Aye Aye Aye!  There is nothing like a fresh cold margarita on a hot summer day (or night)..but too many can cause you to bloat up like a Pinata!  The average margarita runs between 500-800 calories!  EEEK! No Bueno!

My sister invented this super yummy lo-calorie Margarita (no this isn’t the same one from “Real Housewives of New York..its better!). in the spirt of Memorial day and summer BBQ’s I wanted to post it so  all you calorie counters can have your Margaritas and Drink them too!

Margaritette

  • Add 1 shot of  White Tequila (100 calories)
  • To 6 ounces of  Lemon lime sparkling water (0 calories)

Summer Lovin’: Summer Essentials I Can’t Do Without!

Wella wella wella huh…Tell me more, tell me more!

Summer’s here and there will be a whole lot happening!  BBQ’s, swimming, eating, the beach, drinking, shopping, parties, etc. and with that comes sweating, sunburns, heat exhaustion, and dry skin!  How can you survive the summer and look amazing doing it?  There  are several Summer Essentials I can’t do without and neither should you!

Here’s what’s in my summer survival bag:

The most important thing is Sunscreen!  My current fav is Ocean Potion Broad Spectrum Sunblock SPF 50 Anti-Aging!  It protects from free radicals, is long lasting, water/sweat resistant, and smells like a yummy creamsicle (none of that typical sunscreen stink). (please read my previous post “Sun Cautious” about sun protection)

I HATE dirty grimy feet but I love to wear my Havaianas (flip-flops) around in the summer and feet tend to pick up dirt! My solution: Herban Essentials oil towelettes.  Throw them in your bag for a quick AMAZING smelling wipe off during the day!

In the heat my face starts to feel so dry it seems like I’m wearing a mask!  I love to spritz myself with Fresh Rose Marigold Tonic water!  Your skin will instantly move from “dry lakebed”  to “calm waters”.

Hydrate.  Hydrate.  Hydrate.  Coconut water is an amazing hydrator.  It has 15 times more electrolytes than other sports drinks and  is all natural not to mention the long list of  other health benefits!

The Summer sun can leave your hair feeling and looking greasier than a diner burger.  A Great way to freshen-up is with Jonathan Green Routine Dry Shampoo.  It’s a brush-on powder shampoo that does not require water.  It  absorbs oil, dirt and product build-up from the roots.   The shampoo also adds volume to weighed down-hair, letting you wait longer in between washing.

Hot, sweaty days and nights = shiney face.  Applying powder over and over can make your face look cakey!  Try blotting papers, they absorb the oil and reduce shine without adding more product to the face!

Your lips can take a beating from the sun!  Dry , chappy lips are no fun.  Make sure you have a lip balm with SPF to keep your lips protected!  I like Keihl’s SPF 15 balm.

Outdoor parties can leave you feeling …uh not so fresh.  Carry a light summer fragrance with you to freshen up. (HINT: don’t use a heavy  perfume in summer it can be overwhelming..stay with something light and fresh like fruits and candies)  I like Aquolina Pink Sugar Body Spritzer..it smells like vanilla and caramel..yum yum!

Model Bootcamp..Prints and Logos and Stains, Oh My!

Prints and Logos and Stains Oh My!!

Models. Models. Models.  What am I going to do with you?  Just when I thought you were all on the road to recovery from reading my Blog Posts, I worked a job where your clothing selections made me very sad.

Its time for another review on Set Etiquette and what to bring to a shoot!

The clothing you bring to a shoot is very important!  It is a reflection of the kind of model you are!  DO NOT cram your clothing selections into a grocery bag or your handbag!  Please pack them carefully into a hanging travel bag or suitcase!  Why should the photographer or director and stylist have to dig through a grocery bag to look at your clothing?  This looks VERY unprofessional!

Please DO NOT bring clothing that has stains, is ripped, frayed, or worn out!  I spent 20 minutes with stain remover, a sponge and a blow-dryer on a talents clothing yesterday!  A Stylist is not a laundry service and this can hold up an entire shoot!

