Finding your Indigo Match

Denim.  Hands down the single most difficult thing for women to buy.  Shopping for it can be a little like Internet dating. You see a style, are attracted to it, love its profile but when you meet in person it falls a little short of your expectations.

Well I (with the help of Neiman Marcus) am here to be your Indigo perfect Match Maker!

Women come in all shapes and sizes and so does our denim.  You just need to be knowledgeable about the cuts and styles that are right for your particular body type and have a few “solution” tips in your arsenal.  It’s all about balance and proportion.

When fitting denim there are four basic body types: Long and Lean, Straight/Boyish, Curvy and Petite.  (You may be a combination of 2 or more of the above!)

Long and Lean

This is THE  body type we all desire to be.  Like a model gliding down a runway these women are statuesque, fit and just about anything would look good on them!  Believe it or not they have their own set of challenges when buying denim. Not only do they have to find cuts flattering to their bodies, with most designers only making  lengths up to a 34″ these ladies are challenged to find inseams that are long enough for them!

(above: Joe’s Twiggy jean with 36″ inseam)

Try these styles/brands:

HUDSON JEANS “Supermodel” has a 36.5″ inseam, Joe’s “Twiggy” has a 36″ inseam, 7 For All Mankind “Supermodel” has a 36″ inseam, Rag & Bone’s “Bell” mid rise bell bottom has a 35″ inseam, and J Brand has styles that go up to a 35″ inseam.

Fit Tip:

You don’t want to look like a Lollipop.  Avoid too skinny of a jean and a tight fitting top.  Opt for trouser and bell styles to create balance.

 Straight/Boyish

Hoping for a second puberty growth spurt to hit in your 20’s 30’s or 40’s?  Then you are probably a straight/boyish body type.  These ladies tend to lack curves and are more straight up and down.  They long to add some  “Beyonce” or “Kardashian” curves  to their look.

Try these styles/brands:

Current Elliotts Ankle Skinny, True Religions Misty Super Skinny, Rich & Skinny’s Legacy and AG’s The Premiere.

Fit Tip:

You can add the illusion of curves with styles that have a low rise waist and colorfading near the thighs, flare below the knee or have defined back pockets.  The low rise will help break up the vertical line of your body and the color fading will make your legs appear more curvy.

Curvy:

From voluptuous to hourglass and all the curvy shapes in between this body type has one of the most difficult denim challenges: finding jeans that fit in both the waist and the hips with no gap in the waistband!  Curvy gals have it hard when it comes to denim.

Try these styles/brands:

Joe’s Honey, Hudson’s Signature Bootcut 19″ leg opening and just about any style from  CJ by Cookie Johnson.

Fit Tip:

Remember Balance is the key.  If you have big hips and/or bottom, skinny jeans are not the answer!  Walk away!  You need balance.  Try boot and trouser cuts that fall straight from the hip.  They accommodate curves and the wide bottom balances out the leg. Denim with stretch is your best friend.

Petite

Its hard to find jeans in less than a 30″ inseam.  These ladies spend a fortune having their inseams tailored.  If only they could craft hats or skirts out of all that excess fabric.  Luckily skinny peg leg jeans are super hot right now!  They typically come in lengths of 28-30″ perfect for petite gals.  Tons of brands make cigarette styles that are supposed to hit just above the ankle on regular height ladies but for the petites they make a perfect length skinny jean!

Try these styles/brands:

Joes The Provocateur, HUDSON Petite Ferris and Petite Signature, 7 for all Mankind Kimmie Bootcut and Lexie Petite fit and AG’s The Stilt Cigarette Jean.

Fit Tip:

If you have a small bottom stay away from large or long pockets.  You don’t want your pocket to go past where the cheek meets the thigh.  If your bottom is flat try a flap pocket to add a little junk in the trunk.

  1. All the different cuts of jeans these days is crazy. I saw a jeans section at H&M Kids that had WAY too many cuts, including the dreaded SKINNY jeans for kids, ugh.
Anyway, I’ve always had a hard time understan what cut would best fit me as a guy, I usually buy boot cut.
    IDK…

  2. I want a pair of high waisted flared cords. That is such a sweet deal, my man just bought three pairs of new jeans last month. This event sounds awesome plus I could of gotten a pair

  3. I LOVE me some denim. The ‘oldie’ in me is terribly attracted to bell styles, and I’m always on the lookout for a cute pair that I can add into a retro looking outfit. Thanks! xoxo

  4. Well I’m little in the middle & I got much back! Hard to find a jean for all the extra love I have! I like skinny jeans but look best in a boot cut..

  5. Because I am sooo curvy and very often run into muffin top when I wear jeans, I would pick the Cookie Jeans! I think they would fit my body like hand and glove!! I am in consent search for a perfect pair of jeans!! Go Mrs. Johnson! Can a girl get a cookie!! Lmao! Great post!
