How to Wear Head-to-Toe Animal Prints

A good animal print always makes a statement but head-to-toe animal prints is next level styling!

When it comes to trends, animal print is one that just won’t quit, popping its head back up into relevancy every few years it has recently been dubbed “the new neutral.” Khaki trench coats and little black dresses are being tossed aside for leopard spots, zebra stripes, and snakeskin, which have flooded our Instagram feeds.

For decades, the furry leopard print coat has been considered the epitome of chic, from the swing-cut style Jackie Kennedy made waves with in 1962 to the many versions Kate Moss has been photographed in over the years but now designers and street-stylers alike are taking this classic print and rocking it head-to-toe.

It may seem intimidating at first but I promise you can totally pull it off with a few styling tips.  For this post, I’m strictly focusing on leopard prints but these rules can be applied to any animal print.

  1. Find a Common Thread.  The key to styling animal prints head-to-toe is the same as mixing prints: Look for one element they share.  Find one thing that carries through. It can be the type of pattern (leopard for example) or a common color (they both have black accents).
  2. Vary the Size.  Scale is the one thing they don’t have to share. You can put a big print with a small one. Just remember that the larger print will be the focal point, so wear it on the body part that you want to highlight.
  3. Keep it Simple. Stick to tailored lines and clean cuts when working your head to toe printed look this season. Things like blazers, tailored trousers, classic cut dresses, and pencil skirts all create great silhouettes for a head-to-toe print look. Simple cuts will balance out any extremely busy prints and keep everything looking modern and polished.
  4. Vary the Textures.  A look is always more interesting when it has depth.  The easiest way to create depth in a look is with texture.  Mix silks with canvas, cotton, tweed, velvet, calf hair or fur.  The different textures will each have it’s own feel and tone giving the look an extra stylish edge.
  5. Feel Free to Add in a Fun Pop of Color.  Leopard (and other animal) prints come in a wide range of hues this season, from moody blues to poppy pink.  Don’t be afraid to mix in a little burst of color.
