Escape to the Tropics with these Rom Com’s

Summer temps have finally hit and it’s gettin’ hot out here.

These are the days make me yearn for a tropical island, palm trees swaying, sand under my feet and the smell of salt water in the air but sadly, I don’t think that’s in the cards for most of us any time soon.

The pandemic has put a serious kibosh on most summer beach plans. To quench my thirst for the topics I’m going escape with a little help from Hollywood.

It’s time to don some tropical prints, mix up a cold crisp cocktail (I have a recipe for you at the end of post) and pop on some “make you feel like you are on vacation flicks”.

Filmmakers have used dreamy, remote islands around the world to set the scene for some of the best easy-breezy ‘watch them over and over’ rom-com films. Today I’m sharing my top FIVE.

Escape whatever you need to escape for a few hours with these summer movies that will transport you to a different world—from a trip to the Caribbean with Mathew McConaughey  and Kate Hudson to the dreamy Hawaiian Islands with Jennifer Anniston and Adam Sandler or Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler. You can just sit back and take in the gorgeous views, skip the sunscreen and have a few laughs.

Escape to the Tropics with these Rom Com’s

  1. Forgetting Sarah Marshall- Hawaii is paradise—until your famous ex shows up with her new boyfriend. Jason Segel is at his funniest and most adorable in this endlessly quotable romantic comedy.
  2. Fools Gold- Clear blue waters, treasure hunting and a rekindling of romance- Alright, alright, alright!
  3. 50 First Dates- The easy chemistry of Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler makes this one a classic- with a kind of ironic spin on Groundhog’s Day he’s forced to win her over every single day because she’s can’t ever remember last night’s date!
  4. Just Go With It- Adam Sandler love Hawaii.  In this flick Sandler plays a recently heartbroken broken, plastic surgeon Danny Maccabee who pretends to be married so he can enjoy future dates with no strings attached. His web of lies works, but when he meets Palmer (Brooklyn Decker) — the gal of his dreams — she resists involvement. Instead of coming clean, Danny enlists Katherine (Jennifer Aniston), his assistant, to pose as his soon-to-be-ex-wife. Hilarity insues.
  5. The Wrong Missy- This is a new one (just dropped on NETFLIX)- produced by Adam Sandler’s production company (I told you he loves Hawaii). It may not be for everyone but it’s great for an easy bunch of slapstick laughs. David Spade invites his dream girl to an island resort — but a previous really bad blind date with the same name shows up instead.

What are some of your favorite whisk you away summer movies?

Animal Print Trend: It’s a Jungle Out There

Animal Print Trend

I’ve been talking, posting and writing non-stop about how hot hawaiian and tropical prints are for SS18 but have I mentioned that for Pre-Fall and Fall 2018 animal prints will be leading the pack?

The animal print trend game is strong this Fall.  The shows were packed with animal prints, from Dior to Herrera, Stella McCartney to Saint Laurent. Designers took inspiration from the notebooks of zoologists incorporating the ENTIRE animal kingdom into their designs everything from Leopard to Zebra, exotic tigers and even snakes.

I know, I know… you are wondering why I am talking about Fall when it’s a 113 degrees outside but in order to make smart clothing purchases now you have to look a season ahead, which is precisely why I became instantly starry eyed when I saw this dress.

It was totally love at first fashion sight.  Picture a rom-com montage of me and this dress laughing, sipping cocktails, walking hand in hand on the beach and riding off into the sunset together.

Yeah it was that and here’s why….first, it has a tropical print so it’s hot NOW and second it has an animal print so it will be hot LATER PLUS it has 3/4 sleeves (I told you all about why I love these HERE) and it’s a shirt dress, which is one of my favorite silhouettes.

Wear it now for summer with sandals and wear it for fall with boots, a leopard or zebra coat and a fun animal print bag.

Yaas! Oh Yaas!

The animal print trend fits in so flawlessly with the tropical print trend that there is really no reason to wait until Fall to start rockin’ it.

Incorporate animal prints into your summer wardrobe by pairing leopard with palm prints or zebra with tropical florals.

