How to Remove Makeup from a Felt Hat

How to remove makeup from a felt hat

Hats are totally having a moment right now.  Not only are they one of the easiest ways to add dimension and color to your Fall wardrobe but they were also all over the Runways.

From Cloche’s to Fedoras, Rancher Hats to Boater Styles everyone from Christian Dior to Chanel and Saint Laurent topped their models off with chic chapeau’s.

The thing about a really good hat is that it is often an investment piece and you’ll want to make sure to learn how to care for it and make it last.

General care is pretty easy- store it upside down, lint roll it, brush it out- but there is one stubborn problem that continually pop’s up for us hat loving gals:  Makeup on the inside of the hat or hatband.

It’s totally gross looking and if you have to take your hat off around anyone it’s kinda embarrassing.

Don’t worry my sombrero sisters- I have a little stylist trick for magically removing makeup from your favorite felt hat in just FIVE easy steps with one of France’s skincare secret weapons: Micellar Water.

Micellar water is known for its stellar makeup-removing capabilities. A triple threat that cleanses, tones, and moisturizes via oil molecules that attach to and dissolve dirt, it works like a chic little boss to remove makeup stains. Although I would NOT recommend it for delicate fabrics like silk, it makes for the most magical potion when trying to remove makeup from the inside of your favorite Fedora.

STEP ONE:

Brush your hat with a fabric brush (you should be doing this after each use). Brush the hat using a counterclockwise motion, moving with the natural grain of the felt, pulling debris out and away.

STEP TWO:

Lint roll your hat to remove any stubborn surface fuzz the brush didn’t get.

STEP FIVE:

If possible turn the band out and let it dry.  If the band is fixed or if the hat has no band, just leave the hat upside down to dry.  If you used a cotton pad/ball you may need to lint roll again once dry.
