Canvas shoes in the rain? Read on..

When it’s wet and rainy outside, it can be hard to find the right footwear. You want shoes that are waterproof, but you also want them to look stylish so that they don’t ruin your whole outfit.

Lately, I have been loving the ease and comfort of canvas sneakers with a dress.  It delivers a cool-girl chic vibe that I don’t want to sacrifice just because of a little rain or harsh weather.

For those of you that like to rock your Vans or Converse all year long I have a ridiculously easy way to waterproof your canvas shoes that is totally natural, uses no chemical nasties and requires nothing but beeswax, which you can easily find on Amazon, and a blow-dryer.

Most shoe-proofing sprays come with just about every warning label available, including “extreme danger,” “very flammable,” “poison” and that yield-sign-shaped explosive symbol. They usually contain bad PFOAs (the very bio-accumulative, environmentally persistent fluorochemicals they use to make Teflon) and are full of smog-inducing petroleum-based volatile organic compounds that seriously pollute the air. Worse yet their application method also tends to result in you taking in a lungful of fumes in the name of weatherproofing.

I have a stylist’s trick for waterproofing that is not only natural but also totally environmentally safe and produces zero harmful fumes.

Keep in mind once you “waterproof” your shoes they won’t “breathe” as much as they did before so come summer you may want to switch to another “non-water-proofed” pair, but this method will let you rock those canvas kicks even on a rainy wet day or for us here in Vegas, even in bar with a bunch of drink spillers.

What you need

  • Beeswax or Vegans can use Carnauba Wax (the brick/bar form is easiest to use)
  • Hairdryer
  • Canvas Shoes (Vans, converse, etc.)

How to:

  1. Take the laces out of your shoes.
  2. If the shoes are dirty, clean with a rag dabbed in 1 part vinegar, 1 part water and let dry.
  3. Using a strong amount of pressure, rub the beeswax all over your shoes. The wax should be visible on the shoes- don’t worry you won’t see it after you add the heat.
  4. Melt the layer of beeswax on your shoes with your hair dryer until you no longer see the beeswax.
  5. Repeat a few times (I usually do 3-4 passes)
  6. Done.

Its seriously that easy and unlike most of the chemical based waterproofing sprays you don’t have to wait 24 hours to wear your shoes, you can wear them in about 5 minutes!
