Festive but Make it Fashion

Ah, the holiday season, this is the time of year when you get to dress up, go out and have some serious fa-la-la fun while celebrating.

..but with all that celebrating comes a daily fashion dilemma- how to look festive but not cheesy.  Festive but make it Fashion.

I love a good Ugly sweater as much as the next person (hey I’m all about the Kitsch) but sometimes festive holiday dressing calls for something a little more subtle, a little more “fashion”.. think of it as Chic-mas dressing.

For those instances when a blinking light-up Ugly Christmas Sweater or a “Here Comes Santa T-shirt” doesn’t fit the dress-code, I devised a little cheat sheet for dressing festive yet chic this Christmas season.

Chic-mas Dressing Tips:

Pick your color palette.  Start with a neutral holiday hue as your anchor- black or white.  Then choose a holiday color to carry the look: a shade of red, or a shade of green.

Choose fabrics that feel warm and luxurious.  Satins, velvets, cashmere, knits… they always make any outfit feel more special…. and keep you warm when it’s chilly.

Add some sparkle.  The tree shouldn’t be the only thing getting decorated this time of year.  The holidays are the perfect time to incorporate some metallics into your look. Sparkle is a no-brainer when it comes to holiday dressing, just be sure to not over-do it.  Small accents of metallics work best- it could be a necklace, a bag or metallic details in your clothing.

Add some whimsy. The holidays are all about whimsy.  Add in pieces that celebrate that like a fantastical tulle skirt or puffy statement sleeves.

POP in one more holiday color- An accent shade will really help kick your look up a notch and give it depth. Cranberry is a rich muted shade that still say’s holiday season.

Calm it down.  By now you are feeling festive AF.   You don’t want to make your look so much of a thing, you know? To avoid looking too dressy or over styled you need to ground your look with a piece that is more casual- think a wool or tweed blazer, boots or even a denim jacket.  Contrast always makes for a more interesting look.

Keep these tips in mind while donning your apparel this season, trust me it will give your holiday look a chic twist!
