CLOTHING

There are several places you can purchase UV-protective clothing ands hats.  REI carries a wide range but my favorite is Sun Precautions http://www.sunprecautions.com/

SUNLESS TANNING AND SUNLESS TANNING LOTIONS

Sunless tanning products, also called self-tanners, can give your skin a tanned look without exposing it to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Sunless tanning products are commonly sold as creams, gels, lotions and sprays you apply to your skin. Professional spray-on tanning also is available at many salons, spas and tanning businesses.

This month’s shoots seemed to involve a little less clothing than I am used to!

A couple weeks ago I did an Advertorial for Pepsi with Jeff Gordon which will run in Maxim Magazine in October.

It was a hilarious concept with an amazing crew!  We shot in “The Hangover” suite at Caesars Palace where Jeff Gordon did his twist on “The Hangover” So much Fun!

With the assistance of my “NASCAR expert” assistant Erika Lizzio…I styled 4 male models as Jeff’s pit crew and models Vanessa, Caroline and Brooke as sexy little maids.

This was a bit challenging because the client wanted cute/sexy NOT provocative/sexy which is a fine line.  I chose to have a shorter more form fitting version of a maid uniform constructed and added a  French maid twist to it.  I paired the outfits with round toe heels rather than pointed toe which gave it more of a pin-up look.

The layout is going to be SICK!  There was even a tiger!

Next was another shoot for Maxim Magazine at the Aria in one of the Sky Suites with 4 up and coming professional poker players accompanied by 4 amazing models : Brittany, Autumn, Jamillette and Nateasha from Platinum Agency http://www.platinumagencylv.com/

This styling I could do with my eyes closed..Vegas Party Upscale Sexy. No Problem!  What makes this shoot so amazing is the lighting!  Peter Rad is brilliant.  The lighting was beautiful and moody! Great Crew and the poker guys were a riot!

The 6 page spread will run in the June issue of Maxim.

The last of my Girly shoots was a layout for Fight! Magazine with the stunning Heidi Freeman.

We shot out at Neilson’s Landing with an Americana sexy girl next door concept.  It was so nice to get out of town and do an outdoor shoot!  Neilson’s landing is such a great location and there is so much to work with there!

This spread will run in May or June’s issue of Fight! Magazine.

    Spring/Summer 2010 Fashion Trends

    2010
    03.09

Spring/Summer 2010 trends are  feminine and flowy.

Fashion took a drastic departure from the winters black ,stark , structured look and seems to be warming it up this Spring!

Here are two of my Favorite Spring/Summer 2010 Fashion Trends.

    Peasant/Pastoral

The “typical” summer bohemian look has gone in a slightly different direction.

From the Hills of Tirol, alla Sound of Music, to the Alps with our favorite yodeling braided girl Heidi.

Prepare  for lots of gingham, embroidery, ruffles, chiffon and puffy sleeves.

Clothing will be less structured and have a loose figure flattering fit and may have you looking for a roll in the hay!

    Pattern Party!

Color is Back! Mix it up with this seasons whimsical mix of patterns.

It  is all about exotic flowers and colors, tribal, checks, graphic prints and patterns.

Combine! Combine! Combine! Put them into a pot and stir!

Sorry but remember you’re a hanger.

This one is for all my lovely models.   I am hoping you agree with me when I say that sometimes we all need a refresher course.  Remember  you are a mirror of what people want to strive-for, become or look like one day reflecting the image the client wants to portray.

Models expressing their opinion at inappropriate times.  When to express them and when to repress them.

The following scenarios happen more times than not:

    MODEL SCENARIO #1:
The stylist dresses you in clothing that the client has selected according to the look they are trying to achieve.
In some situations the stylist contacted  companies a month in advance to secure the latest trends in your sizes and sometimes the stylist has searched high-and-low, all-around-town, and late into the night to acquire the specific requested items.

You put them on, you walk out into a room full of clients, producers, photographer, etc.

You sulk around looking miserable and the client asks you “Do you like it?” and you reply “I hate it” or “It should be shorter” or “I would never wear this”.

They were asking your opinion to be nice, plain-and-simple. The client does not really want your opinion. The client has a specific look they are trying to achieve and the stylist pulled according to their directive.

I don’t care if they put you in a banana suit and asked you to sing “Mary Had a Little Lamb”, you should wear that like you own it! Be the “sexiest hottest banana” you can be!

If there is some sort of major problem with the outfit please talk to the stylist privately. Do not discuss the issue in room full of people.

We are here to work with you not against you, we want you to look your best (within the parameters the client gave us).

    MODEL SCENARIO #2:
The same can be said for the makeup. On numerous occasions I have watched a client give the makeup artist instructions on how they want the makeup—the artist brings that description to fruition only to have the model sneak off to the bathroom to change it and magically appear on set completely different—then the client confronts the makeup artist with a “What happened? Why didn’t you follow my instructions?” Don’t be “Mary Kay” and start your own make-up business right then and there – trust in the artisan, believe that they will create an amazing effect on you that will translate beautifully to film.

After you read this blog post please read the one called “Models Causing Mayhem” as well.

Competitions are for horses, not artists.

Competitions are for horses, not artists.
    Bela Bartok

It’s no secret.  I work in a highly competitive industry.

In what is relatively a small market you have Stylists, Makeup Artists, Photographers and Models all vying against each other for the same jobs.  All trying to be the best.

Sometimes it seems like we  put ourselves into a beauty pageant of sorts against each other.  Round one who has the  most talented Resume.  Round two who has the prettiest portfolio.  Round three who has the best social skills that charm the client.

We walk a fine line of Artistry verses Business.  We are artists trying to survive in a corporate structured world.  Sometimes we get sucked in.  Sometimes it gets ugly.

Maybe we should look at it differently. Rather than let it drag us down.  Rather than  looking over our shoulder all the time.

    Competition can be a positive.

I’m not saying you have to like your competitor or even get along with them but you should appreciate them!

Competition makes us stronger.  It keeps us on our toes.  Without competition we can grow lax, lazy, in a rut.  Competition makes us strive to be better!  To be at the top of our game.  To update our websites, portfolios, seek out new clients, and  be our best on every job no matter how big or small.

So come on competition.  Inspire me.  Make me work harder.  I invite the challenge and you should too!

    Caesars Player Part 2

    2010
    03.04

In Jan. I did a 2nd shoot for Caesars Player Magazine www.caesarsplayer.com

This shoot was  Spring Fashion based.

The concept was supposed to be bright and sunny Spring Fashions at Caesars pool….but…duh duh duh…a monsoon hit Vegas.  Seriously. Rain was pouring in and we were knee deep in water in a cabana trying to get sunny shots while holding the electrical equipment out of the water.  The amazing models Alex and Faviola were freezing!!!  Melissa the makeup artist was struggling to keep their hair from getting drenched.  Beth got tons of coffee to keep everyone warm.  I was freaking about the clothes and Jerry just kept snapping away!

The end result will suprise you.  The final shots look bright and sunny as if there were no rain at all!

This layout will be in the same issue as the Lacey Jones shoot available March 24 on web and on Harrah’s properties.
