Heritage Coats

Buying a new coat is kind of a big deal. Unlike other pieces in your wardrobe which change with trends, a new piece of outerwear takes more thought and money.

You’ll wear it every day throughout the winter and it will more than likely be in your closet for multiple seasons. PLUS it’s going to go OVER all of your clothes for months on end and is the main thing people will see, so it’s GOT to look good.

With nostalgia continuing to dominate the fashion industry retro silhouettes and classic cuts are everything, which is a good thing because you will be able to wear them for years to come!  Thank you Gucci for leading the charge on bringing back the past!

My number one pick if you are going to invest in a coat this season is a Heritage Coat. Not only is a Heritage Coat super stylish, practical and useful, it will also pull together any outfit in an instant.

What is a Heritage Coat? You may not know the name but you definitely know the coat.

A Heritage Coat refers to a design that has been has been used for decades (i.e. it has a heritage), it’s classic, sophisticated and has a chic retro vibe. In other words, if you were wearing a Heritage Coat and hopped in Doctor Who’s TARDIS, took a ride in the Delorean with Marty McFly or stepped through the stones at Craigh na Dun you’d be perfectly suited in any decade.

Its place in fashion history, on the backs of Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Kate Moss and just about every fashion icon EVER gives it a solid pedigree.

Typically Heritage Coats are a structured cocoon silhouette with a collar and front buttons that lands at a 3/4 knee length and constructed from wool or wool-blends so they keep you super warm!

Uber versatile they can be worn over everything from sparkly dresses to sweaters and skirts or jeans and a tee and are an easy way to look like you’ve put in a lot of effort.  The perfect piece to add to your wardrobe now and to keep wearing for season’t to come!

The New Anorak Jacket

Anorak Jacket

There is a definite fashion meets function vibe sweeping the fashion scene and there is no better proof of it than the rapidly rising popularity of the Anorak Jacket.

Anorak Jackets were originally constructed as a pull-over jacket in the 1940’s as a means to keep the troops dry. The lightweight fishtail parka infiltrated the fashion scene several years later as a key garment for members of London’s mod scene. After that, it gained a bad rap, more associated with ’90s L.L.Bean catalogs and the granola crowd.

This season designers have reinterpreted this camp-ground classic, reinventing and elevating it into a fashion-must in the form of long-sleeved t-shirts, short sleeved sweatshirts, figure hugging mini dresses and zip up parka-hybrid jackets.

The trend has its roots in the street-style Gorpcore scene but spread quickly to become a staple piece in just about every Fall 2018 collection. Ferragamo glided down the runways with uber chic poncho type anoraks, R13 showcased vibrant yellow and safety-orange pocket clad anoraks, Burberry sported slouchy over-sized sporty zip up anoraks and Off-White manifested equestrian-inspired floor-sweeping drama filled hooded cape-like anoraks .

Nowadays, REI-inspired wardrobe accents are as much the mark of a fashion gal as, say, chunky-soled sneakers or leopard print anything.

So incorporating one into your seasonal look will totally earn you a fashion badge of honor.

You’ll want to wear yours slightly oversized and pair it with something feminine like a flirty party dress or flowing skirt.  Try adding a glammed up bag and a little sparkle to create a perfectly styled sporty/feminine mash-up.

In the Details: I had to share the story of this clutch.  I had been wanting an acryllic/lucite clutch FOREVER but the Edie Parker ones are crazy expensive.  Last year at the Neiman Marcus Holiday Blogger Brunch we were introduced to these cute double sided clutches by Bari Lynn which are sold in the CHILDRENS department for a fraction of the price.  One side says “LOL” and the other “OMG”. I snatched this one up on clearance AFTER Christmas for next to nothing and it’s quickly become one of my favorite pieces.  This year they have a tons of cute ones including a Naughty/Nice, Crazy/Cool and a bedazzled stars one!
