Floor capes billowing in the wind, short capes draped over shoulders and flouncy capes adding a hint of fairy-tale glamour. Capes add mystique and a certain undeniable je nes se quois to every outfit, whether you’re just keeping warm or adding it as a statement piece it’s easy to see why the cape trend has captured designers hearts and stormed the runways this season!
Sweeping and dramatic, a cape affords its wearer ultra chic runway status without the hassle of “shrobing” (balancing your coat on your shoulders without putting your arms in the sleeves).
This seriously luxurious outerwear option was EVERYWHERE on the F/W18 runways at Dior there were shearling capes paired with mini skirts, at Saint Laurent bewitching and sophisticated black-out thick capes added a lustrous addition and most memorable of all, at Burberry supermodel Cara Delevingne took over the runway in a floor-length cape made from rainbow fur and lined with the brand’s infamous check motif.
Cape-wearing success -as with anything else- is often down to how you style it, so if you’ve got a cape that fits more like a blazer, then pair it with jeans to ensure you’re smart but don’t feel dramatically overdressed. Contrast a fancy, full-length cape with distressed hem jeans. Longer, flowy styles make the perfect counterpoint to mini skirts and tall boots.
If you want to make a swooping, dramatic entrance try a traditional structured lady-like cape (like the one I’m wearing) worn atop a black lace flouncy dress. A cape is an instant way to style supercharge your LBD.
Style Tip: When you wear a cape make sure to leave the shoulder bag at home and opt for a clutch or a top handle bag. You will find it incredible difficult to wear a bag on your shoulder with a cape- it will just keep slipping off!
