New Perspective on Oversized Sweaters

Sometimes, like everything else in life you need to look at your wardrobe from a new perspective.

As a stylist I always try to look at fashion in fresh, new and interesting ways- jackets worn on just the shoulders, tops buttoned off kilter, shirts worn under dresses and sometimes even clothing worn backwards or upside down.

We all love a good oversized cardigan.  They feel cozy and familiar but they can also be shapeless, too long and quite bulky.

It just so happens that I have a little style hack that will get you twice the wear on that oversized cardigan by giving you two completely different looks.

Flip it.  Yes you read correctly flip that cardigan over and wear it upside down.  This will completely change the silhouette of your cardigan and give it a “cropped” aesthetic. I love styling cardigans like this with dresses and skirts or high waisted jeans so that my cardi isn’t cupping my bottom!

The best investment pieces are those you can wear in more than one way. A staple that serves double purpose not only comes with a great cost per wear, but it’s also so easy to switch up the look and feel without much effort. Use my easy style hack to stretch not only your creative muscles but also your closet and dollar!

Bonus TIP: try wearing shorter cardigans backwards as a shirt!

How to Wear a Lightweight Cardigan

Lightweight Cardigan

I am constantly stressing the importance of depth in an outfit and a lightweight cardigan is the perfect way to create a little depth during the transitional seasons.

One of my favorite ways to style a lightweight cardigan takes it’s cue from the 1950’s when “sweater blouses” were the bees knees. 1950’s, sweaters took center-stage in ladies’ fashion.  They were worn on the tighter side (but not skin-tight), which helped emphasize a lady’s figure. Paired with a fuller skirt and worn tucked in, this gave ladies the “fit n flare”, hourglass look that was synonymous with women’s fashion in the 50’s.

To give this style a modern twist try layering a super lightweight cardigan (Missoni is famous for these) over a tie-neck blouse and tuck it into your skirt. Remember the key is to create a nipped waistline and hourglass silhouette so adding a belt on top of your tucked cardigan will ensure everything looks perfectly placed.

This styling trick will help to keep you warm, is easy to take off if it gets too hot and adds the ultimate dash of runway meets retro to your look.
