Layering Your Sleeves

What makes an outfit extra cool?  What is that “thing” that sets an uber chic look apart from a sea of off the rack looks?

Memorable outfits all have one thing in common, they have depth.  Depth is what makes a look “special”.  It’s what brings it to life.

Depth adds that perfect je nes se quoi to your outfit.  The idea is to combine different materials to provide contrast and balance.   It’s about paying attention to the fabric content (cotton, leather, silk) and to how an item feels.  It’s about balancing the hard and the soft.  Depth can even just be combining prints and pattern and details to create a visual interest to your outfit.

Through depth you can elevate even the simplest of outfits. One of the easiest ways to add depth is through layering your sleeves.  Yes that’s right, layering your sleeves.

Layering your sleeves may not have been on your radar before or perhaps you have done it all along and not even known you were doing it. This layering technique creates a chic subtle element that can change the whole vibe of the outfit and make it feel complete.

Playing with different sleeve lengths adds expert level layering flair to your outfit. Pair a shorter sleeved coat with a sweater, let  or roll up the sleeves and show off a different color or texture. This season I have been all about pairing long sleeved dresses with shakets and giving the shaket sleeve a J-Crew esc roll.

When mixing prints adding these “sleeve layers” really helps to balance the look.  Give it a try and watch your look go from everyday to straight from the runway.
