The Perfect Fall Fabric Corduroy

The Perfect Fall Fabric Corduroy

If you look past all the animal prints and western vibes you’ll notice another trend that is unavoidable this season: corduroy.

Corduroy was all over the Fall 2018 runways in a variety of shades from rich autumn burgundies, meerkat and ceylon yellow to martini olive and luxe ulta violet. Prada showed their autumn/winter 2018 men’s collection wearing brown cords with chunky patterned knits, Isabel Marant presented models in the most glorious green straight legged trousers  and street stylers everywhere have adopted stiff cords as the new denim.

This close cousin of velvet really is THE PERFECT Fall fabric and is a must-have in both mens and womens trends this season. (Corduroy is basically a ridged form of velvet. Both materials are derived from fustian fabric, a heavy cloth woven from cotton- in fact corduroy is also known as ribbed velvet).

With designers delivering so many ways to incorporate the fabric into your wardrobe, whether you rock it in the form of trousers, suiting, matching sets, an a-line skirt or outerwear, there is no excuse to skip this trend.

Stylist Tip: Because Corduroy is so rigid and heavy it works best when you soften it’s appearance by pairing with silky soft fabrics or an oh-so-on-trend fitted turtleneck.

How to Wear Western with an Edge

How to wear western with an edge

This season designers are OBSESSED with the Wild Wild West Western aesthetic.

It’s EVERYWHERE!  Fringe, studs and revamped cowboy boots practically ruled the Fall 2018 runways.  For weeks and weeks…. and weeks I’ve been talking about how BIG the Western trend really is and some of the feedback I’ve been getting is mixed.  It’s either “I Love it, Yee-haw” or “I could never pull that off”.

This post is for the nay-sayers, the trend-a-phobic and the “what do I do with that”ers.

The biggest concept you need to embrace for this and really any season is that Trends are Fluid. I can’t express this enough.  Trends are meant to be combined and mixed.  You don’t have to go head to toe with just one trend.

You can take elements from the Western trend and incorporate it into your own personal style without going full Rhinestone Cowgirl.  You can do western with an edge or western with a side of office. The options are endless when you open your thought process up to the possibilities.

Unexpected combinations make for the most interesting looks!  Just when you thought you couldn’t wear a fitted “office appropriate” pencil skirt with cowboy boots, think again. Mixing up Western elements with other trends gives your look that stylized feel.

Just because it’s Western, doesn’t mean that you have to strictly adhere to cowgirl elements. A Western belt paired with a pleated maxi oozes Southwestern Boho style already but adding in brightly colored boots and a multi-tone top to the look screams modern and versatile.

One of the main staples of the Western trend is a pair of cowboy boots. This season designers have taken a gazillion modern approaches to this classic Americana footwear. From glitter boots to mixed textiles, knee-high to ankle there is a cowboy boot out there this season for everyone!

Create something county fair sweet with a flouncy dress and knee high cowboy boots or something a little more edgy with sparkly boots, a western bag and a moto-jacket.

It’s up to YOU!

Fall Trend Grandpa Sweaters

Grandpa Sweater Trend Fall 2018

First it was mom jeans then dad hats and now the Grandpa Sweater is the hot ticket for Fall 2018.

Don’t let the name confuse you though,  this Mr. Rogers-esc seasonal knitty fashion favorite isn’t just for Gramps or the back of your office chair. Think uber chic runway-ready oversized cardigan with a vintage vibe.

Shown on the runways from Gucci to Missoni, this trend is not only comfy but also creates an effortlessly layered look. Throw this piece on over everything from a graphic tee to a cocktail dress. Yes a cocktail dress!  Use it as a layering piece under a statement coat or as a focal point of your look as a topper.  It’s a no-fail way to stay warm and trendy this season.

The best thing about this versatile trend is that any girl with any style can wear it, from boho chic to edgy rocker and even frilly and feminine. It’s a trend for everyone to try.

Look for cardigans with personality.  Vintage pieces with interesting patterns like patchwork, graphics and checkerboard in warm colors such as auburn, tawny brown or rustic orange and fashion forward details like bold buttons and bling.

