Color Crush Fiesta Red

Fiesta Red

There is just something oh-so-summery and perfectly spicy about Fiesta Red.  It’s a true, summery red with warmer orange undertones and a lot of fire.

Fiesta Red makes me feel muy caliente.

Cue that oh so annoying yet catchy and appropriate song…..Havana-na-na-na……

Pretty much every season we get a version of red in the “it” color palette.  We have had Berry Red, Jester Red, Tigerlily, Valiant Poppy and this season has delivered us Fiesta Red.

Designers incorporated the picante shade in just about every way imaginable.  At Gucci there were pops of fiery shade throughout the collection in everything from an oversized sleeve kimono inspired jacket to leather zip up undies and classic trench coats layered with peppery hued tights. Valentino showcased the hue in Little Red Riding hood-esc cape dresses and at Elie Saab an awe-inspiring one shoulder sleek, classic, goddess gown brought the perfect amount of heat to the runway.

The reason I have a serious color crush on this orangey red shade is that it looks great on EVERYONE and there are roughly a gazillion different ways to wear it.

You can go head-to-toe with this hot shade or try some easy pairings to pepper in the shade: Fiesta Red and Teal Blue delivers a cool southwest vibe, when paired with Cactus Green it hits on those so-on-trend western notes, Fiesta Red + Pink brings a sunset inspired palette or with Cobalt Blue for some tropical vibes. You can even incorporate it as an accent shade to pop in some color to a monochrome look with a bag or shoe.

How to Feel Tropical Even When It’s Not

Tropical Print Trend

The warmer the weather gets the more my mind keeps drifting away to thoughts of sunsets over the water, pina coladas, sandy beaches and all things tropical but an islandy getaway isn’t in the cards for me anytime soon.

I live in the desert. It’s hot, there are catci and not a beach to be found BUT that’s no reason I can’t be in a tropical state of mind, or style right?!

If there is ONE must-try print for summer 2018 it’s got to be tropical.

Super versatile and oh so summery the tropical print trend come in a variety of forms from sunset landscapes to quirky parrots, luxe palm leaves, exotic fruits and tropical flowers.  There is a little something for everyone.

Get creative and go head to toe with it channeling the sun-drenched style of a 1960s Palm Springs socialite. Go full on “Magnum P.I.” with a vibrant Hawaiian print shirt or a bit more subtle with a red carpet worthy chic palm leaf print gown.  Dress it up or dress it down wear it for day or night but whichever way you choose to rock it set your dial to tropical and then take it up a notch or two or three.

Not sure how to ride the wave?  I put together my list of 5 things you need to keep you on-trend and get you in a tropical state of mind this summer no matter where you are.

  • A bold tropical print- tropical prints are not only a HUGE trend this season but a necessity to achieve a tropical vibe.  Choose bold vibrant flora and fauna prints with a tropical nod and make sure there are pops of color that include at least one of this seasons hot colors: lavender, orange or yellow.
  • A bamboo handle bag.  Last summer it was all about those Cult Gaia wooden bags you know them they were EVERYWHERE on INSTAGRAM.  This season the trend has evolved into something a little more luxe, the bamboo handle bag.  Whether it’s a leather bag, straw, canvas or even acrylic make sure it has a bamboo handle.
  • Slides- one of the most controversial yet wearable and comfy trends around these shoes are hotter than hot this season.  They are no longer limited to rubbery, sporty soles or Burkenstock-esc orthopedic styles now slides are seriously high-fashion and adorned with everything from feathers to florals and metal details.
  • NARS Body Glow- to me it just isn’t summer without slathering myself in this decadent skin transforming body oil from NARS.   This is the product that just about EVERY beauty brand has tried (and failed) to copy.  It is a lightweight blend of hydrating essences with Tiate flower steeped in native coconut oil which gives skin a bronzed, radiant glow and smells incredible. Apply Body Glow immediately after showering for maximum hydrating benefits. Allow a few minutes for the product to absorb into the skin before getting dressed.
  • CREED Virgin Island Water an instant tropical boost this uplifting scent radiates Jamaican lime and coconut perfect for a dose of tropical paradise.

Tropical Tunes: If reggae music is your summertime jam be sure to check out the new album Punk Rocksteady from the Mad Caddies which drops on June 15th. The album features 12 classic punk songs (standards from the likes of Green Day, Bad ReligionThe Misfits, and Descendents), hand-picked by Fat Mike from NOFX, completely reimagined with a reggae strut!

How to Wear Stripes Like a Boss

Stripes Trend Spring 2018

So you may have heard, Stripes are hot for Spring 2018.

Designers painted the runways with big, bold stripes from vertical to horizontal, broad banned and pencil thin, vibrant, bold and colorful in everything from dual tones to the full rainbow stripes are EVERYWHERE this season.

The word “stripes” somehow instantly strikes fear into the hearts of every gal.  We were taught from an early age that stripes make you look bigger- and no one wants that so most people avoid them all together.

I’m here to tell you to throw out those outdated fashion rules.  It’s ok to wear stripes- they just have to be the RIGHT type of stripes.  I know it’s scary but I’m here to help.

There are a few tricks you can use to wear stripes and rock them like a boss, here is how.

The key with stripes (as with any other trend) is to choose a silhouette that flatters your frame and brings focus to your physical pluses rather than drawing attention to the parts of your body that you would rather camouflage. So you don’t have the most “runway” type frame, well neither do I but you can still wear stripes! I rock my stripes in a silhouette with a fitted waist and full skirt, a tried and true silhouette for me.

If you wear stripes vertically they can be slimming and even appear to add a few inches to your height. Horizontal stripes strategically placed at your bust and hips can create an optical illusion of a smaller waist. Wider stripes tend to add a bit of width so they are perfect for creating the illusion of a larger bust or to create the illusion of curves on boyish figures.

Stripes of varying sizes can help create curves where you may not have them while still flattering your natural figure and smaller stripes can create a narrowing illusion.

Try mixing and matching your stripes (yes, you can wear stripes of different sizes and colors in the same outfit!), go head to toe or just use them as an accent.  The fun of fashion is experimenting!

Still hearing your mother’s warnings echoing in your ears?  Stripes still too scary?  Try adding stripes in baby steps.  Start by adding them with accessories like shoes and handbags! With a little practice you’ll be painting the town striped in no time!
