Buffalo checks, plaids, and even the typically “summer” print of gingham have become the must have print for Fall/Winter 2017.
Designers incorporated the prints in just about every form on the runways from tailored suiting to oversized slouchy blazers, wide leg trousers, dresses, booties and bags but the magic truly happened when the prints were combined.
At TOD’s there was an oh so British blend of plaid topcoats layered upon buffalo check sweater dresses, at Burberry there were cozy oversized buffalo check coats with contrasting tone on tone gingham arms and at Tory Burch flouncy school girl plaid skirts paired with abstract plaid oversized sweaters created a must-have Fall look.
How do you take this Fall/Winter must-have print trend from runway to reality?
Masterfully mixing prints is intimidating enough, let alone mixing the same print but I have a couple of tricks for making print mash-ups a no-brainer.
- Mix the scale and size of the patterns. The same print in different sizes will pair well together, regardless of color scheme.
- Have at Least One Color in Common. Basically if you have two prints that share one color that will bring the look together.
It’s seriously that easy.
Right now I’m Obsessed with Buffalo Checks. To me there is something so perfect about them. This quintessential lumber jack print has a rugged, downtown vibe for a cool, new take on the now classic plaid shirt. So here’s a little demonstration of print mixing with two Buffalo checks.
Whether you wear the trend alone or mixed into a fun pattern play of combinations you can’t go wrong with checks this season.
Stylist’s Tip: I love pairing necklaces with collared shirts but sometimes I have to fuss with the length of the necklace using a twist tie to get it just right. I finally discovered the PERFECT adjustable necklace! Kendra Scott uses adjustable sliding bead closures on their necklaces which means you can slide the bead to create whatever length you want!
What I’m Wearing: Kendra Scott Statement Necklace | Kendra Scott Color Bar Ring (I designed in store- more about this on the next post)| Ted Baker Knit Skirt (Similar found here)| Modcloth Buffalo Check Jacket (Similar found here) | Woolrich Flannel Shirt | Assets by Spanx Shaping Sheers | Melrose and Market suede boots | Grande Flat White with Almond Milk from Starbucks (LOL) |
