What is Gorpcore?

What is gorpcore

You may have heard the term thrown around in fashion circles, seen it in print but skimmed over it or thought WTF is that but Gorpcore is a “Thing” and it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Gorpcore is the new Normcore, only equipped for the outdoors. Sure, normcore got us into mom jeans, nondescript sweatshirts, and tennis sneakers. But lately, “Good Ol’ Raisins and Peanuts” (yes, that’s what GORP stands for- named after the trail-mix used by hikers) fashion has been running wild with its own spin on “normal.”

Outdoor gear is officially in.

It’s all about utility and function. ‘Mountain chic’, ‘camping glam’ and ‘ugly pretty’ might be some of the words used to describe the look which mixes in practicality with designer labels, current shapes and runway-worthy silhouettes.

Think a high low mix with the high being something like a Balenciaga Anorak jacket and the low being a pair of Tevas.

Windbreakers, hiking boots, and recycled-polyester fleece. Basically, anything Patagonia, the North Face, Teva, Columbia, and Birkenstock paired with painter pants, Vans, Hawaiian shirts, and Dickies because head-to-toe outdoorwear would be too literal. Fanny Packs can thank Gorpcore for their recent  comeback and so can cargo pants.

Gorpcore’s main idea is that the unfashionable can be fashionable—if you wear it right.

Here’s a peek at some perfectly GORPCORE looks from Fenty x Puma to get you in the mood for a shopping spree at REI.

How to Elevate a Sweatshirt

How to elevate a Sweatshirt

Sometimes a sweatshirt is just what the fashion doctor ordered.  Warm, cozy and basically perfect they are like the comfort food of fashion.

Even though it feels like you are taking a fashion break, this off duty staple can be so much more than just a lazy day ensemble.

For the past couple seasons we have seen a whole new side of the off-duty go-to: sweatshirts looking chic and elegant, and not anything like you’re on the way to the gym.

This season the love affair with sweatshirts continues with The Elevated Sweatshirt.

How do you elevate a Sweatshirt?

Well, sweatshirts can be elevated by stylish shapes or fancy decorations, with split seams, trendy sleeve emphasis, graphics or tweaked proportions.

They can also be elevated by how you style them!

Layered:  This is a more tailored, feminine take on the trend, and an easy way to try out wearing the look. Perfectly preppy, reach for a slimmer fit, crew neck sweatshirt and layer it over a collared shirt.  I love layering with collars that have fun details or embellishments.

Vintage Look: A vintage sweatshirt (or vintage looking sweatshirt) is always a good idea. Pair with flouncy skirts, jeans, pajama pants, trousers, leather skirts, layer them over a dress or under a denim jacket.

Lampshading: Lampshading is the pairing of boots with a large or oversized sweatshirt —it has been blowing up on Instagram. The oversized top is meant to make the silhouette of a lampshade in comparison to the wearer’s legs.

With a Skirt: Opposites attract. This look is a great mix of feminine and masculine, edgy and sporty.

How will you style your sweatshirts this season?

Deal Alert:  These blue velvet booties are another one of my killer TJ Maxx scores!  I snagged them for $22. Seriously TJ Maxx has the best shoe deals right now!

Just a Dash of Metallics

Fall 2017 Fashion Trends

Designers brought out the Heavy Metal for the Fall 2017 shows.

Metallics were present in everything from bedazzled retro disco-ball boots at Saint Laurent to futuristic space-girl ensembles at Chanel and Miu Miu making the message clear, Fall 2017 is the Time to Shine!

As is often the case, runway looks don’t exactly translate easily to street looks. If you’re not ready to go full mylar balloon jumpsuit  a la Comme des Garcons (and lets face it who is) then opt for pops of silver as opposed to blinging it out head-to-toe.

My advise is to play with metallic accents before you go full-on astronaut with the metallic trend.

A silver bag or glittery boots are a safe way to guild your look this season.  Try pairing a fun metallic jacket or bag with a basic tee and jeans then work your way up to incorporating more bold statement making metallic pieces.

