How to Wear Western with an Edge

How to wear western with an edge

This season designers are OBSESSED with the Wild Wild West Western aesthetic.

It’s EVERYWHERE!  Fringe, studs and revamped cowboy boots practically ruled the Fall 2018 runways.  For weeks and weeks…. and weeks I’ve been talking about how BIG the Western trend really is and some of the feedback I’ve been getting is mixed.  It’s either “I Love it, Yee-haw” or “I could never pull that off”.

This post is for the nay-sayers, the trend-a-phobic and the “what do I do with that”ers.

The biggest concept you need to embrace for this and really any season is that Trends are Fluid. I can’t express this enough.  Trends are meant to be combined and mixed.  You don’t have to go head to toe with just one trend.

You can take elements from the Western trend and incorporate it into your own personal style without going full Rhinestone Cowgirl.  You can do western with an edge or western with a side of office. The options are endless when you open your thought process up to the possibilities.

Unexpected combinations make for the most interesting looks!  Just when you thought you couldn’t wear a fitted “office appropriate” pencil skirt with cowboy boots, think again. Mixing up Western elements with other trends gives your look that stylized feel.

Just because it’s Western, doesn’t mean that you have to strictly adhere to cowgirl elements. A Western belt paired with a pleated maxi oozes Southwestern Boho style already but adding in brightly colored boots and a multi-tone top to the look screams modern and versatile.

One of the main staples of the Western trend is a pair of cowboy boots. This season designers have taken a gazillion modern approaches to this classic Americana footwear. From glitter boots to mixed textiles, knee-high to ankle there is a cowboy boot out there this season for everyone!

Create something county fair sweet with a flouncy dress and knee high cowboy boots or something a little more edgy with sparkly boots, a western bag and a moto-jacket.

It’s up to YOU!

Fall Trends: It’s a Wild Western Plaid Plaid World

Western and Plaid Fashion Trends

Get ready to hear two words from me over and over and over again this season, western and plaid.

These two predominant trends have crept their way into just about every other trend of Fall 2018 and are completely taking over.

The metallic trend has western inspired boots, the suiting trend is an explosion of plaid, the animal print trend has western whip stitching, the 90s grunge trend of course has plaid, and the floral trend has western silhouettes.  everything is coming up western and plaid this season… pl-estern? Pla-stern?

Well whatever you choose to call it plaid + western = fashion success this season.

The western and plaid fashion trends give you all the ingredients you need for an easy fall pairing with a boho sensibility. Try a yoke detailed plaid print blouse with a pair of boyfriend jeans, a pretty plaid prairie dress with a pair of metal tipped cowboy boots or a long tiered floral prairie skirt with a plaid ruffled top.  Denim is always a good choice to pair with this trend, make sure it has some good sun-faded texture, and you can never go wrong with a saddle bag by your side.   Experiment with mixing different sized western plaids that are in the same color range to create straight off the runway perfection.

Designer Spotlight- I want to start introducing you all to some new brands that I love but that you may not be familiar with starting with one of my favorites: DOEN. DOEN is a collective of creative Los Angeles based women who make elevated yet wearable pieces for the everyday. The line is inspired by vintage designs they offer flattering, easy silhouettes in luxe fabrics and approachable prices.  It is an amazing company who not only offers the chicest boho babe clothing around but also has a strong commitment to supporting women. At their launch EVERY single factory partnership they have is either women owned or co-owned.  To extent their commitment to closing the gender gap to the communities where their clothing is produced they partnered with ROOM TO READ.  each season they design a children’s style and donate 100% of those profits to benefit ROOM TO READ who’s mission is to promote literacy and gender equality.  ROOM TO READ works with communities and local governments across Asia and Africa to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children and supports girls to complete secondary school with the life skills they’ll need to succeed in school and beyond.
