Acid Wash Denim

Acid Wash Denim

The denim world has been turned upside down by Gen Z’s call to cancel skinny jeans.

This call heard round the internet was first sung on TikTok. According to the Gen Z’ers, skinny jeans are OUT  (along with side parts) and we should swap them out for baggy jeans immediately, lest we appear lame. Or even worse…old.

Along with the cry for 90’s esc baggy jeans came a whole slew of retro denim demands. Which includes lighter washes, jogger jeans, balloon jeans, flare jeans and yes acid wash denim.

Acid wash denim the ’80s fashion trend made popular by an entire decade of pop stars and punks is making a comeback. Refined, soft, and sophisticated it’s created by adding chlorine and to the denim to achieve a lighter lived-in looking color.

This once DIY aging technique is now a full-on off the rack trend. From designer to fast-fashion everyone is jumping on the acid wash train.

My favorite way to incorporate it is with a denim jacket. It’s a great way to dip your toes in the trend without going total Girbaud.

If baggy jeans are scaring the crap out of you Acid Wash is a great way to stay on-trend without sacrificing your denim principles.

Now that we have agreed on acid wash, one more thing about skinny jeans..

..As we get older, it’s not about showing off skinny legs, or figure-hugging clothing,  feeling comfortable in our clothes and in ourselves is more important.

Skinny jeans are arguably the most wearable item of clothing to exist.  Most importantly they flatter every body, designers have also perfected their fits and they are available at just about every price point. Are there cooler jeans? Absolutely. Should we be willing to experiment and explore those options? Probably! But that doesn’t mean we need to completely ditch the comfort food of denim, the humble skinny jean.

Totally Unpinchable St. Patrick’s Day Style

St. Patrick's Day Style

Whether you’re a celebrate-every-holiday-to-the-max type of person or prefer to pretend holidays like Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day are just like any other day of the year, it’s fun to use these holidays as an excuse to wear something festive.

On March 17 get ready to step out your door into a virtual Emerald City, where donuts are topped with green icing and adorned with rainbows, drinks are mixed with green food coloring and suddenly- at least for the day- everyone is Irish.

Since childhood we have been groomed to wear GREEN on St. Patrick’s Day or else.. duh duh duh.. get pinched.

Unsolicited pinches were the stuff my childhood nightmares were made of.  Of course I always tried to sell the fact that my eyes were green so technically I was always wearing green but the ready-to-pinch grade-school boys never bought that which resulted in every St. Patrick’s Day becoming a day filled with as much childhood anxiety for me as “Friday Flip-up Day”.

Fast forward to adulting where, needless to say, come St. Patrick’s Day I don my best green’s and do my full Celtic redhead duty of wearing a totally unpinchable emsemble.

St. Patrick’s Day style doesn’t mean you have to gear up like a leprechaun, instead, why not opt for something a bit more, evergreen? Festive but subtle and totally unpinchable.

The key to wearing green for St. Patrick’s Day is to mix it with varying green hues to give your look depth.  Depth and texture always equal style.

There are so many chic pieces in varying shades of green this season—from olive sweaters and kelly green dresses to shamrock skirts, tartan jackets and emerald printed maxi dresses.  Use the full color range of vert hues to create a look using green that you could wear not just on St. Patrick’s Day but any day and then add a small understated piece that gives you “The Luck o’ the Irish“.  A lucky coin necklace, charm bracelet or (in my case) shamrock sneakers.

Your St. Patrick’s Day look will be so legit that when Chad from accounting heads towards you with his pinchy little paws he’ll take one look and have to walk away pinch defeated.  In your face Chad!

Slainte my Friends!

What is Gorpcore?

What is gorpcore

You may have heard the term thrown around in fashion circles, seen it in print but skimmed over it or thought WTF is that but Gorpcore is a “Thing” and it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Gorpcore is the new Normcore, only equipped for the outdoors. Sure, normcore got us into mom jeans, nondescript sweatshirts, and tennis sneakers. But lately, “Good Ol’ Raisins and Peanuts” (yes, that’s what GORP stands for- named after the trail-mix used by hikers) fashion has been running wild with its own spin on “normal.”

Outdoor gear is officially in.

It’s all about utility and function. ‘Mountain chic’, ‘camping glam’ and ‘ugly pretty’ might be some of the words used to describe the look which mixes in practicality with designer labels, current shapes and runway-worthy silhouettes.

Think a high low mix with the high being something like a Balenciaga Anorak jacket and the low being a pair of Tevas.

Windbreakers, hiking boots, and recycled-polyester fleece. Basically, anything Patagonia, the North Face, Teva, Columbia, and Birkenstock paired with painter pants, Vans, Hawaiian shirts, and Dickies because head-to-toe outdoorwear would be too literal. Fanny Packs can thank Gorpcore for their recent  comeback and so can cargo pants.

Gorpcore’s main idea is that the unfashionable can be fashionable—if you wear it right.

Here’s a peek at some perfectly GORPCORE looks from Fenty x Puma to get you in the mood for a shopping spree at REI.

How to Wear Stripes Like a Boss

Stripes Trend Spring 2018

So you may have heard, Stripes are hot for Spring 2018.

Designers painted the runways with big, bold stripes from vertical to horizontal, broad banned and pencil thin, vibrant, bold and colorful in everything from dual tones to the full rainbow stripes are EVERYWHERE this season.

The word “stripes” somehow instantly strikes fear into the hearts of every gal.  We were taught from an early age that stripes make you look bigger- and no one wants that so most people avoid them all together.

I’m here to tell you to throw out those outdated fashion rules.  It’s ok to wear stripes- they just have to be the RIGHT type of stripes.  I know it’s scary but I’m here to help.

There are a few tricks you can use to wear stripes and rock them like a boss, here is how.

The key with stripes (as with any other trend) is to choose a silhouette that flatters your frame and brings focus to your physical pluses rather than drawing attention to the parts of your body that you would rather camouflage. So you don’t have the most “runway” type frame, well neither do I but you can still wear stripes! I rock my stripes in a silhouette with a fitted waist and full skirt, a tried and true silhouette for me.

If you wear stripes vertically they can be slimming and even appear to add a few inches to your height. Horizontal stripes strategically placed at your bust and hips can create an optical illusion of a smaller waist. Wider stripes tend to add a bit of width so they are perfect for creating the illusion of a larger bust or to create the illusion of curves on boyish figures.

Stripes of varying sizes can help create curves where you may not have them while still flattering your natural figure and smaller stripes can create a narrowing illusion.

Try mixing and matching your stripes (yes, you can wear stripes of different sizes and colors in the same outfit!), go head to toe or just use them as an accent.  The fun of fashion is experimenting!

Still hearing your mother’s warnings echoing in your ears?  Stripes still too scary?  Try adding stripes in baby steps.  Start by adding them with accessories like shoes and handbags! With a little practice you’ll be painting the town striped in no time!
