Summer Solstice Honey Yellow

This past weekend we celebrated the Summer Solstice which marks the beginning of summer and the longest day of the year.

Early dawns. Long days. Late sunsets. Short nights. The sun at its height each day, as it crosses the sky. Meanwhile, south of the equator, winter begins.

To celebrate this official celestial start of summer I spent the day outside, planting in my garden, dipping my toes in the pool and enjoying honey cake (recipe at end of post).

Honey Cake has a long tradition with the Summer Solstice- in ancient times people would leave honey cakes in the garden on the night of Midsummer’s Eve to delight the woodland spirits and faeries.  What better way to embody summer than with sunny, golden, straight from nature honey!

The only sweetener in Honey Cakes is well.. honey so they aren’t too sweet which makes pairing them with fresh fruit really easy. I also recommend adding a couple scoops of non-dairy ice cream!

I was so inspired by the season that I wanted to create a honey toned monochromatic look.

You might be thinking “Wait a minute Christie, isn’t a monochromatic look all ONE shade of color?”  Well, yes and no.

The term “monochromatic” is composed of two words: “mono” meaning single and “chromatic” meaning color. So a monochromatic outfit would consist of pieces of one color. This doesn’t just mean wearing one hue head to toe it also means wearing different shades and tints of the same color.

To create the perfect monochromatic look, make sure you mix textures and fabrics within your monochromatic outfit! You want to add visual interest, depth, and dimension to your look so it’s not one-dimensional or boring.  This includes shoes and handbags- they both play a part in adding texture to your outfit.

Monochromatic outfits don’t have to be made up of just solid pieces either; you can (and should) incorporate patterns or prints.

Let’s exercise your styling muscles!  This week I want you to create a “sunny” or “nature inspired” monochromatic look.  Something bright and happy!  Tag me on Instagram- I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Happy Solstice- don’t forget to scroll down for my Honey Cake recipe.

What I Would Have Worn to Disneyland

This time every year my entire family takes an annual trip to Disneyland.  We have been doing it as long as I can remember. The summer of 2020 will be the first time we miss it.

I have so many amazing memories from these trips. We take it very seriously, plan out our route to every ride and it’s timing on the app, secure our fast passes and map out every food stop.  We arrive as the gates open to the park and then close it out with the fireworks at the end of the night.  One huge totally Disney packed day filled with laughs, photos, rides, memories, sometimes a lost phone or one of the kids (or husbands) has a tantrum, churros and of course Dole Whips.

For those of you that may not know what a Dole Whip is you need to get with the program..  located on the Jungle River shores in Adventureland right outside The Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland Park is the Dole Whip stand- recently the park has expanded the area and built The Tropical Hideaway next door which hosts a bevy of extraordinary worldly eats. Menu items include chilled ramen salad, warm steamed bao buns, Sweet Pineapple Lumpia and the iconic Dole Whip. It’s a must-do when charting out your food stops.

The magical Dole Whip is a dairy free (yay) ice cream type pineapple delight served in a soft serve style swirl. When I think of Disneyland food Dole Whip’s and Churros are the creme de la creme of park culinary delights!

A few weeks ago Disneyland shared their Official Dole Whip recipe through their Disneyland app (which I am sharing at the end of the post) and I have been blending those babies up ever since.

It’s a little dose of Disney magic right in your own home.

Everything Disney makes me happy, so this week I decided to dress up for Disneyland anyway and share what I would have worn #WIWHW (is that a thing now?) to Disneyland this year.

I have to say, it totally boosted my mood! If you are a Disneyland aficionado like me I highly recommend donning your Disney best this week for an instant “Spoon Full of Sugar” to your day!
