A Touch of the Macabre

Adding Macabre to your look

Maybe it’s the Halloween season or maybe it’s just my constant NETFLIX binging of “The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell” but I have been craving a bit of the macabre lately when it comes to my clothing.

Tis’ the season when Lily Munster, Morticia Addams, Vampira and of course Elvira rule our tv screens. These dark ladies killer iconic styles have influenced many a fashion trend.

From Zac Posen to Rick Owens, we’ve seen more than a few celebs and designers give a nod to Morticia Addams style.

American Horror Story Coven single handily revamped the look of the modern witch, giving female sorceresses some seriously supreme style and manifested a new generation of witch hats- the wide brimmed fedora.

Black dresses with white collars have become known as “Wednesday Addams” dresses, black and white stripes suits are called “Beetle Juice”suits and all of those deep plunging neckline dresses you see EVERYWHERE from YSL to Nasty Gal took their cue from Elvira.

The touch of the macabre influence is felt everywhere and this is the perfect season to satiate your hunger for dark clothing, everything velvet and of course calavera details in an effortlessly chic way!

To craft your look choose pieces that it are unusual or luxurious in some way.  Combine a variety of dark fabrics like velvet, satin, silk, leather, and lace to create depth and interest.  Keep in mind EVERYTHING doesn’t have to be black.  Play with layering dark tones of black, gray, midnight blue and oxblood with pops of white.

Adding the perfect dose of the macabre to your everyday look without it becoming a costume requires a little bit of fashion self restraint so remember to add those details in a way that suits your own personal style.
