Seasonal Fashion Depression, Even Stylist’s Get the Blues

Seasonal Fashion Depression

After what seemed like the longest January in history, with the WORST cold season ever, we have now reached that weird time of year where one minute you need a coat and the next it feels like full-on Spring.  It’s enough to give you the Fashion Blues.

I call it that dreaded “in-between” fashion season which often brings with it Seasonal Fashion Depression creating anxiety filled “I have nothing to wear” moments.  You know what I’m talking about, we have all felt it and typically resort to a dark, comfy, lackluster, less-than-stylish, uninspired “uniform”consisting of an oversized sweater and leggings.

This is when I like to cozy up to some fashion comfort food and embrace my favorite feel-good pieces while waiting for Spring Fashion to land.  There are certain silhouettes and certain styles that go beyond the season, they exist in a timeless fashion bubble that remains chic year after year and are the perfect boost you need for fashion limbo season.

I have FIVE such go-to pieces that are sure to perk up your wardrobe and pull you out of that Seasonal Fashion Depression:

  1. Denim Jackets. Classic, timeless and totally seasonless they are one of those staple items that will NEVER go out of style. One of the reasons denim jackets are so awesome is because you can wear them with literally anything. They lend a casual easy vibe to a look, work like a boss as a lightweight layering piece without covering up the rest of your outfit and are my go-to when a look feels a bit too stuffy and needs a little edge. Sometimes we need just one piece to change up our look and pull together a whole new outfit from our tried and true pieces. A denim jacket is one of those classic pieces you may already own from previous seasons, or just the piece you need to add for fresh styling ideas.
  2. Midi Dresses- midi dresses always make me feel chic.  They are an effortless put-together all in one way to boost your style plus they hide any extra pounds you may have put on during the holiday months.
  3. Comfy yet Fashion Forward Boots– With all the walking and long hours on my feet I’ve had at work this winter my feet have been crying out for a little love so I have turned to comfort footwear.  I know some of you are rolling your eyes but comfort footwear has come a long way.  BORN makes some incredibly chic boots that feel like you are walking on a cloud from heaven.  They have saved my feet on long days!
  4. Chic Scarves. I love a good scarf. It adds a certain effortless glamour to any outfit and there are a million different ways to style one: modern one loops, a bow, turtleneck, infinity loop, waterfall, braid look, European loop, twist, fabulous fashion knot, etc.
  5. Statement Bags. Nothing perks up a look faster than a great bag.

Closet Staples You Need for 2020

Closet Staples You Need for 2020

What warrants a “closet staple”? To me it’s a piece of clothing that “does work”.

It’s a heavy hitter that you can wear in multiple ways through multiple seasons. Something that makes day-to-day dressing infinitely easier.

Closet staples serve as basic, fundamental pieces to complement the more trendier, seasonal items you may pick up. They’re classic, transitional, and special enough to hold onto all year long.

This skirt and these booties are two of my “most worn” pieces in my closet.  I have done NUMEROUS OOTD posts in them and paired them a gazillion different ways in pretty much every season.

It’s always good to take a little inventory of what pieces have been “doing work” for you and which aren’t and to make sure your go-to pieces are in good shape with no stains or tears.

To help you work on your closet staples for 2020, today I’m sharing my ultimate list of wardrobe essentials.  Having these pieces ready-to-go will save you from so many fashion emergencies!

Twelve Closet Staples You Need for 2020.

  1. A great fitting pair of non-distressed jeans.  Straight leg is always timeless.
  2. Little Black Dress (Your go-to for any impromptu event.  It will always come through for you in a pinch)
  3. Perfectly fitted skirt (it can be a pencil, A-line, swing or whatever suits your body type.)
  4.  An easy daytime maxi dress (brunch, shopping and more. A chic maxi will always have you looking polished).
  5. A pair of booties (The perfect complement to everything from dresses and oversized knits to jeans and tees. Invest in a quality pair and they’re sure to become one of the most-worn pieces in your closet.
  6. Perfect fitting tee (for me this is usually a band tee but it could also be a solid with no graphics).
  7. A printed blouse (because a tee doesn’t always work.  When you need to chic things up a go-to blouse is your bougie BFF).
  8. A white collared shirt (timelessly sophisticated).
  9. A blazer (always a model-off duty win when paired with denim).
  10. Minimal streamline sneakers (Office friendly, classic and oh so comfy, you need a pair of these stat.  Try pairing with a suit for work)!
  11. Black Pants (skinny black pants are a girl’s best friend, you know what I;m talking about).
  12. A Signature Item (This is something that is totally “you”  it could be a fragrance, handbag or amazing coat.  It’s something you rock with total confidence like a second skin)

What are your Closet Staples?  If you don’t know give your closet a little inventory check.

One easy way to check what is working for you and what isn’t is to turn around all the hangers in your closet so the hooks are pointing towards you (wrong way round). When you wear something, put it back with the hook the normal way. In six months, any hanger still facing the wrong way is holding an item you haven’t worn, it may be ready for the donation bag.

How to Wear Florals During the Winter

How to Wear Florals During the Winter

Everyone knows florals are a Spring staple but did you also know they look just as chic during the winter months?

Designers have begun to rethink how they work with the print we typically associate with warm weather. Instead of appearing on swingy summer dresses, we’re now seeing floral details on winter coats and heavy separates.

Floral prints bring a splash of color back into winter dressing which is usually a much need reprieve from the typical winter black/gray uniform.

Ok great, sounds good but HOW do you wear florals during the Winter?

To make sure your floral look is “in-season” be sure to layer up. Layering is the best way to keep warm through winter. Pair lighter fabrics with more “winter appropriate” ones to stay warm and in full bloom, without dressing out of season.

Mix it up! There are so many types of flowers and there are a gazillion different floral prints. Traditionally, winter florals feature bigger flowers and are set on darker backgrounds.  Bring the seasons together by mixing a larger floral print with a smaller one as well as mixing darker shades with lighter ones!  This will give your look depth and interest.

The best part about incorporating some floral prints into your winter repertoire is that they will also keep working straight into spring and summer.

Double Up on Denim

Double Denim

It’s the question that divides the fashion nation: Should you or shouldn’t you double up on your denim?

I say heck’s YES you should. Double denim done the right way is totally fricking cool.

For 2020 designers showcased denim on denim parings in both mens and womens shows, re-imagining the look far beyond just the expected jeans and a denim jacket into something totally fresh and new. From wide leg pleat detailed denim jeans with easy over-sized chambray tops at Stella McCartney to fully tailored denim suits layered over denim bralettes at Tom Ford it was all about America’s fabric this season.

When bringing the double denim look to reality, it takes a little practice.  There are a few easy tricks to consider when rocking this trend:

  1. The most important rule is to make sure to pair different shades of denim together. Contrasting your top and bottom pieces is essential to give your look depth and style.  The pieces should be at least two shades apart in hues.
  2. Use the two shades to your advantage.  As a general rule, lighter shades of denim draw attention to the body parts they cover, while darker washes create a slimming effect.  Place them according to what you want to accentuate and what you want to minimize.
  3. Pair denim of different weights and washes. Chambray with a heavier denim, Acid wash with a vintage wash, etc.
  4.  Keep the denim on your body, and avoid denim accessories at all costs. Double denim is a trend that should be limited to key pieces, such as jeans, shirts, dresses, skirts, shorts and jackets.

The best thing about experimenting with the double denim trend is that anyone can try it. We all have a pair of jeans in our wardrobe, and most of us have either a denim jacket, denim shirt (or both) hanging inside as well.

That means it won’t cost you anything to experiment by putting these pieces together and seeing if it’s a new season trend that will work for you.