Silver will liven up the simplest of outfits or will work as a neutral when paired with loud prints or bold primary colors.  Just be careful to make sure your metallic pieces look luxe and not cheap.  Faux silver leather and some fast fashion liquid silver pieces can look tacky rather than trendy.

Shine on!

How to Add the Western Trend to Your Look

Western Fashion Trend

The Fashion world went bat S*&^ crazy when they saw the DIOR RESORT 2018 show “Dior in the Desert” back in May.

Donned in Western Inspired looks instead of on a runway, models walked back and forth on packed desert dirt in the middle of the Santa Monica Mountains in the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve just after sunset as hot air balloons swayed in the background.  Seriously it was magical, and after the show hit the web not a single fashionista alive could wait even one more second to infuse that Wild Wild West vibe into their own closet.

Spanish Style Cowboys hat’s immediately sold out from coast to coast.

But before the DIOR show even happened designers were already tipping their hat’s to the Modern Cowgirl in the FW17 shows.  Western motifs were everywhere from DSQUARED2 to Cavalli and Chloe in the form of grommeted leather jackets, fringed shirts, leather pants and prairie dresses.

So what does that mean for you?  Well yes, the Western trend is HUGE this season but that doesn’t mean you have to ride into Fall guns a blazin’ looking like Annie Oakley.

You can give your Fall look a dash of Yee-haw by adding a few key elements of western and prairie style while still staying true to your own personal vibe.

Opposites attract, try pairing cowboy boots with a flirty dress, or add fringe elements such as a jacket or bag to your evening look.  Remember CONTRAST is a fashion girl’s best friend.

By choosing one or two western inspired statement pieces to do the talkin’  you stay on-trend without looking like you are wearing a costume.

3 Fall Trends You Should Know

Any moment now the big fat delicious September issues of your favorite fashion magazines will land in your mailbox packed full of Fall Fashion goodness.

Time to get those pens ready and take note of What’s in, What’s Out and What you need to get your hands on NOW!

As a Fashion stylist I am always working a season ahead (right now I’m looking at trends and planning shoots for Resort 2018) so its pretty fair to say that I know my way around Fall 2017’s must-haves  (I have been working with them since June).

To get you up to Fall Fashion speed and in the fashion-know I focused this weeks Outfit of the Day on three of my favorite Fall 2017 trends: moody florals, high necklines and boxy silhouettes.

Moody Florals are not only an absolute must-have for fall they are also the most seamless way to transition between seasons.   Your fresh, light springy floral prints turn darker and more opulent for fall.  Think bouquets of burnt orange, caramel, toffee, burgundy, oxblood, brown, deep blues and rich purples.

The perfectly moody fall floral I’m wearing was actually once a dress that I scored on the clearance rack at Neiman Marcus Last Call for $25.  I loved the top of the dress but not the bottom- it was way too short for me- so I had my tailor transform it into this oh-so-on-trend high neck blouse!

High Necklines.  For Fall 2017  The Victorian Era reigned the runways.  Loads of lace, ruffles, and high necklines cascaded down the catwalks of the most notable designers.  Expect to see regal high necklines all season long.  The good news about this trend is that its super chic, perfectly romantic and incredibly flattering.

Boxy Silhouettes are everything this season.   Designers got Utilitarian with workwear-inspired boxy shapes in everything from denim to boiler suits, suiting, layering pieces and topcoats.

This beautiful boxy Longchamp jacket was my score of the summer. I was combing through the depths of the Nordstrom Rack Clearance section and stumbled upon it for $100!

#Winning

But it gets even better.  It was a clear the rack day so I got another 25% off the $100!

Yaas oh yaas.

Stylist Tip: Remember that trends are meant to mix and match.  I used THREE trends to create this chic fall day look. You don’t have to go head to toe Victorian or over the top with boxy on top and bottom.  Let the trends be fluid, use them to inspire you to create something new.

What Fall Trends are on your Must-Have list this season?