Make sure the clothing you bring is CLEAN!  I cannot tell you how many times I start to steam a talents clothing only to have a wafting stink smell of  B.O. assault me!  Ewe. Wash your clothes!!

While we are on the subject of smells….PLEASE not only do you need to wear deodorant to set (believe it or not many talent DON’T!) but please have some in your model bag for touch ups throughout the day!  If you are a sweater..make sure you bring an undershirt to prevent wet arm-pitting showing through your shirt on set.

Make sure the clothing you bring has NO LOGOS!  Come on guys!  This is modeling 101,  yet I continue to see “Affliction” t-shirts and “Polo” shirts brought to shoots.  WE CANNOT SHOOT LOGOS!

Gents, please do not bring pleated pants unless you are over the age of 60 or you are shooting a golf look!  And while we are at it, NO DOUBLE BREASTED SUITS!  Come on where did you even find that?

If you are on a video shoot make sure the clothing you bring has no crazy patterns, solids are best.  The camera cannot process the patterns properly and results in an effect call “Moire” where the shirt looks all squiggly and weird.

Gents on set, DO NOT put your wallet, cell phone, keys, money, etc in your pant pockets!  On camera it will appear that you have strange lumps all over you!  Please find a safe place to leave these things!  Ladies DO NOT bring your handbag to set!  The Stylist and Makeup Artist cannot do their jobs while watching all the talents handbags!  Nor do we want to be responsible for them!

It is important to look and act professional on set and the clothing you bring makes the first impression!  Please take care of it and treat it with respect!  Many times the clothing you have plays a big part in where you get placed in the shot!  Do you want us to see the back of your blurry head in the Ad or YOU front and center?  Your clothing options can make the difference!

I’ve Got A Secret (Stylist Tips and Tricks)

2010
05.24

Stylists are like the boy scouts/girl scouts of the Fashion World….. we are always prepared for any emergency with our go go gadget kits.  People are constantly asking me for some fashion “secrets” or “tips”,  so I’m going give you a few that are not only useful on a photo shoot but also useful in everyday life.  These common  tools can save you from some sticky and embarrassing situations!

The Rubber Band.  Oh how I love you rubber band!  My favorite use for you is on a broken zipper.  When your pants/jeans have a zipper that won’t stay up take a rubber band and slide it through the eye on the zipper then loop it back over itself. Next take the end and loop it over the button on pants, put the button through button hole and voila!  Your zipper will stay up!  Rubber Bands are also great for shortening the sleeves of a shirt under a jacket.  Put the rubber band around the arm over the shirt.  Adjust the shirt until the cuffs are at the length you want then put the jacket on over it!  Perfect sleeve length!

Hydrogen Peroxide.  This can be a life saver when blood gets on clothing!  I have saved the day on set with this remedy many times! Pour the hydrogen peroxide onto the area of the blood stain and allow it to foam for a few minutes (it will “boil” the stain out) before wiping it off and laundering normally. Older blood stains may require repeated applications of hydrogen peroxide.

Toupee Tape/Topstick.  What problem doesn’t this solve?  In recent years companies have tried to make money off this stylist secret and re-brand it as “Fashion Tape” but its still just toupee tape and you can get it MUCH cheaper at any wig store!  This double sided tape can do everything from holding clothing down to skin (low cut dresses or tops) to making a quick hem in pants and securing a tie in place.

Baby Wipes.  Baby wipes are the greatest thing!  Always keep some with you!  They quickly clean a spill from clothing without leaving a ring and remove makeup on clothing!  You know how in the summer after walking around all day in flip flops your feet look dirty?  Give your feet a  quick clean off with a baby wipe and you are all fixed!

The Pencil.  Not just for scan tron tests!  Ever loose the back of your earring while you are out?  Pop off the eraser from a pencil and use it as a temporary back!  Ever had a zipper that was stubbornly stuck? Rub a number two pencil along the length of the zipper to coat it with the lead and make it slippery. (Pencils are made with graphite carbon which acts as a lubricant for the teeth of the zipper).

