Adding Texture to Your Outfit

Adding Texture to Your Outfit

While mixing prints is one of my favorite ways to add personality to any look, adding texture is another sure fire way to add interest to your outfit.

Memorable outfits all have one thing in common, they have depth.  Depth through color, prints or texture is what makes a look “special”.  It’s what bring’s it to life.

Even if you are going for a monochromatic look you need depth.

The key is to strike a balance between textures. Creating harmony and tension between textures allows your outfit to be more than just colors and shapes and gives it true depth.

It’s like a “Will They/Won’t They” romance plot on a television show.  It’s the tension between two different things that creates the excitement week after week, season after season. It’s also that tension/contrast that takes an outfit to the next level.

Texture can be the weave of the fabric, the density of the cloth or even strategically placed details. Detailing like ruffles, pleats and ruching add texture to your look no matter what type of fabric.

Think about the contrast between soft and hard, polished and dull, flowing and structured, edgy and feminine. If everything is the same, what makes an outfit interesting? Textures.

Creating contrast with textures can make an otherwise simple outfit have depth and look more elegant.

If you’re new to adding texture to your outfit, I’ve put together a little cheat sheet of texture pairing for you to try:

  1. Knit + Chiffon
  2. Velvet + Silk
  3. Leather + Denim
  4.  Suede + Silk
  5. Boucle + Denim
  6. Cashmere + Tweed

Remember, it’s about creating that tension between to opposing forces that creates a memorable look. With Fall just around the corner now is the perfect time to experiment with texture through adding layers.
