Enchanted Beauty: Behind the Scenes

Once Upon a Time there was a Fall Fashion Photoshoot……..

I couldn’t resist blogging about and taking you behind the scenes of the Fall Fashion layout I styled for Desert Companion Magazine.

Fall fashion 2015 is all about fantasy filled dark romance.

Dark Romanticism embodies drama and opens the door for a fashion story straight out of a fairytale.

Picture long Victorian inspired evening gowns with high necklines and lace bodices, ruffle blouses cinched into floor sweeping skirts, drapery-esc textures such as brocadeas well as fur and embroidery detailing.

When styling, there is a fine line between something being editorially relevant vs. becoming a costume so I had to be careful not to over indulge in accessories.  The goal is to use just a few statement making pieces to carry the theme and keep the images interesting.

My “crowning” glory became three stunning custom crowns that Molly Gaddy of Artifact LV created for our shoot.

The third crown (pictured above) was created from a salvaged vintage fireplace screen.  So beautiful.

Once on set our beautiful model Jessy had a smaller head than I had estimated and the crown began slipping.  Hat sizing wouldn’t hold on the crown so I had to figure out a way on the fly to keep it in place.

That solution became…..panty liners.

Yes you heard me, panty liners.

Wrap a few around the back of the crown and voila…perfect size.  I have blogged before about how useful panty liners can be on set  click here to learn why I love them!

Shooting in the gorgeous outdoor setting of Mnt. Charleston created a few obstacles, the biggest being that every time Jessy tried to stand in her heels they would sink into the soft ground.

To nab the gorgeous shot above we needed to hike up a hill quite far so photographer Robert John Kley became our knight in shining armor and carried Jessy up the hill.  Chivalry isn’t dead!

Another key to the styling success of this shoot (aside from the amazing photography of Robert John Kley and our gorgeous model Jessy) was the restraint Krystle Randall- our makeup and hair artist- showed.

It’s very easy to go overboard with a theme like this and overdo the makeup or create hair styles that are too over the top. Krystle chose to stay editorial with the look by keeping the skin fresh and clean a la Snow White with rosy cheeks a pop of color on the lip and controlled messy hair.

Fur is a key trend for Fall Winter 2015, so I wanted to incorporate it in the shoot but it needed to make sense with our story.

I chose to use it as an accent instead of a focal piece and I am very happy with the result.