Clear Nail Polish.  Perfect for runs in nylons, tights and pantyhose! Just dab some on at the base of the rip to prevent further running.  Also great for a loose button!  Just apply some to the back of the button on the thread to secure it until you can get it fixed.

So when you have your next clothing emergency remember these secret stylist tips and you’ll be off walking the runway (or sidewalk) in no time!

Trees Look Taller when there is no Underbrush!

2010
05.21

Yeti.  Sasquatch . Chewbacca. Bear Rug.  Are these words that describe your body?

The days of hairy chests being cool are over guys!  Sorry Tom Selleck and Burt Reynolds, its time to manscape.

Women do not like to see (or touch) a hairy back or chest.  Protruding nose and ear hairs are just disgusting and hairy privates are  a breeding ground for odor, bacteria and germs.

The gals want a smooth clean male body and are more likely to be enticed by shaved or trimmed privates ( bonus: trimming the underbrush will make your tree look bigger)!

Manscaping was once limited to cyclists, swimmers, body-builders, models and the fire island crowd but in recent years it has become more and more popular with all types of men.

You may be asking “how do I do it?”  Well there are several options for hair removal:

1. Shaving (an inexpensive short term painless solution.  The razor is a popular grooming technique.)  Gillette has a hilarious and informative series of videos on how to shave different body parts http://www.ehow.com/videos-on_10334_gillette-body-shaving-tips-men.html

2. Trimming (the most basic way to keep the lawn length under control).  There are two tools.  Scissors and electric trimmers.  Electric trimmers will give you a uniform length of hair.  You have to be careful to cut evenly with scissors or you may end up with scraggly hairs everywhere that look like a drunk Edward Scissor Hands gave you a trim.

3. Threading . Threading is an ancient Middle Eastern technique that is becoming increasingly popular with threading shops popping up in every big city as we speak.  An esthetician uses a doubled-up strand of cotton thread to twist around individual hairs, then pulls them out from the roots. Its relatively cheap and painless.  (good for smaller areas like eyebrows, lip, beard, shoulders)

4. Laser (this is a costly permanent reduction of hair)  It requires multiple treatments and results aren’t always 100%)

5. Depilatories (these are creams that dissolve hair so that it can be wiped away)  Remember the commercials “Who wears Short Shorts?” well more and more men are!  Great for back, arms, chest, legs and AROUND your family jewels  but NOT ON THEM!!!

6. Waxing. (probably the most beneficial way as far as cost and upkeep).   It offers smooth long lasting results.

I spoke with my favorite esthetician Jaclyn Allen of the Hara Center about manscaping and here is what she has to say:

“Many more men are becoming part of an elite club of “manscapers”. Manscaping is the fine art of grooming body hair in a detailed manner. Men of all ages, sizes and sexual orientation are taking an interest. Could it be a hint from the girlfriend or just sick of walking around with a uni-brow waiting to be someones next joke……..this grooming can be done by waxing, tweezing, trimming, shaving or laser hair removal. Waxing is an affordable and tolerable way to completely remove the hair for a clean 3-6 weeks. The more frequent an area is waxed, the hairs will become trained to go on a longer interval between appointments. The most common areas treated are the back, chest, arms, ears, posterior neck, nose, underarms and of course beneath the boxers! Hard wax is used on the less flat areas such as nose and ears, etc; as that wax sticks to hair only and not the skin. The more common, flat and larger areas are usually treated with a soft wax and strips to remove the hair in a quick fashion. For those with a low pain threshold, there is a topical anesthetic spray that can be used 30 minutes prior to waxing to numb the area a bit.”

A few of Jaclyn’s tips to know before going in for a wax-

  • have a clean working area
  • have a dry working area (no lotions please)
  • try not to shave 2 weeks prior
  • ideally let hair grow to a quarter inch (length of rice grain)
  • wear loose clothing for comfort and hygiene post appointment

“Abolishing the hair makes for an overall cleaner feel. It’s a hygienic choice for making summer “bare”able!! SO, if there’s an army of hair fighting to burst out of your t-shirt; schedule your appointment today-your lover will THANK you!”

