The New Canadian Tuxedo

The New Canadian Tuxedo

The Canadian Tuxedo.  It lives in fashion infamy.

Also known as “denim on denim”, love it or hate it the look has popped up decade after decade from the streets of Milan to celebs like Kim Kardashian, Beyoncé and Miley Cyrus.

This season all things retro are the BIZ so of course that means denim in all it’s iterations but with a modern twist. The New Canadian Tuxedo.

On the runways we are seeing new ways to layer the utilitarian fabric by switching up silhouettes and adding contrasting materials. Printed denim and layering varied shades and colors of denim lead the way while softer approaches pair feminine pieces like denim skirts with the rough and ready fabric of a tough denim jacket or denim shirt.

When gathering your gear look for oversized 90’s inspired denim jackets, printed or logoed denim skirts, vintage inspired jeans aka straight leg, flared and boot-cut denim, chambray tops, denim coveralls and anything with color.

The key is to pair the denim so that the look has depth.  Even though you are wearing denim head to toe there should be little moments that let each piece shine individually while still being cohesive as a whole look. Don’t shy away from color or pattern- they are your BFF for creating a look that has interest.

Give the new denim on denim aka Canadian Tuxedo a try this season, I promise you’ll look nothing like early 2000s Britney and Justin.. unless you want to.

Fashion Facts-

The Term “Canadian Tuxedo” is a misnomer: It was an American, crooner Bing Crosby, who first donned the ensemble, wearing an actual denim tuxedo jacket that Levi Strauss made for him after he was denied entry from a Vancouver hotel with a strict dress code.

How to Wear Spring’s Spicy Hues Now

How to Wear Spring's Spicy Hues Now

This is the time of year that we in the fashion industry start to talk about “transition pieces”-  pieces that you can wear now and into Spring.

The idea is all about embracing the upcoming spring trends while staying warm and cozy during the winter months! Layer them up NOW for winter vibes with a coat, hat, scarf, tights and boots then wear the look again in another iteration when things warm up by ditching the layers and creating a new airy combination with open toe heels or sandals, a clutch and a statement necklace come spring.  Winter trend + Spring trend= Transition.  Wear it now, wear it later!

The easiest way to embrace Spring trends now is with color and luckily this Spring designers seem to have moved away from the typical pastels and toward earthy hues that work well in any season.

Spring 2019 will be dominated by warm, spicy and fiery shades. Lively hues that are a mix of bright reds and oranges.  According to Pantone “The mindset for Spring/Summer 2019 reflects our desire to face the future with empowering colors that provide confidence and spirit; colors that are uplifting; joyful hues that lend themselves to playful expressionism and take us down a path of creative and unexpected combinations”.

Challenge accepted Pantone!  I love a good spicy palette, that combined with artisanal flourishes like ruffled hems and billowing sleeves lend an artful aura to a look plus make layering oh so easy!

And, if you include a few more spring trends such as craft elements like patchwork, fringing, fabric bundles and woven textures to infuse your clothing with personality you’ll be two steps ahead in the trend game!

Three of my favorites from Pantone’s Spring Color Report are Jester Red, Fiesta and Terrarium Moss.  They are fiery, dynamic, look great on every skin tone, and give off a retro vibe plus they pair flawlessly.

Whether you are creating a look using texture for depth or mixing prints you can’t go wrong with these three epice shades as your muse to add a little spice to your wardrobe.
