Meet the Men Behind Our Cameras

Husband:  “Ready?  Here we go.  On the count of three- one, two, three.  I’m clicking….”

Blogger: “Wait, wait, I wasn’t ready —Do I need to lift my chin?” “Wait, does this position make my butt look big? Can you get a higher angle.  That’s terrible take some more.”

Does this sound like you? Well, it sounds like me and the majority of the other bloggers I know.

For the most part, photographs are considered crucial to a blog’s existence. And taking them ourselves is a must, sometimes though we can’t be in two places at once.

Some bloggers pay professional photographers to take their Outfit of the Day photos, but most of us are strictly D.I.O. (Do It Ourselves) and by “do it ourselves,” I mean we wrangle our friends, family members and husbands into taking the photos of us.

I thought it would be fun to hear from a few of these supportive husbands, who have been been forced into the world of photography for their wive’s blog sake, so I sat down with three of them: Mike Gurk, whose wife delivers a personal style blog that is so good its bananas NomisNiche.com; Rob Kamber whose wife bakes up affordable fashion and tasty treats on TreatandTrendsBlog.com; and Aaron McDaniel my own adorable hubby.

Here’s a peek at what they focus in on when capturing photos for our blogs:

Did you have any photography experience prior to taking your wife’s blog photos?

Inspired by the distinguished craft of one of my favorite role models, Derek Zoolander, I’ve spend numerous hours finely perfecting the photographic style of the selfie – and thanks to an amazing invention known as the selfie stick, I’ve been able to take my skills to new heights! LOL No I had ZERO experience except with point and shoot cameras.

Do you add your opinion about what’s she’s wearing when taking the photos or are you afraid you may get hit with a shoe?

I don’t think she’d ever throw a shoe at me, for fear of the shoe getting hurt! I’ve never questioned her – honestly, I love seeing all the combinations she comes up with, it’s an art and she’s amazing at it!

Do you prefer to shoot indoors or outdoors and why?

I wish I could say indoors, but since I’m not Annie Leibovitz, I rely on the next best thing, natural lighting.

What makes for the best blog photo locations?

I think the subject should always be the star so a simple clean background is a good go-to – especially when first starting out.  Once I got a little more skilled with the camera and learned about this thing called depth of field, I opened up to more complex backgrounds to add texture while still allowing the star to shine.

What equipment do you use? Camera, lights, tools. lens etc.

We use a Canon Rebel T3 with a 58mm lens and sometimes white poster-board to bounce light.

What is your number one tip for a husband/boyfriend/partner when taking blog photos for their significant other?

Know that she’s worked really hard at building her brand and wants everything to be an echo of that – so, be patient.  Work with her, even if you think her ideas sounds crazy and trust her instincts – they’ve gotten her this far!

If you were to start your own blog what would it be about?

I’d love to be an International man of mystery; traveling worldwide while sampling beers and fine cuisine like fish and chips.

If you had to describe your wife’s blog to a bunch of guys at the bar to convince them to tell their wives about it how would the story go?

If you want a few free hours to watch the game, tell your wife about this blog – she’ll be so occupied learning about fashion and reading about beauty reviews, that you’ll easily get that game in!  Plus, she gives cool stuff away!

Funniest/weirdest thing your wife has asked you to do for her in regards to her blog?

Shooting one of her outfits of the day while she sat on Santa’s lap.  Kids were crying because they wanted to see Santa and she just ignored them and made me keep on shooting.

Did you have any photography experience prior to taking your wife’s blog photos?

I took several journalism classes in high school and a lot of photos for the school newspaper. I don’t have any proper training, just rely on what I learn online and from other colleagues.

Do you add your opinion about what’s she’s wearing when taking the photos or are you afraid you may get hit with a shoe?

My wife knows more about fashion than I will ever know. With that being said every outfit she wears for our photo shoots I love.

Do you prefer to shoot indoors or outdoors and why?

Outdoors is ideal for any fashion shoot. The natural light, background and photos are much better this way.

What makes for the best blog photo locations?

I think it is two fold. The outfit has to go with the location and make sense. We always talk about this prior to our shoots. Bounce ideas off one another for possible locations.

What equipment do you use? Camera, lights, tools. lens etc.

We have a Cannon Rebel T3 Camera with 2 different types of lenses. We also use filters at times for outside shots depending on sunlight and the shots we want.

What is your number one tip for a husband/boyfriend/partner when taking blog photos for their significant other?

Learn as much about your camera and lenses as you can. Ask others who are in photography. Watch videos online. Read anything you can and do your homework. Look at other blogs especially.

If you were to start your own blog what would it be about?

I might start a blog about movies and entertainment with a healthy mix of sports. Opinions welcome.

If you had to describe your wife’s blog to a bunch of guys at the bar to convince them to tell their wives about it how would the story go?

Very easy-most guys don’t know anything about fashion. What better way to spoil your wife than with clothes that are actually in style. Great thing about this blog is its easy to navigate. Has phenomenal ideas for any occasion and prices that range from high to low.

Funniest/weirdest thing your wife has asked you to do for her in regards to her blog?

Disregard on-coming traffic.

Did you have any photography experience prior to taking your wife’s blog photos?

None, but my father has an extensive background, so I grew up with that. When he comes to visit and we are taking Jamie’s photos he sometimes gives me tips about the different manual settings on the camera.

Do you add your opinion about what’s she’s wearing when taking the photos or are you afraid you may get hit with a shoe?

Jamie is the expert when it comes to fashion. I’ve learned my opinion falls on deaf ears. One time she had on an outfit that I didn’t really like, but it turned out to be one of her most popular Instagram posts.

Do you prefer to shoot indoors or outdoors and why?

We typically take photos outdoors since natural light is easier to work with. We have found that going an hour or so before sunset is best. That way we don’t have to worry about harsh shadows.

What makes for the best blog photo locations?

We like to find simple backgrounds that will let the outfit be the focus of the photo. Here in Las Vegas we like going to the Art District where there are a lot of good walls.

What equipment do you use? Camera, lights, tools. lens etc.

We have a basic Canon DSLR with a fixed 50mm lens. We try to stay away from situations that require any kind of fancy equipment.

What is your number one tip for a husband/boyfriend/partner when taking blog photos for their significant other?

It won’t always be easy. Sometimes we get enough outfit pictures in just a few minutes, but other times it takes us much longer. Be ready for the time commitment.

If you were to start your own blog what would it be about?

I can’t see myself starting my own blog. It’s not an easy process and you have to really grind to see results.

If you had to describe your wife’s blog to a bunch of guys at the bar to convince them to tell their wives about it how would the story go?

I’d Probably spin the story to mention how my wife writes about affordable fashion, so their wives wouldn’t spend too much money on the clothes they find, which benefits them in the long run. Plus she finds outfits that she can get a lot of use out of.

Funniest/weirdest thing your wife has asked you to do for her in regards to her blog?

No particular moment, but I would say maneuvering to get the right angle. Climbing onto rails or laying flat on the ground to try and focus on that particular item- basically being in awkward positions in public is something I have to constantly deal with.