For an appointment with Jaclyn (she’s amazing! Ladies make an appointment for your man and a facial appointment for yourself!  It will be the best facial you have EVER had!)

Variety is the Spice of Life!

Keeping it  Fresh!   I love when I have a variety of projects with different styles/themes going on!  It breaks it up and keeps it exciting!  Last week each project had a totally different style!

It started out with a big shopping expedition for Lacey Jones who is hosting a new poker show called “Doubles Poker Championship”.  Lacey and I hit the mall armed with a camera and my fashion skills.  We took photos of Lacey in a variety of outfits, then emailed them to the client who picked the ones they wanted and then went back to purchase them.  Lacey has been hard at work all week shooting the show!  Make sure you tune in on Game Show Network!     Style: Colorful Hip/Trendy Clothing

(above: sneak peek of Laceys show from monitor courtesy of Krystle Randall)

After finishing up on Lacey’s wardrobe I started prepping my next job, a shoot for World Market Center with photographer Robert Kley and Makeup Artist Barbra Jo Batterman .  These ads will be on huge pillars at the airport so keep an eye out for them!  Style: Business Casual

After returning the extra wardrobe and wrapping that up  I moved on to a shoot for Julie Annes All Natural Granola, with Photographer Brian Brown and Makeup Artist Zee Clemente.  This shoot was a blast!  We got to have some creative fun with a sort of  “Campy Farmers Market” theme.

Julie’s Granola is AMAZING!  Pick some up if you get a chance!  4 flavors available at Whole Foods and at http://julieannes.foodzie.com/  Style:  Campy Farmers Market: Ellie Mae meets Maryanne from Gilligans Island

After filling up on Granola and  doing returns for Julie’s shoot, I started prepping the next one:  A Hot Wheels shoot for Mattel.  Makeup artist Melissa Conner and I hit the road and headed out to LA where our shoot was taking place.

After our Thelma and Louis style Cinco de Mayo drive to arrive in LA we set to work.   The kids were supposed to have a skateboard look so I dusted off my skateboard knowledge and watched all my years of hanging out in skate parks finally pay off!  The kids looked so cool…every kid is gonna wanna buy Hot Wheels when they see these ads! Good Times!  Style: Kids Skateboard hip/trendy

Now I’m back in Vegas and gearing up for a fashion shoot next week with M Magazine and finishing up my credits from the last Caesars Player…ah a Fashion Stylist’s work is never done!  Style for Next Week: Fashion Forward RTW (Ready To Wear)

Size Matters

2010
05.08

I have recently become very aware that people are actually reading my “Model Tips” and following them!

Last week a model asked if she could have a smoke break (she was still in wardrobe) and before the photographer or I could answer the photo assistant said “You can’t while your still in wardrobe!” Then admitted he read that on my Blog!

And a few shoots back a model was on set getting ready to shoot and said “Oh no I better spit my gum out before I end up in Christie’s blog!”  Hilarious!

So my children I will continue with the Model Bootcamp Tips as they are obviously helping and are providing me with entertainment!

Size Matters!!

Most Important Tip ever!

NEVER under any circumstance Lie to a Stylist about what size clothing you wear!

Believe it or not this happens all the time!  I once did a “period” shoot that I had to prep in LA and then fly all the wardrobe to Reno where we were shooting.  The model/actress had told me she was a size 4.  So I pulled all size 4 1960’s period wardrobe for her.

My assistant and I were in the motorhome setting up for the day when she walked in.

I said “Hi can I help you”?  Not knowing who this girl was and wondering why she was in the motorhome.

She said “Oh yes I’m your talent for today”.

My jaw dropped and I stood in silence while  I had a long internal monologue of curse words.

There was no way this girl was a size 4!  She was a size 10 if anything!

