Summer Solstice Honey Yellow

This past weekend we celebrated the Summer Solstice which marks the beginning of summer and the longest day of the year.

Early dawns. Long days. Late sunsets. Short nights. The sun at its height each day, as it crosses the sky. Meanwhile, south of the equator, winter begins.

To celebrate this official celestial start of summer I spent the day outside, planting in my garden, dipping my toes in the pool and enjoying honey cake (recipe at end of post).

Honey Cake has a long tradition with the Summer Solstice- in ancient times people would leave honey cakes in the garden on the night of Midsummer’s Eve to delight the woodland spirits and faeries.  What better way to embody summer than with sunny, golden, straight from nature honey!

The only sweetener in Honey Cakes is well.. honey so they aren’t too sweet which makes pairing them with fresh fruit really easy. I also recommend adding a couple scoops of non-dairy ice cream!

I was so inspired by the season that I wanted to create a honey toned monochromatic look.

You might be thinking “Wait a minute Christie, isn’t a monochromatic look all ONE shade of color?”  Well, yes and no.

The term “monochromatic” is composed of two words: “mono” meaning single and “chromatic” meaning color. So a monochromatic outfit would consist of pieces of one color. This doesn’t just mean wearing one hue head to toe it also means wearing different shades and tints of the same color.

To create the perfect monochromatic look, make sure you mix textures and fabrics within your monochromatic outfit! You want to add visual interest, depth, and dimension to your look so it’s not one-dimensional or boring.  This includes shoes and handbags- they both play a part in adding texture to your outfit.

Monochromatic outfits don’t have to be made up of just solid pieces either; you can (and should) incorporate patterns or prints.

Let’s exercise your styling muscles!  This week I want you to create a “sunny” or “nature inspired” monochromatic look.  Something bright and happy!  Tag me on Instagram- I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Happy Solstice- don’t forget to scroll down for my Honey Cake recipe.

Loose and Draped Dress Silhouette

One of the most perfect summer 2019 fashion trends is the draped dress silhouette.

Simple designs, with a loose draped feel make perfect sense for warm weather days (and nights).

These barely there dresses feel and look luxurious, but they are comfortable, feather-light and can be perfect;y dressed down for day or elevated with jewelry and heels for an evening out or a special event.

The key to mastering the trend is really effortless!

Look for dresses that drape simply over the body (nothing too tight or structured) and have a nostalgic feel or vintage-esc print. Anything that feels like it’s from a fabulous vacay gone by.  It should just gently graze the body, feel billowy and be so comfortable that you could mistake it for a nightgown.

Belt your draped dress to give it shape or “let it be” loose and free.  This oh-so-versatile silhouette will totally bend to your mood and personal style.

It is by far one of the most wearable trends of summer 2019

Animal Print Trend: It’s a Jungle Out There

Animal Print Trend

I’ve been talking, posting and writing non-stop about how hot hawaiian and tropical prints are for SS18 but have I mentioned that for Pre-Fall and Fall 2018 animal prints will be leading the pack?

The animal print trend game is strong this Fall.  The shows were packed with animal prints, from Dior to Herrera, Stella McCartney to Saint Laurent. Designers took inspiration from the notebooks of zoologists incorporating the ENTIRE animal kingdom into their designs everything from Leopard to Zebra, exotic tigers and even snakes.

I know, I know… you are wondering why I am talking about Fall when it’s a 113 degrees outside but in order to make smart clothing purchases now you have to look a season ahead, which is precisely why I became instantly starry eyed when I saw this dress.

It was totally love at first fashion sight.  Picture a rom-com montage of me and this dress laughing, sipping cocktails, walking hand in hand on the beach and riding off into the sunset together.

Yeah it was that and here’s why….first, it has a tropical print so it’s hot NOW and second it has an animal print so it will be hot LATER PLUS it has 3/4 sleeves (I told you all about why I love these HERE) and it’s a shirt dress, which is one of my favorite silhouettes.

Wear it now for summer with sandals and wear it for fall with boots, a leopard or zebra coat and a fun animal print bag.

Yaas! Oh Yaas!

The animal print trend fits in so flawlessly with the tropical print trend that there is really no reason to wait until Fall to start rockin’ it.

Incorporate animal prints into your summer wardrobe by pairing leopard with palm prints or zebra with tropical florals.

A Hawaiian print button down shirt becomes oh so tropical chic when paired with a sleek leopard print pencil skirt or if you just want to take your animal prints as a garish on your tropical drink of a look try mixing in a fun parrot print clutch or tiger striped earrings.
