How to Shop End of Season Sales

Hands up, who’s already spent half their pay check in the Zara sale going on at the moment?

Is it just me or does scoring a great piece for a ridiculously affordable price also make you feel weirdly victorious?

I love a good clothing score but it took me years to understand that scoring a great piece at a steal of a price didn’t have to be random. Did you know that you can track a store’s sale cycle so you always get the best price for whatever clothing and accessories you want.

Stores want to keep their shelves and racks filled, but they get new merchandise so frequently that eventually, items that aren’t selling must be put on clearance in order to move it out the door. This is when it’s your turn to score!

If you know exactly when an item will be on sale, you can decide whether you want to wait to buy it on the cheap, or (if you are so in love and scared it will sell out) if it’s worth the extra money to buy it beforehand.

One of the best times to get the most bang for your buck is to shop End of Season Sales.

Generally, stores overhaul their merchandise in line with the New York Fashion Weeks in September and February, so keep an eye out. You can get excellent deals on summer fashion by shopping in September, and you can snag winter fashion on the cheap in February.

The Zara End of Season Sale and the Nordstrom Half Yearly Sale/Anniversary Sale are probably the two biggest fashion “gets” of the year.

Zara is super secretive about ” exactly when” their end of season sale starts but summer sales begin around the end of June and winter sales start the end of December.  If you subscribe to their newsletter you will get a email giving you a heads-up a few days before the sale begins. Their sale work in tears.  The first week of the sale, they mark items down 10% to 25%. The second week, they price the sale at 40% or even 50%. During the third week, you can get items for up to 70% to 75% off because everything has to go. It’s better to wait two to three weeks for the best sale prices!

Nordstrom Half Yearly Sale happens December/January and the epic Anniversary Sale in July/August.  You can typically score current season pieces for up to 50% off during this sale bonanza!

Now WHAT to Buy.  Be savvy when shopping an End of Season Sale.  You don’t want to catch “sale fever” and end up with a closet full of things you bought just because they were a “steal” but that you will never wear! I mean come-on you just did a big closet edit right!  Only buy pieces you really love.  I think “is this piece special or just okay” before I commit.

Arm yourself with the upcoming trends and choose pieces accordingly. I know it’s hard to think about flowy summer dresses on a rainy cold January morning, but consider pieces that you will still be able to wear once the weather turns warm.  Just because cold shoulder tops were the bees knees last summer doesn’t mean they will be the hot thing again come Spring.  Stay in-the-know and do a little trend forecasting when shopping trendy pieces.

Look for “classic” or “evergreen” pieces.  Things that are timeless, that you can wear for many seasons to come and that will work no matter what the trends are like trench coats, little black dresses, etc.

Buying brands with resale value is always a good idea. Designer clothing retains value even after being worn, so consider investing in brand names like Gucci, Prada, Chanel, Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Hermès, and Dolce & Gabbana, which can be sold on consignment sites once you tire of them, like TheRealReal.com

Opt for pieces that will pair well with other pieces you already have in your closet.  Always picture the item working with other things you already own. If it’s going to be lonesome in your wardrobe, walk away.

Good luck and happy shopping!  I’ll be walking into sale season in this gorgeous floral print dress which I scored at the Zara sale for $30 last week!