I looked over at my assistant who had a bead of sweat running down her forehead and a crazy “runaway bride” look in her eyes.  I motioned for her to  step outside with me to try  to figure this out.

It was “period” clothing folks!  No quick trip to the mall was gonna fix this!  Luckily I had bought myself a dress while vintage shopping and it fit her (barely).  Whew!

Please don’t do this to a Stylist!  Know your sizes and save yourself the embarrassment of having a stylist try to cram and stuff your jiggly parts into something that isn’t really your size or worse you bust a seam or rip the clothing trying to make it fit!

As a model it is VERY important that you know your sizes!!  There have been numerous occasions where I call a model for sizes and they say “I don’t know”.  Unless you live in a nudist colony how do you not know your own sizes!

And ladies!  You are either a 2 , 4 or 6 you are not a 3 or 5 those are Juniors sizes!

Here is what you need to know:

Ladies:

  • Chest/bra size
  • Waist
  • Hip
  • Dress
  • Shoe
  • Bikini
  • Height
  • Weight

Gents:

  • Jacket (in a number like 42R not a small, medium or large)
  • Neck
  • Sleeve
  • Waist
  • Inseam
  • Shoe
  • Hat
  • Height
  • Weight

If you don’t know these sizes get measured!!  Department store tailors will do this for free!

You should also let the Stylist know if you have any Tattoos (which may need to be covered by clothing or makeup) and if you have pierced ears or any other piercing that may interfere with how the clothing lays.

Smells like Teen Spirit

2010
05.05

Summer is here and as it heats up outside it is probably heating up inside your shoes!   When you take off your shoes do small children run away in horror? Does a wafting smell of old doritos mixed with garlic fill the room?  Do people’s eyes start to water?

Here are some tips to help you move from Foot Prison to Foot Freedom.

First if you have old shoes that stink before you even put your foot in them, get rid of them.  Start with a clean fresh pair of shoes.  Once that stink is in a shoe its never coming out!

Store your shoes with scented dryer sheets in them to give them a little “freshen up” overnight.

Always wear socks with sports shoes!  I see people out (especially men) wearing shoes, that are designed to be worn with socks, sock free!  I look down and I know.  I know it stinks in there!  Cotton socks absorb sweat and odor, without them there is nowhere for the sweat to go except into your shoes!

Next try a foot antiperspirant!  The best one I have found it Kiehl’s Superbly Efficient AntiPerspirant & Deodorant.  Apply the cream to clean feet.  Let dry then apply socks.  (ever have problems with sweaty feet slipping in high heels?  This also works great for that!  It reduces the amout of sweat your feet produce!)

And now here is my big secret tip!  Soak your feet twice a week in a tea bath!  The tannic acids found in black tea kill odor causing bacteria and shrink the pores in the feet.

Here is how:

1. Boil 1 pint of water. Add 2 black tea bags. You can use regular or decaffeinated tea. Both contain the essential tannic acids.

2. Steep the tea longer than you normally would if you were to drink the tea. Allow 15 minutes to release the maximum amount of tannic acids. The tea must appear black. If your solution is too weak, add another tea bag.

3. Dilute the tea solution with 2 quarts of cold water to create enough solution to soak your feet. Place the solution in a clean washtub or bucket.

4. Soak your feet in the cool tea solution for 30 minutes. Repeat daily for one week. As you notice your feet sweating less, you can reduce treatments to twice weekly.

5. Wash feet with a washcloth, soap and warm water to remove tea stains.

6. Dry feet .

Goody Two Shoes

When you hear the words “Comfort Shoes” usually the first images that come to mind are of Birkenstocks and “old lady” shoes.  Certainly nothing fashion forward or trendy.  For years women will suffer through foot pain and destroy their feet all in the name of Fashion.

(above: obviously not a comfort shoe)

Did you know that women tend to have more foot problems than men and that this is mostly a result of the shoes they wear?

Womens Health Magazine sites 5 Most Common Foot Problems in Women:

1. Bunions.  A bony lump on the outer edge of your big toe.  The lowest joint becomes misaligned, causing the end of the bone to jut out. Often caused by pointy heels that squash your toes.

