How To Catch a Geeks Eye

by christiem on May 3, 2013 · 24 comments

geek

Like Penny from The Big Bang Theory you may have noticed that you are magnetically drawn to geeks faster than an electron is drawn to a proton.

Do you quiver when that hot IT guy upgrades your software? Do you tingle when you overhear a heated debate on who is the superior superhero Batman or Superman? Is Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jim Parsons, Nathan Fillion or Stephen Colbert on your celebrity clause list?  Then you are probably a Geek-ista.

I completely understand. Guys living the geek life can be just so a-dang-dork-able!

Today’s geeks aren’t the taped up glasses kind of geeks of yesteryear, today’s geek is totally chic!

Not only is he smart but he also has style. Today’s geek  is way less “Revenge of the Nerds” and way more “500 Days of Summer”.

Hollywoods Hottest Geeks

OK so you want to date a geek.  The first step is finding one!

Some of the Best places to meet a geek are:

1. Best Buy or the Apple Store- if the place has the latest technology they will come!

2. A Comic Book Store- duh!

3. A Renaissance Faire- so, maybe you are into the King Arthur type.

4. Coffee Shop- geeks spend hours there using the free wi-fi and sipping latte’s.

5. A sci-fi movie premier.  This is like THE bachelor auction of geeks.  Standing in an orderly line for hours you have plenty of time to survey the prospects.

With the Star Trek Into Darkness premier rapidly approaching (May 17th ladies mark your calendars) now is the perfect time for my tips on how to catch a geeks eye.

10 sure fire ways to grab a Geek’s attention and keep it:

1. Star Trek or Star Wars.  Know them and choose a side.

2. Be Tech Savvy. MAC or PC. Iphone or Android.  Take an educated and passionate stand on why you use which.

3. Video Games.  Learn to love them- think of this as the “Monday Night Football” of Geeks and know that at some point you WILL have to stand in line for a midnight game release.

4. The Who’s Who. Not Doctor Who, but you should be familiar with him too- know the pantheon of geek idols: Joss Whedon, JJ Abrams, Simon Pegg, Felicia Day and Chris Hardwick.

5. Have a plan of action for a Zombie Apocalypse and be ready to discuss it.

6. You will need a go-to Cosplay costume ready (Literally “Costume Play.” Dressing up and pretending to be a fictional character -usually a sci-fi, comic book, or anime character). This is super important for conventions like Comic-Con and Wondercon. Top three Cosplay costumes to get a geek’s engine to Warp Speed: Princess Leia in the iconic gold Bikini, Wonder Woman and Xena Warrior Princess.

7. The Doctor. Be able to answer which reincarnation (number) of Doctor Who we are currently on. (It’s the eleventh)

8. Comic books.  Educate yourself on the difference between DC and Marvel. Know which heroes  go with which universe.

DC: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern.

Marvel: Iron Man, Spiderman, Hulk, X-Men.

9. Current Events. Carry around a Wired Magazine and keep it visible. When a hot geek sees this it opens the door for some geeky conversation!  If you don’t have a Wired Magazine handy open blastr on your tablet or ipad- it will have the same effect.

10. Be Passionate about things you like.  Geeks respect people who are passionate, it doesn’t matter what you are passionate about- just have passion for something!

“Being a geek is all about being honest about what you enjoy and not being afraid to demonstrate that affection. It means never having to play it cool about how much you like something. It’s basically a license to proudly emote on a somewhat childish level rather than behave like a supposed adult. Being a geek is extremely liberating.”- Simon Pegg

“Geeks are just people who are interested in something, so share your passions and interests with them whatever it is.” -Felicia Day

In the Box That’s Hot!

by christiem on April 17, 2013 · 7 comments

One of the hottest things around these days is the monthly subscription box.

Boxes that arrive at your door filled with “surprise” samples of everything from beauty and grooming products to healthy snacks and dog treats.

But why are they so hot?  Why are we obsessed?

It’s simple: subscription boxes are both addictive and exciting!  When they arrive it feels like you received a super thoughtful care-package from a loved one.  This person knew your every need and packaged it in a pretty box just for you.

Let’s face it, some of us barely have time to stop and pick up toilet paper- never-mind having time to ”browse” shopping isles to “discover” new products.  Subscription boxes make it easy by delivering products to your door, tailored to your tastes, each month in a convenient little box and believe me- there is a subscription box out there for EVERYONE!

Besides, who doesn’t love getting a surprise in the mail each month, even if you are paying for it.

VLW-R-5T

Alright ladies, with Spring Fashion hitting stores as we speak and NYFW wrapping up, my head has been in a fashion frenzy of mixed seasons.

Its time to take a little fashion hiatus and talk about something we all need: cocktails!

I am about to say something that may shock most women.  I am not a big wine drinker (gasps and other sounds of shock rise from the audience).

I do however have a summer passion for Sangria but my go-to summer drink is a margarita!  Icy yummy goodness.

What’s that you say?  How about combining the refreshing iciness of a margarita and the sweet fruity taste of Sangria? Humm I never really thought of that before.

This week I tested out a shockingly delish mixer for wine that instantly transforms a bottle of two buck chuck into a refreshingly tasty drink that is sure to become my new signature summer beverage!

Vino-Licious from OWG is a Vino Freeze mix that is super easy to use.  Just add the mix to a bottle of wine, then refill the wine bottle with water and add together.  Freeze it for 3-4 hours then presto a summer drink worthy of the chicest pool party!

You can check out all the frozen mixer goodness at OWGshoponline.com

What’s your favorite flavor?

Picture Perfect Printstagram

January 9, 2013

My 5 year old niece was visiting while I was flipping through an old photo album (yes an actual printed photo album). She asked me “What’s that?” I said “A photo album”. She replied, “Don’t you have those on your ipad to look at?” It got me thinking, most of the photos we take these days are on [...]

‘Twas a Fashionable Night Before Christmas

December 20, 2012

‘Twas a Fashionable night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a Marc by Marc Jacobs Slipper Mouse  The Agent Provocateur stockings were hung by the chimney with care In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there. The children were nestled all snug in their beds wearing their Organic Cotton Long [...]

Witty Gift Ideas that Don’t Suck

December 8, 2012

Now, I know that you have been making your list and checking it twice but by now have  noticed some gaps.  We all have THOSE people on our gift giving list…….the ones that are impossible to buy for. What do you buy for the person who has everything, doesn’t need anything or just won’t tell you what [...]

Ugly Christmas Sweater Craze

November 25, 2012

Ugly Christmas sweaters are as synonymous with the holidays as Santa Claus, reindeer and fruit cake! I remember as a child seeing my great aunt wearing these on holidays and wondering what exactly was in that hot cocoa she was drinking. Even worse than seeing someone else wearing one was receiving one as a gift [...]

How to Avoid a Santa Photo Meltdown!

November 18, 2012

It’s THE ritual of the season: taking your child to see Santa Claus so they can sit on his lap, read him their list of everything they want for Christmas- and capture this magical childhood moment with a photo. Although we adults think of Santa as a holly jolly fellow, not all kids have the same reaction [...]

Agloves A glove that works!

October 29, 2012

Here comes the cold weather.  I had my first taste of it last night when I left the house in a less than Fall weighted garment and was shivering 1/2 way through the night. There is one major thing I have learned over the years about cold weather kids: If your  hands or feet get [...]