A Hawaiian print button down shirt becomes oh so tropical chic when paired with a sleek leopard print pencil skirt or if you just want to take your animal prints as a garish on your tropical drink of a look try mixing in a fun parrot print clutch or tiger striped earrings.

How to Feel Tropical Even When It’s Not

Tropical Print Trend

The warmer the weather gets the more my mind keeps drifting away to thoughts of sunsets over the water, pina coladas, sandy beaches and all things tropical but an islandy getaway isn’t in the cards for me anytime soon.

I live in the desert. It’s hot, there are catci and not a beach to be found BUT that’s no reason I can’t be in a tropical state of mind, or style right?!

If there is ONE must-try print for summer 2018 it’s got to be tropical.

Super versatile and oh so summery the tropical print trend come in a variety of forms from sunset landscapes to quirky parrots, luxe palm leaves, exotic fruits and tropical flowers.  There is a little something for everyone.

Get creative and go head to toe with it channeling the sun-drenched style of a 1960s Palm Springs socialite. Go full on “Magnum P.I.” with a vibrant Hawaiian print shirt or a bit more subtle with a red carpet worthy chic palm leaf print gown.  Dress it up or dress it down wear it for day or night but whichever way you choose to rock it set your dial to tropical and then take it up a notch or two or three.

Not sure how to ride the wave?  I put together my list of 5 things you need to keep you on-trend and get you in a tropical state of mind this summer no matter where you are.

  • A bold tropical print- tropical prints are not only a HUGE trend this season but a necessity to achieve a tropical vibe.  Choose bold vibrant flora and fauna prints with a tropical nod and make sure there are pops of color that include at least one of this seasons hot colors: lavender, orange or yellow.
  • A bamboo handle bag.  Last summer it was all about those Cult Gaia wooden bags you know them they were EVERYWHERE on INSTAGRAM.  This season the trend has evolved into something a little more luxe, the bamboo handle bag.  Whether it’s a leather bag, straw, canvas or even acrylic make sure it has a bamboo handle.
  • Slides- one of the most controversial yet wearable and comfy trends around these shoes are hotter than hot this season.  They are no longer limited to rubbery, sporty soles or Burkenstock-esc orthopedic styles now slides are seriously high-fashion and adorned with everything from feathers to florals and metal details.
  • NARS Body Glow- to me it just isn’t summer without slathering myself in this decadent skin transforming body oil from NARS.   This is the product that just about EVERY beauty brand has tried (and failed) to copy.  It is a lightweight blend of hydrating essences with Tiate flower steeped in native coconut oil which gives skin a bronzed, radiant glow and smells incredible. Apply Body Glow immediately after showering for maximum hydrating benefits. Allow a few minutes for the product to absorb into the skin before getting dressed.
  • CREED Virgin Island Water an instant tropical boost this uplifting scent radiates Jamaican lime and coconut perfect for a dose of tropical paradise.

Tropical Tunes: If reggae music is your summertime jam be sure to check out the new album Punk Rocksteady from the Mad Caddies which drops on June 15th. The album features 12 classic punk songs (standards from the likes of Green Day, Bad ReligionThe Misfits, and Descendents), hand-picked by Fat Mike from NOFX, completely reimagined with a reggae strut!

5 Things to help you feel tropical even when it's not

Bold Tropical Print Trend

Bold Tropical Print Trend

Tropical prints are taking over this summer in a bold explosion of color and a lush mix of flora and fauna.

Women want to look and feel sexy and feminine while having fun in the sun.  We want color and daring but in the most effortless way possible. This is what the bold tropical print trend is all about.

Not only does it remind you of an exotic getaway, tropical prints also add instant style and fun to even the simplest outfits.

Go head-to-toe tropical in a dress, romper or jumper or scale it back by wearing just one tropical print piece paired with a neutral. If you’re feeling bold, experiment with mixing tropical prints with other prints. Fruits, vegetables, floral, animal prints and stripes all look amazing against a tropical pattern.  If you’re hoping to find a more subtle way to incorporate the look into your current wardrobe, add a pop of print with patterned shoes or accessories — anything goes with this wild trend!
