Southwestern Vibes

Southwestern Vibes

The American Southwest has inspired artists and musicians for decades so is it really any surprise that the fashion industry has picked up the mantle and incorporated the unmistakable earthy boho style into their SS19 runways?

Iconic fashion houses and buzzworthy newcomers alike sent models down the S/S 19 runways clad in pieces that seemed straight out of a Georiga O’Keefe painting.

Ralph Lauren Collection’s 50th-anniversary event featured interwoven fringed knits cinched at the waist with concha belts. Coach 1941 included patchwork denim dresses accessorized with sand-colored suede booties. And of-the-moment label Brock Collection showed ruffled full-skirted separates in sunset hues.

The key to embracing those Southwestern Vibes is to choose pieces in a palette that is inspired by desert hues. That means, earthy and neutral hues- colors like caramel, terracotta, rust, clay, and layer them with lighter earthy colors such as sand, taupe and beige.

Dusty pink highlights work great together with the desert palette and you can add more interest to the palette with some pops of teal, purple, cyan blue, and turquoise, inspired also by natural elements of the landscapes such as sky and stones.

Include iconic Southwestern elements such as Navajo prints, western boots, serape weaving, macrame accents, embroidery, denim, cactus motifs, turquoise jewels and of course fringe!

It’s all about embracing the traveler, dreamer, wanderer aesthetic and balancing that within your own personal style whether that be minimalist, maximalist, edgy or feminine.

How To Wear Tie Dye Without Looking Like a Hippie

How To Wear Tie Dye Without Looking Like a Hippie

Usually this is the time of year when I am writing about pastels and floral prints, not this season, S/S 2019 is all about Tie-Dye.

The words Tie-Dye occupy a very specific space. When you hear them you immediately think hippies and The Grateful Dead- neither of which are my jam so needless to say when I first heard that this was going to be a major thing for Spring I was less than excited.

In fact I think I made a yuck face. Okay I KNOW I made a yuck face,  BUT after viewing the S/S runways shows I realized that this season’s tie-dye has been elevated and refined, it’s definitely not the tie-dye of yesteryear.

From the dark dreamy tie-dyes at Christian Dior to the remade classic navy/white dyed combos at Michael Kors and the sporty street-style luxe sweatshirts at Proenza Schouler, this runway tie-dye resurgence looks a lot different than how you might remember it from the last PHISH concert you attended.

Forget everything you know about tie-dye, this season designers have translated the psychedelic print into a bold graphic to stand out against neutrals. It’s more of a refined print than a crazy explosion of color.

The result is a trend that feels clean but organic, bohemian but tailored, nostalgic but contemporary. A breath of fresh non-patchouli ridden air.

The key to incorporating it into you look is to choose silhouettes that merge with your personal style.  A circle skirt and band tee, an easy slip dress or mono-chrome tie-dyed jeans are the perfect starting point.

The Three Must Have S’s of Spring: Shields, Sneakers and Spray Jackets

The Three Must Have S's of Spring: Shields, Sneakers and Spray Jackets

Every season there’s a new batch of silhouettes, patterns, and “It” pieces plucked right from the runway that define the major trends of the moment.

But the truth is, it’s really not possible (or financially responsible) to COMPLETELY overhaul the contents of your closet every season to keep up with the latest trends.

My secret for staying in the fashion-forward game is to update my look seasonally with accessories.  Use key closet staples as your foundation and build on them with accessories.

Accessories can make a look cutting-edge, without undergoing a multi-garment, head-to-toe revamp.

Many times people write off accessories as after-thoughts that don’t really matter but remember although they are tiny they are mighty!  Their transformative powers are HUGE, while their level of commitment is rather low.  A $5 belt can totally change the silhouette of a dress or jacket into something so much more chic.  A quick accessory update can help a piece transcend seasons and give it new life.

Spring 2019 serves up three sporty accessory trends that will work magic on updating your wardrobe and give it a totally fresh on trend feel.

The Three Must Have S’s of Spring: Shields, Sneakers and Spray Jackets.

ONE: Shields

From futuristic to sporty to feminine, shields are becoming designers’ new blank canvas…and an accessory to watch, own and experiment with.  From uber sporty biker-esc shades to futuristic mirrored goggles, super-oversized to sleek and aerodynamic, colorful mirrored lenses and only a top frame Spring 2019 is the time to keep your sunnies game in the athleisure realm. Bonus: They actually provide MORE sun protection than regular sunnies because they cover more if your face!

TWO: Sneakers

Chunky multi-colored dad sneakers have evolved from a fashion forward choice to the wardrobe must-have for everyone. The main feature of dad sneakers is the chunky soles, which add just the right amount of height and still look sporty chic.  I love to make the unexpected pairing of chunky sneakers with a dress or skirt to keep them visually interesting and refreshingly new.

Three: Spray Jackets

The GORP-core trend has been a heavy fashion influence over the past few seasons and Spring 2019 is no different.  Utility and practicality continue to lead the way.  Spring = rain showers so why not opt for a lightweight waterproof jacket which comes equipped with a hood!  Spray Jackets are the perfect airy layering piece that combines fashion and function in a flattering silhouette plus it will totally keep you dry!

Not Your Average Animal Prints

Spring 2019 Animal Print Trend

Zebra, leopard, cheetah, tiger, snake… these predators of the wild have been creeping, sneaking and slithering their way through the fashion trends for the past few seasons but for Spring 2019 they will stalk your closet in a whole new way!

The animal print trend continues into Spring 2019 with unexpected colorways (like lavender, hot pink, blues, oranges and yellow) and  literal animal prints, i.e. clothing covered in pictures of all kinds of animals.

At Valentino we saw a gorgeous symmetrical design of two storks facing each other, FENDI delivered flocks of birds in spice colored hues and at  Dolce & Gabbana (a brand that never shies away from animal prints) we had the unexpected  showing of a stunning white gown emblazoned with farm animal prints, yes actual farm animals- everything from roosters to horses and cute little piggies. At Burberry we even saw some Dalmatian print!

When rockin’ animal prints this season make sure to look for fun imaginative color takes on the classic prints.  Think purple zebra, blue leopard, orange snakeskin etc.  When in doubt channel your inner child.  Think “If my 4 year old was to color in this print with crayons what hue would they use”.  Let your imagination take the lead and don’t shy away from playing with mixing prints!
