The weather is finally cooling down, the leaves are slowing starting to change and being a lover of Fall fashion, I’m always on the hunt for a new cozy layer.
One of my favorite ways to layer during that in-between season is with a Sweater Coat.
Sweater Coats offer the ultimate balance between the warmth and structure of a coat combined with the coziness and ease of a sweater. They are great for those cool days/nights when you don’t need a winter coat, but a cardigan is just the right amount of warmth. It’s like being wrapped up in a blanket and who doesn’t love that?!
Ok so what exactly is it? A sweater coat is an oversized cardigan style jacket, usually made in a longer length and can be crafted from knits, wool or boucle. It doesn’t have to actually be a “sweater”.
Totally versatile they are perfect for upping the chic factor of a casual look like jeans and a tee and the most welcomed of layering pieces when your look needs a little something extra plus they are totally cozy.
Whether you like a streamlined and fitted look or prefer something loose and easy, there’s a sweater coat out there for every style personality.

One secret every stylist knows is that color, texture and shine are the keys to giving your look depth.
When an outfit feels flat or that it’s “missing something”, try incorporating accessories, layering pieces and shoes that add color, texture or shine. This will give your outfit depth, which makes it look more interesting, eye-catching and “special”.
Texture is all about combining different materials that will create contrast and balance. It’s about paying attention to the fabric’s details. It’s about balancing the hard and the soft. Remember that opposites attract and beauty can be found in the contrast! Smooth with rough, leather with lace. It can be as simple as combining prints or layering different types of fabrics to compliment each other.
Color can be anything from adding a POP of color or skillfully pairing multiple shades in the same color family. For Fall I love to play with a warm earthy pallet like rusts, burgundies, forest greens, golds and browns. The colors look lux and give off some serious Fall Vibes!
Shine doesn’t have to be full on disco ball. It could be adding a glossy lipstick, pairing a metallic accented shoe, shiny beaded details and/or layering in a shimmery jacket.
Once you start experimenting with color, texture and shine you’ll see how easy it is!
I swear you will get more compliments than ever before on your look. Pieces you have worn a million times and were tired of will be reinvented and have new life!
Stylist’s Tip: Fishnets are hot again and one of the easiest ways to add in more texture! Try rockin’ this classic leg wear to add a bit of edge to an otherwise ladylike look.
Deal Alert:I scored this brocade bootie for $25 at TJ Maxx this week and saw it at DSW for $139.99 the next day. If you are looking for fun booties at a great price head to TJ Maxx they have a crazy good selection right now!
Fashion eyewear leader Tura has teamed up with celebrity stylist Kate Young to create a collection that exudes an effortlessly cool retro vibe.
While designing the collection Young focused on sunglasses and eyeglasses that she herself would want to wear while scouring vintage stores all over the world for inspiration. The resulting collection (Young’s third with Tura), includes cat-eye, round and square styles in both sunglasses and opticals plus a childrens collection of which a portion of proceeds go to the Child Mind Institute, a non-profit that works to improve children’s mental healthcare.
“This Collection continues to pair vintage references with updated silhouettes to create a unique, memorable look that will withstand the test of time”, states Young ” I want her to feel glamorous even on the most casual of days, and I think this Collection achieves just that”.
I’ve been writing about Fall Fashion trends for the past few months so you already know that 60s and 70s inspiration are HUGE for Fall 2017. Every single style from this fantastic collaboration pairs perfectly with Fall’s fascination with all things retro.
I am super impressed with the smart thoughtful details throughout the collection such as metal tips on the frames and easy cat eye lift that gives the classic wayfarer-esc silhouette new life.
There are SO many must-haves in this collection, it’s going to be tough to narrow it down to just one, but then again who says you have to?
Designers brought out the Heavy Metal for the Fall 2017 shows.
Metallics were present in everything from bedazzled retro disco-ball boots at Saint Laurent to futuristic space-girl ensembles at Chanel and Miu Miu making the message clear, Fall 2017 is the Time to Shine!
As is often the case, runway looks don’t exactly translate easily to street looks. If you’re not ready to go full mylar balloon jumpsuit a la Comme des Garcons (and lets face it who is) then opt for pops of silver as opposed to blinging it out head-to-toe.
My advise is to play with metallic accents before you go full-on astronaut with the metallic trend.
A silver bag or glittery boots are a safe way to guild your look this season. Try pairing a fun metallic jacket or bag with a basic tee and jeans then work your way up to incorporating more bold statement making metallic pieces.
Silver will liven up the simplest of outfits or will work as a neutral when paired with loud prints or bold primary colors. Just be careful to make sure your metallic pieces look luxe and not cheap. Faux silver leather and some fast fashion liquid silver pieces can look tacky rather than trendy.
Any moment now the big fat delicious September issues of your favorite fashion magazines will land in your mailbox packed full of Fall Fashion goodness.
Time to get those pens ready and take note of What’s in, What’s Out and What you need to get your hands on NOW!
As a Fashion stylist I am always working a season ahead (right now I’m looking at trends and planning shoots for Resort 2018) so its pretty fair to say that I know my way around Fall 2017’s must-haves (I have been working with them since June).
To get you up to Fall Fashion speed and in the fashion-know I focused this weeks Outfit of the Day on three of my favorite Fall 2017 trends: moody florals, high necklines and boxy silhouettes.
Moody Florals are not only an absolute must-have for fall they are also the most seamless way to transition between seasons. Your fresh, light springy floral prints turn darker and more opulent for fall. Think bouquets of burnt orange, caramel, toffee, burgundy, oxblood, brown, deep blues and rich purples.
The perfectly moody fall floral I’m wearing was actually once a dress that I scored on the clearance rack at Neiman Marcus Last Call for $25. I loved the top of the dress but not the bottom- it was way too short for me- so I had my tailor transform it into this oh-so-on-trend high neck blouse!
High Necklines. For Fall 2017 The Victorian Era reigned the runways. Loads of lace, ruffles, and high necklines cascaded down the catwalks of the most notable designers. Expect to see regal high necklines all season long. The good news about this trend is that its super chic, perfectly romantic and incredibly flattering.
Boxy Silhouettes are everything this season. Designers got Utilitarian with workwear-inspired boxy shapes in everything from denim to boiler suits, suiting, layering pieces and topcoats.
This beautiful boxy Longchamp jacket was my score of the summer. I was combing through the depths of the Nordstrom Rack Clearance section and stumbled upon it for $100!
But it gets even better. It was a clear the rack day so I got another 25% off the $100!
Yaas oh yaas.
Stylist Tip:Remember that trends are meant to mix and match. I used THREE trends to create this chic fall day look. You don’t have to go head to toe Victorian or over the top with boxy on top and bottom. Let the trends be fluid, use them to inspire you to create something new.