2. Hammertoes. The joint of one of your toes (usually the second piggy) points upward instead of lying flat.  A bunion, flat or high arches, or too-narrow shoes cause your big toe to butt up against the second toe, putting pressure on the digit and causing it to contract.

3. Corns and Calluses. Raised layers of thick, dead skin. On the tops of your toes they’re called corns; on the bottoms or sides of your feet they’re known as calluses. There’s too much pressure or friction on the feet, often due to ill-fitting shoes or a deformity, like a hammertoe.

4. Plantar Fasciitis.  A stabbing or burning pain in your heel that’s often worse in the morning. The plantar fascia, a band of tissue that runs from the heel to the ball of the foot, becomes inflamed. This can be triggered by the strain of having exceptionally flat or high arches, standing or walking all day long, being overweight, or doing intense physical activities.

5. Neuroma.   Tingling, burning, or numbness in your foot. It may make you feel as if you’re walking on a pebble.
The bones of two toes–usually the third and fourth ones–rub against one another, pinching the nerve in between. Too-narrow shoes, which cram toes together, are often to blame.

There are several ways to prevent and ease the pain of these foot problems.

Wearing the right kind of shoes is a good start!

One of my favorite comfort shoe brands is Dana Davis.   http://www.danadavis.com/Index.html

(above Dana Davis “primrose” heel in black)

“Named for the company’s owner Dana Davis, the brand was inspired by her quest to find exquisite, fashion-forward shoes that would reflect the most sophisticated designer tastes and still support the health of the wearer”  Her shoes are so amazing no one would EVER know they are a comfort brand!

Taryn Rose is another great comfort shoe brand.  “Founded by an orthopedic surgeon, Taryn Rose shoes have established a broad and loyal following and are appreciated around the world for their chic looks and fabulous fit. The inspiration for creating Taryn Rose shoes comes from the belief that fashion and function should translate into what women have wished for since shoes were invented: Style that’s comfortably sexy, day and night.”

Even Cole Haan has jumped on the Comfort bandwagon incorporating Nike Air Technology into their shoes,  makeing high heels fit like sneakers!

The three major things you want in a good shoe are cushioning, arch support , and shock absorption

As we age we lose padding in the ball of the foot where we carry up to seven times our body weight so it is very important to buy shoes with cushioning.   A good test is to press your thumb along the ball of the foot area and arch of the shoe,  if it springs back there’s good padding!   Arch supports help ease pain by reducing the pressure on the nerves. Footwear with adequate shock absorption is especially important when walking on pavement or any hard surface. The impact of the feet hitting the ground is transmitted up the through the knees, legs, and lower back. Shoes with cushioning help absorb the impact of the feet striking the ground while walking, running or jumping. Shoes with shock absorbing soles not only prevent foot pain, but prevent knee pain and lower-back pain.  Cork heels are made of a material that is great for shock absorption.

Another solution is to wear a transition/commuter shoe to get to and from your destination.  Find a pair of cute flats with a thick sole and cushioning and wear them until you arrive at work or your event.

Never forget the importance of stretching and exercising your feet and toes.  I found a great book  “Fantastic Feet”which has really helped with some of my own foot pain by pilates instructor Aliesha George  http://www.centerworks.com/foot-care-resources/personal-foot-care-solutions/

The book has ”exercises specifically designed for feet in detailed instructions”.   Aliesha  says “We spend time exercising every other part of our body but don’t do much for our feet. We cram them into poorly fitting shoes, stand for long hours, pound the pavement to exercises our heart & lungs, and wear old and beloved “favorite” shoes that gave up supporting our feet a long time ago.”

Remember our feet are probably the most overused part of our body.  They keep our hips and pelvis  in alignment and create a center of balance that is essential to the health and well being of the upper body. Feet problems can lead to leg, lower back, hip and neck problems!

Take care of your feet and they will take care of you!
