Pucker Up: taking care of your lips

Your Lips are one of the most sensative parts of the body.  No one wants to pucker up to dry, chappy lips!  Our lips are exposed to bad weather, the sun, chemicals from make-up and various stressful foods everyday which leads to alot of wear and tear on our kissables!  Giving them a little extra care will keep them in smooching shape!

Exfoliate and Moisturize!

You have to exfoliate!  Exfoliating removes the dead skin cells from the surface and leaves the skin softer and with a more even tone.  (Guys this goes for you as well!  Adding balm on top of dry chappy lips isn’t gonna solve your problem, you have to remove the dead skin cells!) Many companies make lip exfoliating sticks that you can purchase but I am going to share with you a  make-up artist home remedy secret treatment that works wonders on your lips and costs next to nothing!

Honey/Sugar Home Remendy Lip Treatment:

Take about 2 tablespoons of plain table sugar in a small bowl. Add honey, one teaspoon at a time, until it reaches a nice, thick, sticky, consistency. If you want to add a moisture element, add a few drops of Olive Oil and blend well.

At the sink, get a bit of the mixture, and start gently rubbing it on your clean lips (remove any lipstick, gloss, or balms first). Go gently! Make sure you lightly scrub all lip surfaces and the corners.

Rinse off and follow with lip balm.

Tip: When on the go its great to keep a couple sugar packets and a honey stick in your makeup bag so that you can do a quick exfoliation anywhere! (for models especially after a long shoot when your lips take a beating)

Your lips will feel soft, smooth and will be less prone to chapping if you do this at least once a week.

Lip Balm is a major must!  Lipsticks and glosses can dry lips out and chap-sticks don’t give you the proper moisture.  You need to have a great balm!

My all time hands down favorite lip Balm is Smith’s Rosebud Salve!

“This cult-favorite, multi-purpose lip balm has been popular for over 100 years. An Old Family Standby Since 1895, this world-famous salve has been re-discovered by Hollywood stars and makeup artists. Rosebud Salve is still a favorite to aid in the relief of chapped and dry skin, blemishes, diaper rash, and detergent burns. Rosebud Salve is also a wonderful lip moisturizer and natural looking lip gloss. It moisturizes dry lips, calms and heals irritation, and soothes the sting of minor burns. Try dabbing on dry elbows or knees to condition, and relieve dryness. Also an excellent remedy for the treatment of diaper rash. The original flagship product, Smith’s Rosebud Salve remains our top seller. A glossy, non-sticky, non-waxy, texture makes this balm stand out. Only a dab is necessary, ensuring that one tin lasts a very long time! Mix with lipstick for extra shine. During allergy and cold season, dab on a dry, irritated nose to relieve discomfort.”

I NEVER go anywhere without it! This is one of my TOP 5 Products EVER!!!!

Tip: Put this on at night before you go to bed and you’ll wake up with soft, smooth lips!

  2. I’ve been using Fresh’s Sugar Lip Balm and love it. I welcome your tip on sugar and honey, I’m not always where you can go to a major department store so it is nice to know how to take care of chapping with home products. Thanks. I’m definately going to pick up some of Smith’s lip balm.

  3. Being a Senior adult we welcome any ideas to find and use ways to keep our skin moist, supple and exfoliated. I will try the quick tip with the honey and sugar!!! I have never tried Smith’s products and would welcome the opportunity to do so before I go and buy them. Anything to help with dry lips and that taste good would be wonderful!!!!

  4. Thanks for the info. I love hearing about different home remedies. And I’m gonna have to try some of these lip balms. Las Vegas weather isn’t very nice to my lips 🙁

  5. My son uses Smith’s lip balm – strawberry, and he also never goes anywhere without it.
I will definitely try your recommendation – thanks for the tip.

My secret is – I keep my gloss on me all the time to make sure I keep my lips moisturized.

  6. It sounds old school, but I’ve used the Mary Kay lip exfoliator for years! It comes in a two piece set– squeeze tube of exfoliator and the balm. It’s a little rough, so I’m so thankful for the sugar and honey remedy and the Smith’s tip!

    Thanks Christie–you’re the best!

  7. What an easy way to exfoliate. I have used Sarah Happ’s exfoliant for a while. It’s a sugar exfoliant, too. My cosmetologist told me to use my toothbrush! That seemed rather, well, bllaaaaaghhh! 🙂

Thanks, Christie! I will look for Rosebud Salve, Minted Rose Lip Balm, and Strawberry Lip Balm! They sound luscious!

    Hugs,
    Ann

  8. I love to use these tins in my kit when I travel. I can take them onboard and they don’t count as a liquid like a gloss! Excited about new flavors and colors…Thanks!!!

  9. LOVE LOVE LOVE these balms. So moisturizing! Good advice Christie!! You are the guru of… um… EVERYTHING!!! Hw do you know so much? Remind me to NEVER play trivial pursuit against you BUT it is great, whenever I need advice on gift giving, where to buy, or really just anything you are my go to girl. Keep up the amazing blog- I think your going to be famous very soon for it!

  10. whoops.. this is Krystle, not Jake. I am on his computer and apparently signed in under him instead of me. oops!!

  11. Hi Christie! Another amazing blog posting from you 🙂 I love the topic and always trying to find lip moisturizers and balms that actually work. I think it is very important to keep your pout kissable at all times, especially here in Vegas where it is dry heat and can make your lips chapped!! I always exfoliate my lips when exfoliating my face. I usually apply a good amount of either lip conditioner from MAC or old fashioned vasoline. I have not tried Smith’s lip balm, but have seen it featured in many magazine and I think its sold at Urban outfitters? So I hope I can be the lucky winner and get to try this amazing product!

  12. I keep my lips juicy by kissing the succulent, moist lips of my beautiful gf. Between that technique and using Bert’s Bees, there is no room for chappin’ up in this lip house.

  13. My secret is Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme. It leaves my lips very smooth, and it really works to plump. (My top lip is now much closer to full-size!) 😉

  14. I really enjoy Lush’s lip scrub! I use Mint Julep, but the bubble gum smells delicious and I think they have a chocolate or vanilla one. I scrub, scrusb, scrub, and load up on lip balm– my faves are Korres Lip Balm, Burt’s Bees, and there’s a drink company in Louisiana called Island Oasis that produces a lip balm every year for the summer that smells like pina colada’s and super moisturizing!

  15. Thank you again Christie, for another great article, we don’t have it avaliable in Ely, but would love to know where to purchase it the next time I get to the City!!!!

  16. Hi Christie! I love the sugar and honey home treatment – been using it for years and it works wonders (+ tasty!). I also love Clinque’s “All About Lips” – it’s like a lotion for your lips!

  17. I appreciate any help in regards to lip protection
I like – I generally use Kiehls and Fresh’s Brown Sugar but I will def. try Rosebud!!!
    thank you!!!
