I have been in children’s style mode for the past few month’s working on the most fun photoshoots in New York for a toy company.
Throughout this process I have discovered that finding a good variety of fun unique kids clothes at a decent price can be pretty challenging- everything at most mass retailers looks pretty much the same and if it is unique it can cost a pretty penny- so I wanted to share a few of my secrets for styling kids.
I enlisted the help of my intern, Wilhelmina age 2 1/2 (she’s actually my assistant Tiffany’s adorbs daughter), and we headed to our secret kids shopping spot The Las Vegas Premium Outlets North to let you in on how we score the cutest kids clothes ever from some of our favorite niche children’s brands you may not know about and some tricks to style them.
Our first stop : Vineyard Vines.
This preppy Stamford, Connecticut based brand known for their smiling pink whale logo and apparel that’s equal parts polished and whimsical has become a household name but did you know they carry children’s clothing!
This is Willa’s top rated shop because just about everything has a fish “bish” on it- she also gives the store major kudos for providing a complementary coloring station where kids can unleash their creativity.
The Vineyard Vines childrens collection is available in both boys and girls sizes 2T-16 and is as equally chic as the adult pieces. Everything has a sophisticated Hampton’s-esc appeal. Clean lines and searsucker fabrics with that “I’m off to get yachty” vibe.
I am especially fond of the extra thought the brand puts into details. When styling kids the details are what matters, they are the things that make a piece “special”. A cute ruffle on the sleeve instantly transform a sundress from everyday-blah to ooh-la-la and distinctive elements like boat necks and shawl collars set a piece apart from the crowd.
FYI- The Premium Outlets North hosts the only Vineyard Vines location in Las Vegas.
J Crew- Crew Cuts
J Crew, you know it, you love it but…have you checked out their kids collection, Crew Cuts?
Nestled in the back corner of the store it’s a kids fashion wonderland. With a range of sizes in boys and girls clothing from 2T-16 it’s easy to miss because the children’s pieces blend right into the quirky, fashion-forward yet preppy adult clothing. I love a brand that doesn’t dumb down kids clothing- they keep it practical but cool and contemporary.
Willa’s favorite thing about Crew Cuts is the accessories. From fun of-the-moment handbags to luxe necklaces, trendy belts and cool sunnies they have EVERYTHING you need to take that kids look to the next level.
Trending this season for kids (just like for adults) are shorter crops on jeans and trousers as well as lived-in rolled boyfriend type jeans. My styling secret is to always pair fun whimsical socks with these types of looks, trust me it will get you compliments every-time and earn you professional level style points.
To be honest, many of my kids styling secrets are the same as my adult tips- adding a colorful belt to a plain dress can up it’s style factor by a gazillion and a quick 1/2 tuck on a tee delivers an instant cool vibe. It’s about giving the look life and depth rather than just tossing some clothing on.
Also don’t get hung up on boys dept. vs girls dept. I have found some great pieces for little gals in the boys dept. that totally “made” the look.
FYI- The Premium Outlets North hosts the only J Crew in Las Vegas.
Known for their Father and Son matchy-matchy swim sets Vilebrequin (Pronounced VIL-bra-ken) offers some of the most summer-tastic kids pieces around.
The French swim brand was founded by Fred Prysquel in 1971 and quickly became known for their bright, patterned swimwear that drys quickly in the sun.
In 1995 they launched the Father and Son concept, expanding the range of swimwear and clothing from mens to boys starting at 6 months old. This father-son bond brought a new dimension to Vilebrequin as it took on family values. Much more than a passing fad, the enthusiasm for this range is high and has become a tradition for Vilebrequin clients globally.
Featuring both boys and girls sizes 6m-14y they boast not only Father/Son and Mother/Daughter matching swim sets they also provide collections for the whole family.
Made with the same quality fast dry fabrics as the adult line these pieces are made to last and will hold up through every beach trip, water park visit and pool party you throw at them.
Willa had her eye on a gorgeous parrot print t-shirt dress and turtle print ruffle bikini.
If you are a frequent reader of my blog you know I love to mix patterns and at Vilebrequin it’s so fun and easy! Mix these wild patterns to your hearts content just make sure you use one color to anchor your mix and let that shade carry through the entire look.
Kids swimwear care tip- ALWAYS wash you swimwear inside out, in cold water with NO FABRIC softener and hang to dry.
Willa quite literally shopped til she dropped. She was fast asleep as we packed up our purchases and headed to the car.