Fall Trends: It’s a Wild Western Plaid Plaid World

Western and Plaid Fashion Trends

Get ready to hear two words from me over and over and over again this season, western and plaid.

These two predominant trends have crept their way into just about every other trend of Fall 2018 and are completely taking over.

The metallic trend has western inspired boots, the suiting trend is an explosion of plaid, the animal print trend has western whip stitching, the 90s grunge trend of course has plaid, and the floral trend has western silhouettes.  everything is coming up western and plaid this season… pl-estern? Pla-stern?

Well whatever you choose to call it plaid + western = fashion success this season.

The western and plaid fashion trends give you all the ingredients you need for an easy fall pairing with a boho sensibility. Try a yoke detailed plaid print blouse with a pair of boyfriend jeans, a pretty plaid prairie dress with a pair of metal tipped cowboy boots or a long tiered floral prairie skirt with a plaid ruffled top.  Denim is always a good choice to pair with this trend, make sure it has some good sun-faded texture, and you can never go wrong with a saddle bag by your side.   Experiment with mixing different sized western plaids that are in the same color range to create straight off the runway perfection.

Designer Spotlight- I want to start introducing you all to some new brands that I love but that you may not be familiar with starting with one of my favorites: DOEN. DOEN is a collective of creative Los Angeles based women who make elevated yet wearable pieces for the everyday. The line is inspired by vintage designs they offer flattering, easy silhouettes in luxe fabrics and approachable prices.  It is an amazing company who not only offers the chicest boho babe clothing around but also has a strong commitment to supporting women. At their launch EVERY single factory partnership they have is either women owned or co-owned.  To extent their commitment to closing the gender gap to the communities where their clothing is produced they partnered with ROOM TO READ.  each season they design a children’s style and donate 100% of those profits to benefit ROOM TO READ who’s mission is to promote literacy and gender equality.  ROOM TO READ works with communities and local governments across Asia and Africa to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children and supports girls to complete secondary school with the life skills they’ll need to succeed in school and beyond.

How to Wear Multiple Trends at the Same Time

How to Wear Multiple Trends at the Same Time

Trends are fluid.

That is one big fashion lesson I try to teach my clients.

With every season comes new trends and it’s no secret how excited I’ve been for this fall. I’ve posted about my favorite trends countless times in the last few weeks- even braving 115 degree heat wearing layers to get those photos… lol.

This season there are so many trends to fall in love with that it’s hard to settle on just one and you don’t have to!  You CAN wear multiple trends at the SAME TIME.  You have probably already been doing it and didn’t even realize!

Because of the fluidity of trends combining them can create a look that is not only visually interesting but also unique and packed with your own personal style!

Don’t know where to begin? Pairing trends is easy once you get the hang of it.  To get your started, I put together a few of my guidelines and tips that will have you rockin’ multiple fall trends together at once like a fashion pro.

  1. Pick a Statement Piece to be the focal point of your look. Having one statement piece like this allows you to strategically work the remainder of your outfit around one theme. Whether you’re highlighting a fun print or a unique cut, this will serve as the anchor to your look.
  2. Combine high with low new with old. Keeping up with trends doesn’t always have to be expensive. I’m a huge fan of mixing old pieces with new and fast-fashion, vintage and thrifted pieces with luxe brands.
  3. Make a Color Story. Use one color to carry through and tie it all together.  Choosing a complementary color palette will help keep your trending looking streamlined.
  4. Know What Works For You. Confidence is key. If you like it, wear it and rock it! People respond to and are drawn to confidence!  So, if you’re feeling it, everyone else will too!

Fall 2018 is packed with fun trends so I put together a look featuring four of my favorites: Western Inspired, Plaid, 90s grunge and Florals.

This gorgeous floral dress from Smak Parlour is my Statement Piece.  I paired it with a Western Inspired denim jacket, suede bag and bandana then layered in 90’s grunge-esc combat boots and a plaid shirt which hits both the 90’s grunge and the plaid trend.  The plaid shirt ties in the red from the floral print to help bring the look together.

Four trends, one cohesive look!  Give it a try!

What trends will you be combining this Fall?

Stylist’s Tip: It’s time to dust off those Dr. Martens you wore in college- combat boots are back as one of Fall’s hottest shoe trends!
