May is Melanoma awareness month.
Did you know that skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States? It is caused by Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, tanning booths or sunlamps and the most dangerous kind of skin cancer is melanoma. According to Melanoma Reasearch Alliance , the people at highest risk for melanoma are those with Fair skin, red or blonde hair, light eyes, more than 50 moles, history of sunburn or UV exposure and those with a family history of skin cancer.
Ummm. Fair skin, check. Red hair, check. Light eyes, check. More than 50 moles, check and family history of skin cancer, check. Eeek, I hit every high risk criteria!
Both my sisters, mother and I have all had skin cancers removed as well as half a dozen of my close friends. So needless to say I have become a “protect your skin” drill Sergeant.
The good news about skin cancer is that it can almost always be cured when it’s found and treated early. This is why it is super important to get a yearly skin exam or as my family calls it “the annual mole patrol” and always, always wear sunscreen.
