Vegas Steal the Style

This week CBS is kicking up its boots with the debut of a new series set in the wild wild west of 1960’s, Vegas.

As you know, I call Las Vegas my home so I couldn’t miss an opportunity to discuss the fashion from this highly anticipated series!

For those of you that haven’t seen the previews here’s CBS’ synopsis:

“Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis star in VEGAS, a drama inspired by the true story of former Las Vegas Sheriff Ralph Lamb, a fourth-generation rancher tasked with bringing order to Las Vegas in the 1960s, a gambling and entertainment mecca emerging from the tumbleweeds.

Ralph Lamb wants to be left in peace to run his ranch, but Las Vegas is now swelling with outsiders and corruption which are intruding on his simple life. Recalling Lamb’s command as a military police officer during World War II, the Mayor appeals to his sense of duty to look into a murder of a casino worker – and so begins Lamb’s clash with Vincent Savino, a ruthless Chicago gangster who plans to make Vegas his own.

Assisting Lamb in keeping law and order are his two deputies: his diplomatic, even-keeled brother, Jack, and his charming but impulsive son, Dixon. Ambitious Assistant District Attorney Katherine O’Connell, who grew up on the ranch next to the Lambs, also lends a hand in preserving justice. In VEGAS, two powerful men – Lamb and Savino – are engaged in a fierce battle for control of the budding oasis, and for both of them, folding is not an option.”

Let’s talk fashion,  as Lamb and Salvino clash on the show so begins the fashion battle of 60s sleek mad-men esc suits vs. rugged retro-western wear- a fashion showdown that still has a firm hand in influencing Las Vegas style.

There is something innately sexy about a brooding cowboy right?  Mysterious, aloof and alluring. As the Fall season swings open the saloon doors try adding a little western rugged chic into your look.

You dont have to go head to toe with it but a few western accents here and there can turn you from “Average Joe who gets a NO” to “Why yes Marlboro Man I would like to ride off into the sunset with you”.

Here are my top picks from the amazing western-wear retailer Pinto Ranch on how to Steal the Style and get Dennis Quaid’s look from the CBS new series Vegas:

Pinto Ranch Milano Alamo Western Hat – 5X western hat in desert color featuring Cattleman crease crown and a 4′ brim. Brown leather hat band. $165

Western Style Fact: The “invention” of the cowboy hat  is generally given to J.B. Stetson. In 1865 the Original “Boss of the Plains” hat was  manufactured by Stetson. It was  flat-brimmed , had a straight sided crown, with rounded corners. J.B. Stetson was the first to market the “Boss of the Plains” to cowboys, and it has remained the universal image of the American West.

Pinto Ranch Rocketbuster ‘Lucky’ Western Boot. Handmade in El Paso, TX. $1,395

Western Style Fact: For boots choose smooth leathers for casual looks and more exotic leathers for dressier ones.

Pinto Ranch Miller Ranch Black and White Plaid Snap-Button Shirt – two snap-button pockets and a western yoke on front and back of shirt. $105

Western Style Fact: A yoke is  what makes a shirt “western” – when the seam in the back and on the front comes to a point.

Pinto Ranch Coppley Sport Coat – Amazing and light microfiber textured western sport coat. Looks and feels like leather. Scalloped front pockets and western yoke in back. $595

Western Style Fact: Scalloped pockets and a western yoke back are what set “western” sport coats apart from typical sports coats.

Pinto Ranch Clint Orms Trophy Buckles – Hand-engraved sterling silver trophy buckle. Sculpted star overlay with hand-engraved framing. $795

Western Style Fact: unlike other cowboy gear that originated from the styles of real working cowboys—today’s ornate belt buckles originated as Hollywood fashion statements.  In the 1950s  Hollywood’s Western stars began portraying flashier belts and buckles.  The new buckles were large, shiny, and often depicted horses, cattle, and other Western motifs. These bulky buckles were not practical for the working cowboy, but the new Western fashion statement won over rural America.

Pinto Ranch David Dear Bolo Tie – Handcrafted sterling silver fluted oval bolo tie with genuine Turquoise inset center. Deerskin cord in Black. Sterling silver tips with Turquoise teardrops.

Western Style Fact:  Silversmith Victor Cedarstaff is often credited with the  invention of the bolo tie in the late 1940s.  The story goes that  Cedarstaff was riding his horse one day when his hat blew off. Worried about loosing the expensive silver-trimmed hatband, he slipped it around his neck.  His companion joked, “That’s a nice-looking tie you’re wearing, Vic.”  Cedarstaff liked the look and soon fashioned the first bolo tie.

  1. I’m not gonna lie. I would rock those boots.
I have a couple dress shirts with the glossy snap buttons and pleated pockets. Those shirts aren’t tacky, are they?

  2. I plan this winter to get my Wild Wild West on by getting a pair of boots and maybe a hat too. Then I will go to a country bar and sport my new cowgirl look!! Yee haw!!!!!!

  3. Since I have 7 cowboy hats (youngest is 5 years old), 3 set of boots, and lots of other accessories, incorporating anything Western into my fall wardrobe will be easy. I may only wear these items seldom, but when the day requires it, it reminds me of days growing up on the farm.

  4. This is one of the shows I’m really excited about this season too! There’s something mysterious about a man in a hat and boots too. Maybe the thought of riding off into the Sunset? Great thoughts. Thanks!

  5. Oh, I hadn’t seen the previews for this one! I love Dennis Quaid so count me in. 🙂 I’ve always figured there must be something about cowboy boots with so many people in Texas wearing them.

  6. I’ve seen a commercial for VEGAS, but wasn’t aware it was set in the 1960’s. Might have to check it out! As for me, my style is far from the Wild West, BUT, I’ve been looking at boots lately and would like to get a nice pair. I’ll take my guy all decked out in everything you have here, though…even if for just one night!

  7. Love this!! You’ll soon see why I am also so obsessed — aside from the obvious. 😉 I saw the pilot awhile back, but I can’t wait to see it again tonight.

  8. Watched the show and am now addicted – loved it! Also love your selection of western wear. We are starting to make a new wine and that cork would look great in our display bottle.

  9. Totally dig this and I can’t wait for this show to start Right up my ally. I;m assuming that’s the same Lamb as Floyd Lamb State Park? Awesome. Love this stuff! I will totally rock the cowboy boots and an awesome outfit, a cowboy hat with the appropriate duds and a kick ass belt. Cowgirls/boys rock!
