DIY Shoe Deodorizing Sachets

Baking Soda Shoe Sachet

Have some sneakers that are smelling a little funky?  I have an oh so easy and TOTALLY natural DIY to freshen them up.

We have all had to deal with it in one way or another.  Stinky, musty, “put those outside” shoe stink.  The smell creeps through the whole house offending every nose it comes in contact with.

Luckily I have a quick, easy and inexpensive fix to banish that shoe funk. DIY Shoe Deodorizing Sachets made with things you probably already have lying around the house. All it takes is some baking soda, coffee filters, essential oil and rubber bands.

I always wonder “WHY” a natural or DIY solution works.  What is the science behind it?  Well, this one is pretty simple.

Baking soda or sodium bicarbonate, is a powdery substance with a slightly base (alkaline) pH. It has the effect of neutralizing the acid pH of many substances, including the moist air in shoes where bacteria thrive. Like many substances that cause odors, human sweat is slightly acidic in nature, and baking soda’s apparent magic may be due to the fact that it neutralizes the acids that foster bacteria.

The essential oil component is important because it does so much more than just make your shoes smell fantastic.  Many essential oils are also antimicrobial meaning that they can kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria and/or fungus.

That means that with the help of essential oils not only are odors removed, but whatever might be living in your shoes is also killed reducing the how quickly your shoes will become smelly again.

That’s it, let the baking soda go to town soaking up all the odors inside your shoes. The longer you let it sit the better your results will be. I recommend you let them sit for a good 24 hours.  I will even keep them in until it’s time to wear the shoe again.
