Trend Alert Sherpa Coats

Sherpa Coats

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been OBSESSED with funky and fun coats and jackets. Shockingly, I probably own more jackets than I do shoes or bags- so if there is a coat trend I am most definitely on top of it.

It’s no secret that over the past few seasons fashion designers and street-stylers have been coveting utilitarian details.  The Gorpcore trend has brought us utility pockets, chore coats, splash jackets,  and for F/W 19-20 Shearling and Sherpa Coats.

This recent Sherpa craze started in London on the F/W19-20 runway with Burberry where Riccardo Tisci’s shearling/sherpa aviator jacket was the most talked about piece of the season.

It makes sense that the fashion scene would fall in love with the sherpa coat trend- I mean it is one of the coziest and softest fabrics around.  It provides warmth, softness and a touch of luxury.

I’ve slowly started to hoard shearling and sherpa pieces (and the faux variety) over the last year. They give off an easy rancher retro vibe that is effortlessly chic.  They can be both edgy and boho- in the immortal words of Donny and Marie “a little bit country and a little bit rock  ‘n roll“.

My most recent sherpa addition is this Madewell cocoon denim coat. Snagged off the clearance rack last summer I have been counting the days until the temps dropped and I could wear it!

The trend is truly for everybody- seriously ANYONE can wear it. You can go full fluffy with a jacket that showcases your sherpa-love on the oustide not just as lining or slowly dip your toes in the trend with shaggy collars and cuffs adorning denim and leather. Short or long, oversized paired with denim or fitted embellishing leather adding a that sherpa touch to your wardrobe is a MUST season. It will keep you feeling toasty and looking chic.

The SLP Aesthetic: A Little Bit Bougie and a Little Bit Rock ‘n’ Roll

The SLP Aesthetic

Over the past few seasons there has been a growing movement in the street-wear scene dubbed the SLP Aesthetic.

The SLP Aesthetic (Saint Laurent Paris Aesthetic) is a mash-up of chic Parisian flair infused with rock ‘n’ roll edge. The style was popularized by Hedi Slimane for Saint Laurent – and pays homage to the style he created while there – today the look is less defined by the namesake fashion label and more by a select few wardrobe essentials.

It’s pretty much the new Rock ‘n’ Roll Chic and is defined by a dark color palette with pops of vibrant color or graphics to make a statement.  The term “SLP Aesthetic” is usually tossed around when describing menswear looks but I think it totally translates to womenswear as well.

What I find REALLY interesting about the trend is that rockin’ the SLP Aesthetic isn’t about ACTUALLY wearing Saint Laurent (all of us can’t afford to be clad in Saint Laurent head to toe)– it’s about taking the “spirit” of Slimane’s Saint Laurent and translating it into an affordable chic capsule wardrobe. To be clear, I’m not talking about dupes (which I am adamantly opposed to) I mean to find pieces that are within your budget and celebrate the SLP style- not EXACT replicas of Saint Laurent pieces.

Sound like a challenge you are up for?  Let’s get started!

When you break it down rockin’ the SLP Aesthetic is pretty dang easy, it’s really about FOUR key pieces: Shoes, Top, Bottom and Jacket.

The Shoes and Jacket are the key pieces to the look so if you are going to make any investment purchases it should be those.

STEP ONE: The SHOES. The most obvious choice here would be a Chelsea boot but western-inspired boots and creepers are also fair game (COACH has some AMAZING Creeper-esc Western boots this season).

STEP TWO: The TOP. Striped tees and sweaters contribute to a very Parisian/French look, but most monochromatic tees and knits work too. Oversized flannel shirts and crazy silky printed shirts such as Hawaiian, paisley and even animal prints are all fair game.

STEP THREE: The BOTTOM. Skinny Jeans are the go-to for guys wanting to achieve the SLP Aesthetic and of course those work for the ladies as well but when translating this look for gals you have some freedom here- I suggest a retro circle skirt, leather pants, a cropped tuxedo pant or a leather pencil skirt.

STEP FOUR: The Leather Jacket.  Aside from the shoes this is the most critical thing to get right. You need a leather jacket that looks luxe and has some personality.  It could be studded, fur lined, have a western yolk or any details that make it “special”.

Follow the formula and then make it your own with a few personal style pieces like a bandanna print scarf, an edgy bag and colorful tights.

Fall Trend: Denim Skirts

Denim Skirt trend

If there’s one thing that will 100% never go out of style, it’s denim.

Denim is a timeless staple and you’d be hard-pressed to find a designer who didn’t include denim somewhere in their fall collection. Taking center stage for Fall 2019 is one of my favorite denim iterations: the denim skirt.

From prairie silhouettes to fitted pencil skirts, retro A-lines and button-front mini’s denim skirts are set to have a HUGE presence this season.

Designer’s have been having a love affair with the ’90s the past few seasons and Fall 2019 is no different. Get ready for an onset of deliciously vintage denim styles this fall. Think lived-in denim skirts with a ’90s vibe. Printed floral denim, high slit denim skirts, two tone denim, double denim (denim on denim looks) and logo laden denim.

With so many denim skirt choices out there it makes it super easy to rock this trend no matter what your age or body shape! Dress them up or dress them down- you’ll be amazed at how versatile this classic is.  Pair a denim pencil skirt with a sparkly blouse and heels for a night out, rock a denim mini with a loose easy band tee and boots for a cool model-off-duty vibe or pair a denim prairie skirt with a scarf print blouse and western belt for an easy boho feel.  The options are endless.

My advice when shopping the denim skirt trend is to look for pieces that not only have a great fit but are also “special” or unique. Make sure your denim skirt stands out from crowd with fun details like printed denim, coated denim, colored denim, patchwork details, embroidery, fringed hems, ombre effects, side stripes and slit fronts.
