Defining your personal Style

Trying to putting a label or name to your personal style can leave you a little tongue tied.

If I asked you right now what your personal style was would you be able to answer?  Most likely you would struggle with defining it. Besides the fact that our personal style is ever evolving, none of us are just one thing or one mood- we each appreciate a handful of different styles. But which one truly speaks to you?

When you close your eyes and picture yourself what are you wearing?

One of the first things I ask my clients is “who are your style icons”. This helps narrow what types of style attract you. Most people are a mix, me I’m a little Jane Birkin with a dose of Iris Apfel, plus a dash of Zooey Deschanel.

Once you gather a collection of people to get inspiration from look beyond the names, and focus on the outfits. What is the common denominator? Pick a few words to describe the vibe of the looks. Are they classic, modern, eclectic, bohemian, or trend-forward? Settle on a handful of words that feel true to your style, this will help you clarify and define your look.

Snap a pic.  There are those days you feel like a BOSS and totally unstoppable in a look you created.  Take a pic of that look for future reference.  These are the outfits that epitomize your true personal style, and should serve as inspiration for spin-off outfits.

Identify your signature item. Just like a signature scent all stylish gals have a “thing” that is part of their style identity. It can be as simple as a personalized piece of jewelry or as memorable as a leopard coat.  Never in a million years would I have thought mine would be mixed prints but that has become what I am known for, my signature.

Work to your strengths, is there something people compliment you on? Whether it’s your crazy good collection of footwear or your ability to style dresses like no one else, wearing clothes that play up your best style strengths will always look stylish, no matter what is currently trending.

Know your body.  Remember that certain styles look better for your shape than others do, so you must know your body and what silhouettes work best for it.

Last but not least trust your instincts, and wear what makes you feel like the best version of yourself. Your personal style should encompass a collection of pieces that make you feel powerful and stylish. If you have more of a classic style, wearing the season’s most out-there trend pieces is going to look and feel like a costume.

It’s ok to try new things and trends but make sure they fit into your own personal style.  Maybe you want to explore the tie dye trend this season but your vibe is more sleek and tailored.  Look for tie dye pieces that are monotone in color (maybe just a navy/white combo) that can serve as an accessory piece like a great tie dye camisole under a tailored blazer.  That way you can play with the trend but it still works for YOU!

Defining your personal style is the key to curating the perfect wardrobe plus it makes shopping so much easier. Instead of hitting the mall, wandering aimlessly then buying a bunch of random things that give you buyers remorse later it becomes a calculated mission to target in on just the right thing your closet was missing.

Always keep in mind the fundamentals of style: Wear what looks good on you, what flatters your shape, and what reflects your personal style.

Embrace it, refine it, and don’t fight it.
